If you don't want to disable Flash content, but just to make a disturbing Flash ad shut up, you can install FlashMute, a small program that supports IE, Firefox, Opera.When executed, FlashMute will put a new icon in your system tray. When clicking this icon, it will alternate between its normal state: "F", and the muted state: "F" with a red X across it. When in the normal state, Flash movies will be allowed to use sound output, but when the red X is displayed, Flash will be denied access to your audio hardware.
You can also use a shortcut instead of clicking the icon: Ctrl-Alt-M.

ReplyDeleteThis program gets falsely pinged as adware because it uses a similar technique; it "infiltrates" your browser and reads the incoming sound data so it can cancel it out. Since it invasively captures data from your browser, the behavior is misinterpreted as that of adware.

ReplyDeletebloody wonderful thanks! To get it working I had to right click on the systray icon and tick settings: mute whole browser. Also, the volume bar doesn't seem to affect the volume until it hits the bottom and the mute checkbox becomes checked, killing the flash audio. Still, a work of genius!

I've managed to get it to work with Opera in Windows 7 Ultimate, without any tweaks (I believe there is still sound there, although so weak it's almost inaudible). When using XP I had to go through hoops to get it to work with Opera. It was annoying, but once completed it worked great and was definitely worth the effort.
ReplyDeleteThis tool is especially good for anyone surfing Traffic Exchange sites and clicking Safelist credit mails.. or have you ever heard 30 web pages with video playing simultaneously? It's like Jean Michel Jarre on crack (on the other hand: why would that be a bad thing?).
I use FireFox too, but Opera is my #1 web browser. I am just forever annoyed by their mostly useless widgets; whereas FF has a lot of great add-ons, Opera has.. Aquarium and 3D Tetris!
I know this blog post is dated far back, but wanted to confirm that Flash Mute still works, in most cases. Sometimes you'll have to tweak your browser to get it to work, though.
