Online Office Goes Mainstream

I heard the news about Google Docs & Spreadsheets on my favorite radio station. And the announcers seemed pretty enthusiastic about this. Their arguments were easy to digest: there is finally a real competition for Microsoft in the Office arena, you can edit your documents from anywhere and the tools are free.

Google has a big opportunity to take online office suites to the mainstream. Maybe they don't have the best features, but they are the most scalable. And this the winning point if you want to bring Office to the web.

  1. Cool, what radio station was it, if you don't mind me asking?

  2. It is really exciting, i've seen loads of sites going crazy over this (in a good way)
I used it to write a report last night for college, only thing i couldn't do within Google D&S was create a header/footer or create a Page of Contents.

I'm going to head over to the group to discuss these since these are two features that are used extensively and would make Google D&S so much better and attractive for end-users.

    RFI Romania [ live ]

There was another news about Google: Gmail Mobile available in Romanian, so it was a Google Day there.

  5. Microsoft dominates desktop OS's and "office" applications like Word, Excel and Powerpoint. If Google can convince users to start using these applications on-line, then everything can be done though browsers (no coincidence that Google loves Firefox). Then users won't need to rely on the familiar old Windows desktop either. In fact, you would be able to run on any OS as long as it launches a friendly browser when you start. It's a very real possibility and quite exciting too.
