After releasing Flash Player for Android, Adobe launches a PDF reader for Android. The applications is available in the Android Market and it can be installed only if your phone runs Android 2.1 or later and it has at least 256 MB of RAM and a 550 MHz processor.
Nexus One already comes with a document viewer based on Quickoffice, but the application doesn't do a great job at previewing PDF files. Adobe Reader for Android opens PDF files much faster than Quickoffice and it has a better zooming feature.
"Adobe Reader for Android offers multi-touch gestures, like pinch-and-zoom, as well as double-tap-zoom, flick-scrolling and panning. We've also added a reflow mode, which will take text-heavy documents with wide margins, and automatically wrap the content for easy viewing on smaller screens," explains Adobe.
The application doesn't include basic features like search or support for password-protected files, but it's snappy, documents are readable and the applications opens in full screen. There aren't many free PDF viewers for Android and Adobe's application is clearly the best right now.

it runs perfect on the htc hero
ReplyDeleteOn your Android device, once you open the reader, how do you find a pdf file. I do not see any function for opening docs from the menu.
ReplyDeleteI can open a doc using a file manager, download manager, email attachment and web page.
Thanks
The app is just a tool for viewing PDF files. You're suppose to use another application for browsing the file system. The built-in Quickoffice app doesn't even let you launch it directly.
ReplyDeleteThe slowness of HTC to update the Hero to 2.1 (been being pushed since last year Dec till next Jun) is really terrifying. There's nothing cool left in 1.5 camp. All new COOL stuffs are only for 2.0 and above. That makes me really think twice before getting HTC Evo. Will it ever join the fate of the Hero? Most certainly, with HTC's inability to port software at a fast pace. :s
ReplyDeleteso they cannot even support password protected files with their own application and their own technology?
ReplyDeletedisappointing.
256 MB ... pretty high requirement !
ReplyDeleteAdobe is really not used to ligthweight apps... (when I see how the acrobat reader even lags on my quad core DUO, 4GB RAM...)
But anyway it does work very well on my HTC Magic (188 MB RAM including video mem) at least with not too big pdfs (android 2.1 with cyanogen ROM)
The slowness of vendors to update to 2.x, and the high memory requirements (256 meg!!!) are some of the reasons people have issues with Android. Say what you will about Apple, but they have a pretty consistent release schedule.
ReplyDelete@ Alex Chitu; I have the same question as Robert Milk.
ReplyDeleteSoooo, what app do you use to view .pdf files?
For that matter can anyone recommend one?
Use Astro as a file manager and Adobe Reader as a PDF viewer.
ReplyDeleteNo ability to bookmark on large pdf's
ReplyDeletepfft uninstalling
Of course no link to the apk for those of us without a android store.
ReplyDeleteAdobe Reader is almost ideal. BUT absence of bookmarking or goto page stuff turns it into a trash... :(
ReplyDeleteCan adobe reader for Android read GeoPDFs?
ReplyDeleteThis does not seem to be available from Android Market any more. How can I get this?
ReplyDeleteThis does not seem to be available from Android Market any more. How can I get this? I am running a Viewsonic gTablet so this should work fine.
ReplyDeleteYour tablet probably uses an old Android version. Adobe Reader requires Android 2.1 or a more recent version.
ReplyDeleteWhy do I need adobe reader on android?
ReplyDeleteTo open PDF files on your phone.
ReplyDeleteI'm running Galaxy Spica, and this newest version can run well in my device. But, one problem about panning & scrolling in the flow text mode, it like disabled. FYI, currently my device not support multitouch.
ReplyDeleteCould someone tell me how do I delete a PDF document I don't want anymore from Adobe Reader App? I am using on a HTC EVO 4G.
ReplyDeleteThank you.
The app only shows the files that are on your SD card. Use a file manager like Astro (available for free in the Android Market) to find the file and delete it.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Alex. I already installed Astro. And I just delete those pdf files from my card. Thank you again for your prompt reply.
ReplyDeleteI am trying to put a pdf file on my phone so that I can view it on the phone. I have the Adobe Viewer (from the Android market) and also have Astro (from the Android market). I downloaded Verizon's VCast Media Manager and put the file on the phone, but Astro and Adobe can not find the file on the phone. What am I doing wrong?????
ReplyDeleteIs "text to speech" a function in Adobe PDF reader for Android? If not, any other ways or APPs to perform "text to speech" on an Android phone?
ReplyDeleteI just took the microsd card out, put it in a Targus adapter from radio Shack, and deleted the files. No commercials involved.
ReplyDeleteI downloaded astro so I could delete PDF files on adobe reader. But I still can't figure how to do it!!! I have a Droid can anyone help me?
ReplyDeleteAnonymous -- This is what I do on my HTC EVO 4G: Open the Astro's File Manager, then scroll down to the "Download" folder, you should see your pdf files there. Click and hold down on the file you want to delete, and you'll see all the options there.
ReplyDeleteI hope this works for you as well.
How do you use text to speech???!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteI echo the need for text to speech!!!
