What Do You Expect from Google Chrome OS?

I've asked some time ago the readers of this blog what they expect from Google Chrome OS, an open-source operating system built around Google Chrome, that will be released later this year. Here are some of their answers:

Integration with Google Accounts

"I believe Google accounts will be used to login to Chrome OS. Kinda whereever you go, you can use your Google account username/password to login. I hope it will use local disk to store frequently accessed file and sync it to Docs like Dropbox."

It should work offline

"There would have to be some kind of offline credential caching so you can log on even when you are not connected to the network."

Instant boot

"The thing I need with Google Chrome OS is instant bootup. I want something where I open up my laptop and the screen turns on and puts a web browser in my face."

It should be fast

"I just want to get rid of infinite waiting for load up. When I turn on my computer, half the times is just to open a web browser, a media player and an instant messaging program. I don't want to have to wait AGES for all sorts of background programs and services to load up."

Built-in desktop search

"I like the desktop search element of Google Desktop: it's a good way to access my files, e-mails and web history quickly. That should be included in Chrome OS. And there should be an offline cache of everything, so that I can still see read web pages I've visited even when offline."

In sync

"Syncing is important these days. Not just bookmarks, but passwords, and "user states" so you can pick up on another machine almost where you leave off on one. I would be able to start working on a document on my desktop machine and then switch to my laptop and hit the road, confident that when i open the document authoring app I'll be right where I left off."

Invisible

"Google ChromeOS should save screen real estate. On smaller devices like netbooks, you need to conserve as much screen real estate as possible."

Use applications without installing them

"Even if storage memory is cheaper now than ever, mobile phones, netbooks, etc. will benefit of avoiding to install software specific for each use on the physical memory and maintaining it "in the cloud". Sites should have the capability (and maybe a standard protocol) to communicate each other with the browser as a medium (avoiding the download and following upload of the object), user should have the capability to chose the service that he wants to subscribe to (eventually choosing it from an online appstore-like site), the OS should be able to recommend new and interesting service to subscribe to the user based on information collected (with his permission) about his behaviour."

Run Windows applications

"I want to run Windows programs, as well as games. I want Chrome OS to be able to do everything a normal computer can do! That way I can get ditch Windows and get Chrome OS for (hopefully) free!"

Don't forget the hardware!

"Driver support for a wide range of mobile hardware -> platform hardware combination. I'm particularly interested in WiMax support on an ARM processor."

So people want a fast operating system that loads instantly, doesn't use too many resources, saves your data online so you can continue your work from another computer and it keeps the data in sync, works offline, uses applications without installing them, runs Windows applications and it's compatible with many combinations of hardware.

What do you expect from Google Chrome OS?

89 comments:

  1. Black screen during page poading, not white.
And optional dark screen for text reading/edition, to switch from white screen.

Why? Not only to save unnecessary excessive energy consumption, and better comfort for the eyes.
This is very important when working on a device powered by batteries.
Of course, most notably this is welcome for mobile devices using Android than Google OS, nevertheless it seems detail I believe this is very important and missing.

  2. Fast, clean, good-looking, in-builded AV and with an opportunity to play Windows games - thats everything I'd need to change my WinXp to Google OS :)

  3. anonymous: fyi, the way computer screens work, it doesn't use any less energy when the're dark
    :-)

  4. Secure.

It should encrypt the hard drive, or at least the personal files so nobody can access them, or my Google account, if the netbook/mobile phone/laptop is stolen or lost. Also the internet link should be secure, so I can use it securely from a public computer.

And please, a decent encryption system, not like Office crap cryptosystem.

Also, the possibility to have several accounts open at the same time, but independent one from the other, like the multiuser interface of windows, where you can block the current session and open a new one for another user.

For applications, it would be nice to run it without installation, from a flash drive, like the "Portable apps" project.

Another request: make it flash-drive bootable, so I can use it in a public computer or friend's computer without installing it.

    Regards!

  5. "Run Windows applications", sounds totally idiotic, for of course it wont run windows apps... if one has read at the very least the wiki article then one would know its linux based.

Secondly it will be released later next year, not this year!

  6. heh, what do I expect from ChromeOs? Well, simple thing, just make it please the way it works, and not producing headaches, requires patching, tuning, fiddling aroung, spellcasting, praying etc. It became annoying especially starting from 100 host and up. Make it invisible please: we all know that there is OS but nobody ever had a need to look at it ;-)

  7. Run Windows Apps? They could include Wine but doesn't that defeat the purpose of a Internet oriented OS?

I want Chrome OS to have the ability to put Web Data on my desktop. Make custom widgets very easy to build like with Samurize.

  8. Fast, save screen estate, fast to boot, definitely no desktop search, smart privacy tools, mac compatible, lean and mean

  9. From Google: "Later this year we will open-source its code, and netbooks running Google Chrome OS will be available for consumers in the second half of 2010." That means you'll be able to download the OS later this year.

For those who wonder if it's possible to run Windows applications, Wine is just one of the possible answers. The most likely answer is Native Client, a Google project that will be integrated in Chrome. "Native Client is an open-source research technology for running x86 native code in web applications, with the goal of maintaining the browser neutrality, OS portability, and safety that people expect from web apps."

  10. I Mainly want support for Google Desktop Gadets and iGoogle gadgets, but knowing that this is Google that's probably already on the roadmap. It'd be nice to see OpenSocial support implemented to have a social desktop.

Also one feature I'd like to see which is for Chrome as a whole and not just Chrome OS is WebSlice support. The web has no way of running apps in the background aside from extensions and this would be one step in the right direction.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Android apps: the android VM should be made compatible and included in chromeOS. Android apps could be the 'desktop gadgets' of chromeOS. it will add great value to both the netbooks and the android community

    ReplyDelete
  12. Encryption and private documents - possibly using seamless integration of truecrypt. Privacy will probably be the concern on the tip of everyones tongue. The next thing is what I expect this to be, like a Linux OS perhaps with the polish normally only seen on Mac OS, and not just another branded distro.

    ReplyDelete
  13. With support for 3rd party devices. It should be able to hook up various devices out of the box (or download and install it automatically).
I have to say that I have tried to use Linux on my netbook. Unfortunately my Canon Pixma ip4600 printer does not work at all (incl. the Canon proprietary driver) and my Sony-Ericsson K530i is seen as external storage if I connect it via cable only. Windows is able to use Bluetooth and MyPhoneExplorer is a miracle. I can sync (with Google services!), send SMSes, install J2ME software, transfer pictures and mp3s, etc.

    ReplyDelete
  14. I definitely am voting for the ability to use games. I LOVE Google, but I also run all my games on PCs and laptops. For me to make Google OS my primary OS, it would have to support games.

    ReplyDelete
  15. I would expect that a lot of things would be stored on the cloud. But, I also want the ability to store stuff locally and prevent them to be sync online. This is a necessity for files that contain confidential information. No matter how "secure" the cloud is, I won't store those confidential files out there. That said, I second @igo and @DannyStaple comments about security.

I also want to see the capability of organizing my files like what these guys offer: http://www.tabbles.net/

    ReplyDelete
  16. Simply a fast boot and my personal configuration, programs and files available in any pc with Chrome OS, with a GGG Global Google Gears solution to work offline. I mean like a dropbox solution but for the hole system, not only for a folder.

If I buy a new PC I'll only need to sync it and start working with my programs and files.

    That's my "ideal" OS...

    ReplyDelete
  17. For me for example to be :
    1. Safe
    2. Quick boot: 3-5 seconds
    3. To work Windows apps
    4. To be a combination of windows and mac os :)

    ReplyDelete
  18. I was thinking of an online-app store, too! It would be a great way to easily access and pay for (with Google Checkout, hopefully) apps that would be hard to find out about otherwise.
Personally, I don't care much at all about Windows applications, but a port of Wine would be nice, but this isn't online, so I doubt it will be there. Perhaps an online version of VM ware (or something like it) would be better. You can do pretty much everything online though, and what you can't, people will live without or dual boot.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Chrome OS should become a productivity platform. apps like docs, spreadsheets, mail, calendar etc. should be done on this. because it would sync online and keep multiple machines mirrored. so where ever you go, you always have your all your important things with you. local caching should therefore be heavily encrypted and you should never have to worry about syncing, it should automatically do this and show just a green/red button to notify you if it is in sync.

i also think that a lot of google apps will see an increase in performance. offline mode are great and hopefully will go to more applications. it would be great if google maps would cache more so it will become usefull even without an internet connection.
Youtube will probably be playing Ogg Theora movie files so it will run them smoothly and even play HD on netbooks. Also connecting a camera and uploading to youtube should become easier.

and this argument might sound stupid from an customer perspective, but google should keep a tight control over the apps that will on chrome OS natively, apps that are developed for it should run as a webapp anyway. But one thing that has kept the iphone clear of a lot of problems is keeping a close watch on the app store. i already hear people say it should run windows app, this is a road google should never walk. build your own strength in available apps and stay clear of potential people complaining about windows apps not working well.

Success of Chrome OS should be that it is so simple to use, it speaks for itself and anyone can use it. it makes sure that you never lose any of your files and you can access them anywhere you want. that Chrome OS is ultra fast in start-up times and responsiveness. running on netbooks it's really cheap. it integrates a lot of things like your address book in your phone, your photos etc.

    ReplyDelete
  20. light installation step
    rich custom preference for appearance
light running resources (Cloud Computing, web services?)

Integrated environment (All Google services and apps are basic)
    offline + online sync

    My idea:
just a feature: 3D Cloud Environment Desktop (like Desktop, but not table, is a blue sky with white cloud(apps/services))

    ReplyDelete
  21. The #1 thing Google must do to prove that Chrome OS is all we need is develop Chrome OS on Chrome OS with no installed applications except a browser. Do that and Google's theory that people don't need applications gets a nice proof point. If the developers don't use Chrome OS then isn't that like Windows developers not using Windows?

    ReplyDelete
  22. I'd like to see an innovate way for managing local files. Maybe some sort of expanded clipboard that temporarily stores text, photos, etc. and then allows the user to access them for pasting and uploading. Most of the user interaction would be with the cloud, but this is also a necessary feature.

    ReplyDelete
  23. you people who want windows apps are idiots. The whole point is that it only runs a web browser.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Hardware support, hardware support, hardware support! Not just for crappy netbooks. I want graphics chip support, etc.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Programmable. Easy to program. Like emacs or squeak.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Instant on
    SERVERS:
    Web server (Apache or whatever)
    File server (Samba or whatever)
    Media server

    Media player
    VOIP

X Windows (or similar) Server so I can use a much larger screen to view and interact with my apps

Integration into cloud so that apps can begin running on my machine, and then if I need to turn the machine off, the apps can migrate into a cloud for more processing, and later migrate back to my machine. Think webservers, think various bots.

Some mode to help me pick up girls.

  27. Why would anyone want to run Windows apps on Chrome OS? We already have something for that; it's called Windows. And anyone who's ever used Wine knows that Windows apps on non-Windows platforms are ugly and slow (and making them not ugly makes them unusably slow). Google has zero interest in running apps made for their greatest competitor in their own OS.

I'm guessing -everything- will be in the browser, no taskbar, no dock, nothing. (The taskbar is the tab bar!) Turning off the computer, doing suspend/hibernate, etc. will be done through a system button, next to the page and wrench buttons. Icons/text for Wifi networks and battery levels will replace the minimize, maximize, and close buttons. The user's desktop will be the new tab page, with "buttons" (thumbnails) to the user's favorite sites (aka web apps (email, etc)) and shortcuts to do other system things. Of course, the user will be able to change the background. The web browser will do the file managing, in fancy HTML5 with drag and drop.

If all this comes true, the web browser will essentially become the operating system, and that's what Google wants.

The only thing I don't know about is how Chrome OS will handle music listening. Even if I was connected to "the cloud" 24/7, I couldn't and wouldn't listen to Pandora and Last.fm all the time, especially because Pandora now has a monthly limit for free users. (Also, many IPs cap bandwidth usage, including mine.) Integrated DAAP support (like what Banshee has) would be great, and it would pressure Apple to either open DAAP or use the older, open, and commonly used version in iTunes.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I would like the integration of applications such as Gmail, Wave!, Calendar, Picasa and ... Facebook! Strong integration, so that all was easy to use. ChromeOS should put emphasis on communication as well as social networks.

    ReplyDelete
  29. If it doesn't have 64-bit support it's a joke.

    ReplyDelete
  30. well something it should have too that would REALLY help and I be leave many people will agree. they need to do the mac idea of make it only in one version. and some how make a happy medium between 32 and 64 bit. choose one or make there own, but only use one.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Ability to get timely and expert help directly from Google when needed. I love Google but actually getting help from Google on any number of their items like, gmail, checkout, etc. is near impossible and in fact impossible if it's needed timely. Sorry Google, but if we (Google and all of us Google supporters) want to seriously play in this space Google must step up direct support that is timely and expert when needed by users.

    ReplyDelete
  32. as it would be linux distro, chrome OS should has good packaging system like .deb
no AV, because it is linux, and it is affected by no viruses

I think that Chrome OS ought to be a as much as cloud operating system as it is posible
for example clicking on dock icon of spreadsheet should open google docs' spreadsheet whether computer is online or not, if it is out of internet, you should be able to create new document, work on it, save (it save's locally) but whenever it is connected to net, it should sync with docs
like it runs with google gears

same with hard drive, I heard about google disk, for storage
uploading pictures to picasa web album, integrated almost every google services (reader, wave, voice, talk, tasks, notebook)

wine emulation layer for those who do want to play some games,
    and full support for OpenGL
maybe ChromeOS will force game developers to write for OpenGL in order to run in macosx and linux

IF YOU GOOGLE DO THAT, IT WOULD BE A MILE STONE FOR COMPUTING AND ONE STEP TO FREE GAMES FROM WINDOWS ONLY TERMINALS

  39. Please don't add Windows emulation. ChromeOS should be free of Windows applications, viruses, rootkits etc. The system should be lightweight, fast, secure. No one runs games on netbook/notebooks!

  42. * Save the entire user context (profile/settings and documents) on a USB key or SD card. Therefore my identity and documents are independent of the computers I run onto.
    * No registry or visible install/uninstall process, it should look like any application is in the cloud and cached (available offline) as soon as I start using it once.
    * Automatic sync with the cloud is a must! for docs, mails/waves, contacts, agenda etc.
    * Instant on and as fast as Google Chrome.

  43. @igo "make it flash-drive bootable"

    That could be FANTASTIC!

If it is as small as expected, SanDisk could even offer ChromeOS pre-installed on their flash drives sold at Fry's, Best Buy, Walmart, etc.

    This would:

    1. allow people to try ChromeOS first, before installing it on their machine.

    2. allow people to travel with just a flash-drive. These drives could be used on:
    - public computers (libraries, internet cafes, etc...even in foreign countries!).
    - PCs at customer sites or branch offices (think business travelers).
    - a family or friend's computer.
    - any device that can boot from a flash drive (smartphone? netbook/notebook/desktop? tablet?).

    3. allow any ChromeOS-related files (config, cache, etc.) to be stored on the flash-drive.

    4. give old PCs new life. Out-of-date "zombie" PCs (used for spam & DDoS attacks) can suddenly be upgraded to a modern OS & browser, without installing anything on them.

    Cool!

  47. Google needs a fairly lengthy beta period with many participants. Lots of feed back and many updates before it's official release. We all saw what happened with Vista.
Quick key commands and mouse clicks are a big deal. I hate spending a lot of time trying to do something that should be simple.
Plug and play is another necessity. I sometimes lose my driver discs and when I reformat, downloading off the websites can take forever!

  50. COSTUMIZABLE FONT SIZE :

most browser just forget people with special needs , namely shortsighted people.
    I am shortsighted.
I need a browser in wich I can freely ajust the size of the fonts.
I can do it with Mozilla Firefox but I cant do it with Chrome.

    2- LOW SYSTEM RESOURCES CONSUMPTION

That aspect is also very important.
Most people have not the latest hardware.
A Browser is a tool to surf the web.., it should not be an aplication that sucks all of your computer resources.

3- BEWARE APPLICATIONS THAT RUN ONLINE.

    The idea might look sexy..,but.....
But millions of people rely on wireless connections and with wireless the more you download the more you pay.
    (Others still use dial connections)
Dont think that everyone has acess to broadband or can make unlimited downloads.

  51. I did answer to the reply : " What would I expect from chrome browser ".
Only now I got aware that I did not understood the question properly but what was written about the browser can be aplied to a OS.

1- Customizable when it comes to font size.
This feature is very very important.
There are millions of shortsighted people out there and in the future there will be even more ( Population is aging ).

2- The OS should work with not so powerfull hardware.

3- Beware aplications that run online

4- Make it simple, make it simple, make it simple.

75% of the people know nothing about computers.
They want a simple operative system.

  53. -Run all windows applications but dont let them change OS settings or start-up programs. (For security)
-Installing programs should be as easy as Mac's.
-It should encourage programmers to write new programs for Chrome Os. So there will be variety of programs for This os. With some time it will be inevitable to change OS.
-Just dont forget everybody using windows because Program-X is designed for Windows only.
-OPEN-GL and Direct-x support Direct-x is only for Windows but lots of games using Direct-x if you include Direct-x api there will be better games i hope.

NOTE TO PEDRO : I can do it with Mozilla Firefox but I cant do it with Chrome. Hold CTRL and Mouse-wheel should do that

  54. Make Application store. People could download update programs there if they want. Application store will be tested by google, so it is %90 virus free. If you cant test programs at least people could download programs from one source so it will be quicker.(Something like android app store)

  55. Every application should be "installation free", i.e. e deep separation between OS and programs, I think that allowing only portable apps is the best way.

I want more transparency on applications installed. If you want to add something to the Chrome OS at least give me a choice during install (custom install) or through settings. Maybe I want a different media player or message service, or none at all.

I was thinking some sort of VM software for windows based applications. If Chrome maintains a platform independent motto and succeeds then (it may be some time but) we will see applications migrate to platform independence over the OS managing different platform options.

It’s like one write "I want to have 1 million bucks. But I don’t want to do anything for it." Silly. Windows and Unix-based systems are comparing apples to trees. Unix will NEVER replace Windows machines. Unix users are different users and prefer something different. So the day will (hopefully) never come that Unix systems can replace Windows OS.

  63. Should be like you would expect from LXDE: Lightweight and fast and avoid code complexity. Hardware support should be excellent. High quality through extensive code review and analysis. Rock solid. Focus on the internet but possible to install linux applications and even Windows apps with Wine or virtualisation as you know it from MacOSX

    ReplyDelete
  64. Everyone wants Windows support. Don't fall for this.

If you could win by running Windows software better than Microsoft can, then we would all be running OS2 right now. Microsoft wants to produce mainframe software for the desktop. That is why Windows is bloat ware. I say let Microsoft dominate this market. If you try to copy Microsoft, they will crush you. Chrome OS does not need to compete directly against Microsoft.

Chrome OS needs to be small, fast and secure. Web applications can serve the needs for 90% of consumers and 50% of business users. With large acceptance, software companies will port there product to Chrome OS, just as they have with the Mac. Better yet, they will port their software to Java.

If Chrome is free, Linux based and Open Source, you will have 4 billion people in the developing world willing to support it.

I can see the day that 80% of PC will have Chrome OS. Specialized business machines will have Windows with Chrome compatibility (Web/Java). Rich people will have Macs with Chrome compatibility.

  65. I would drop windows for it if there is:
    -a live embed dev-mode
    -support for x86 architecture
    -2sec boot (& 2sec shut down!!)
-mobile (for example just bootable from stick without any installation)
and secure online sync of data

  66. Running Windows applications or games under Chrome does not make sense to me. These games and applications need lots of resources. I think the right way to go is to help software developers to port their applications to the new cloud model, although to play games you still need a powerful CPU and GPU.

  67. I want Chrome OS to be open source. Privacy is my major concern, specially looking at what Google did with Chrome and the fact that MY data will be stored on Google servers, I want ABSOLUTE control over what can be used for what. And Google should not deny access to services just because I don't want to allow them to use my information for something else that they do not need to provide me the service, e.g. I should not be denied to use it because I do not want to allow Google to use my information to develop new products or share it with third parities. I should be asked for each of these cases separately, or at least be allowed to opt-out, I don't want something that either you agree that they can do whatever they want or you can not use the service. I will be keep watching to see whether Google keeps to be "Do not do evil" company or turn into "Privacy Devil".

  69. i would like to see chrome os be fast, it should support all hardware( by using windows drivers just as wifi drivers r used). have a nice multimedia player tht supports the popular formats, without the hassle to download stuff like with ubuntu. and support for windows applications in case one needs to use one of those apps or games. and most importantly a secure environment to defeat the purpose of antivirus software, and reinstallation of windows repeatedly

  70. Think about how Gmail changed webmail -- I would like to see Google make that same kind of paradigm shift to the operating system. Chrome OS should include:

-- automation of tasks that should be automated
-- seamless integration with the Google online apps (with local versions that may add functionality)
-- iPod management (through either iTunes or a replacement)
-- absolute simplicity and hardware utilization
-- support for a pretty standard set of devices (especially netbook hardware)
-- allow manufacturers / individuals to create drivers for additional devices.
-- the ability to boot and run from a USB drive

  71. no OS can currently provide instant startup, the closest to this would be using SSD hard drive

  73. I want instant e-mail function built in the OS that uses minimum memory.

I have about 5 different email accounts, using pop3 I wanna be able to recieve all of them straigt to the OS without having to use a stupid email program like microsoft outlook.

I also want a gadget that is similar to something Mac Leopard have, where you can mark an area on any website and that area will keep updating continously on your desktop, i.e if I decide to mark a news feed, that small box of news feed will appear on my desktop and keep updating.

  74. The worst thing about Linux is that it can't work out of the box easily. With the rise of netbooks, where hardware is pretty standard market-wide, it'll make this much easier (enter Moblin, Jolicloud, Ubuntu NBR), but anytime we want to use ChromeOS on a desktop, game over since the hardware is so diverse.

so i expect it to be marketed similar to Mac OS X. Limited launch on specific computers (like Dell Mini 10v, ASUS 1005ha, etc) that will work out of the box.

But here are some things that I worry about:
Please don't add to the long list of Linux distros. I already have Moblin, Jolicloud, and Ubuntu NBR on my ASUS 1005HA and they do a fine job at being Linux on a netbook.
Please don't make me compile my own drivers for it to work.
Please don't make me open up the terminal daily.
Please don't be a Googlelized Linux distro with WINE and proprietary software included (a-la Linux Mint)
Please don't limit ChromeOS to just work well with your own products (such as not including MSN Messenger, but only gTalk)
Please don't be slow to update like you are for your Google Gears plugin for Firefox. I want to see ChromeOS be compatible with a computer that hasn't been released yet to the public.

    Here are some requests:
Please polish the user experience immensely (a-la Jolicloud)
Please make it social networking friendly (a-la Moblin)
    Be a step ahead.

Oh, and please don't piggyback off the free open-source hard work of others. If all you want, Google, is to have a good Windows-free alternative with your products built in, why don't you just support and invest in Ubuntu or something similar? I think I understand why you don't, but just be careful and actually set ChromeOS apart from the rest. Perhaps the Linux community could rally around ChromeOS and unify well enough to earn enough respect from hardware vendors for the desktop arena to develop GOOD drivers for them.

  75. I would want to still play my games for windows games!
And I would want to be able to use my windows media center remote for another tv tuning thing...
    An understandable file system.
    NO ADS!! :P
The ablilty to not have to get a backup browser for certain sites.
I'm basically planning on putting it on a computer that is able to run smoothly on vista. I'm not going to pay for 7.

  76. So basically... you want Google to release their own Linux distribution, plus games. That sounds do-able.

  77. MULTIPLE ACCOUNTS CAPABILITIES
in my case for example, i have 2 companies registered with google apps, and also a gmail.com account. So:
    - having two sets of virtual hard drives or My docs folder for the two companies googledocs
    - 2 email accounts on a outlook-type gmail
    - both calendars in one (ability to choose the event calendar but to see all of them or just one if i want to)
    - One unified contact and Tasks list, and sycnronization for both companies.

Maybe some of these are more work to googleapps than googleOS but still.

  78. Just a basic thinking about UI. The chrome os UI is based on chorme. Every application run will run as a separate tab. Great no problems. But idealy while working we open a lot applications at the same time. Chrome will not have any limitation on number of tabs but what about the visibility? As the number of tabs increase the visibility of tabs will decrease. Anyway they need to have some solution on this UI factor.
