Google Tests Card-Style Search Interface for Desktop
Google experiments with a desktop search UI that looks more like the mobile interface. The experiment uses the same white cards on a gray background for both search results and ads.

ReplyDelete1) You have >50% of the page with nothing but white space on standard 1080p monitors. Your design team should have a serious discussion about that. And no, they are not "responsive" type layout items. While the standard page also shares this issue, the fact that each element blends into the rest of the page makes that empty space be part of the answer rather than truly wasted space.
2) The test is missing standard links like "Send Feedback"
3) The loss of ~20% of the search results that normally fit on a screen is far too much. The excess scrolling is quite an issue when you have a hundred results per page.
Just got that today on my search.... I simply hate it ! If anyone know how to revert, would love to know.

I do not like it, having to research every day, at least one would expect the Chrome team to give us the option to use this layout instead of enforcing it onto people . . .
ReplyDeleteFor some reason I am getting this on my account. I absolutely do not like the new style. Makes me feel like I am getting limited search results each time. How can I restore this? I spent a lot of time thinking I am getting mobile results and wasted a lot of time trying to disable it. Please get rid of this.

DeleteAlso dislike this "innovation." More designy-ness for its own sake. Less functionality and reduced ability to compare search returns for their relative value. And way less respect for economizing on the desktop. Maybe enough to drive me to another search engine, if Google can't revert to a more sensible display.
ReplyDeletePS Someone somewhere else said we are involuntary beta testers, that the only way out of this miasma is to wait for Google to end the experiment. Of course that's not the only way out. Switching to another search engine is another. But why make that necessary, Google?
ReplyDeleteIt's difficult to understand how this can be A/B testing when there's no feedback mechanism and no way to revert. This is a terrible, terrible UI design that ruins what had previously been a great UX. Even on my huge monitor, only 8 results appear - so I have to scroll. Why? I have a shrewd suspicion that this is designed to reduce the difference between paid search results and honest search results. If anyone from Google's design team reads this blog, please go back to the awesome UI/UX you had before. You might recall the Windows Metro fiasco as Microsoft went to 'cards'. It didn't work for them; it won't work for you!
ReplyDeleteMy chrome just got the disease yesterday. I have been using Google search as my homepage since 2002 and I have liked that it stays the same and not overly cluttered. The boxy feel is terrible and makes me feel like I am on a table or phone while on my desktop. Might be time to find a new search engine.
ReplyDeleteThis may be the largest encouragement for me to switch to using Bing. I tried killing my cookies, which resolves it, but logging back into my account reverted it back.
ReplyDeleteI also noticed the results themselves changed - which is a more serious concern. It appears there is more prioritization of paid content, as I have been finding the relevancy of search results diminishing since this change.
No sir, I don't like it. Too much white space, not enough search results. Harder to read each entry with so much space between - jarring to the eye to switch from text to white space so many times.
ReplyDeleteSeconded, thirded and fourthed! This 'experimental' format is awful on a desktop. I've been using duckduckgo, which I don't love but it's better than this google search atrocity.

Also hate this "experiment" -- both the user-hostile design and the user-hostile arrogance of Google not giving us a choice. Bing now my default search engine. I'll switch back when Google fires the fools behind this monstrosity.

Just last week I was being struck with this new experimental design. Without being notified, no way of switching it on or off. Since I'm powerusing a regular PC without touch, my search result pages are big white windows with some actual content here and there.
ReplyDeleteGeez Google Inc... First you took away Android-Chrome's app/tab-merge, then forced Ampproject for the news app, now this. Well, guess you have to be the guineapig if you get Google services for free. Sigh
Some years ago, McDonalds made a major change in the way they pre-pared their food. Before the change you could walk in, order a cheeseburger, the cashier would turn around and retrieve one out of a "Hot box," place it in a bag and complete the transaction by handing it to you for your Epicurean Delight. Then, someone in upper management got an idea: "Food-On-Demand" is what I think they called it. With the new system, you would walk in, order a cheeseburger, the cashier would enter your request into the computer, that entry would show-up on a screen to the "Cook" in the back who would then prepare your cheeseburger. I'm sure this worked Great on paper and/or "McDonald's University" but it didn't exactly translate to the real world. Now, that same burger would take 4 minutes (or more if you were second in line) to make its way to you. I won't bore you with the ensuing test-runs of the system but for a short version: It didn't work. Still, they decided to keep the new system- 1). The tests weren't succeeding because the "cooks" were slow; they weren't used to the system yet and/or they were trying to sabotage it for they didn't want/like it. 2). It was such a good Idea!!! Why was it such a good idea? Because it came from an upper level manager!
ReplyDeleteI can't help but wonder if this same type of managerial Dis-function isn't at play here! As I pointed out in an earlier post, people have been complaining about these boxes for almost a year but they're still here! The Googles are still "Testing" the boxes and people are annoyed enough to come here to complain, yet, those complaints seem to be falling on deaf ears. Since "They" are holding on to the Boxes idea for so hard and so long, they must have decided to keep them. Why? 1). Because not everybody is complaining! 2). It's the idea of an upper-level manager and 3). It's such a good Idea!!!
...Of course, there could also be nefarious reasons we haven't considered/figured out yet, but I'm not too eager to wear the tin-foil hat quite yet. ...though I do have it in easy access!

I'm not dissatisfied with "duckduckgo.com" though truthfully, I never heard of them until yesterday. Still, it is my new FireFox Homepage. If I get in a bind, I'll link over to google to see if I can get a better search result. ...haven't needed to do that yet, though.

ReplyDeleteplease get rid of the boxes. they are awful and make reading down lists impossible. I have tried for several days but it is not working for me. I am switching search engine providers. Goodbye google, it has been fun!
ReplyDeleteI noticed the change a couple of days ago, and I've been trying to get rid of it immediately. It's ugly, uses up too much space and I don't like the additional promotion of certain contents. I hate it!

ReplyDeleteWhen using the Search Preview option, this messes up the results, so it's often impossible to reed the returned search matches. And generally very bad UI experience.
