Gmail is now a public beta in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, Brazil, Australia, Russia and Japan, according to BBC. If you live in one of those places, you can go to Gmail.com, and look for "Sign up for Gmail" or you can visit this page to create an account.
Note: I apologize for the partly inaccurate information, but Google is responsible for it. Maybe Gmail is not yet ready to go public.

ReplyDeleteI have browsed throughout the page and have tried various links. But i could not find the signup link. I found it at the Help page, but itis not working., It takes you to the Gmail login page.

Not everywhere... I'm in Germany and the homepage of gmail does not have this sign up link. I'm already using it since September 04
ReplyDeleteYes, it's official. Gmail is open EVERYWHERE. If you don't see the link on Gmail's homepage, you'll see it later today. Meanwhile, you can try the direct link.

ReplyDeleteI think this is bad decision. Invitations doesn't prevent anyone from getting gmail account, but this can be a good way to fight spammers:
If you spam, your account should be closed, and if you give invites to three spammers, your account also should be closed, and so on...

I guess the Gmail sign up page isn't like Santa - simply believing isn't good enough... ;-)
Luckily, this link posted in the Google Blogoscoped forum by David Hetfield works fine for me in the UK.
BTW, the Mail Fetcher feature is now available in around 10 family/friends' accounts that I've been able to check - and it wasn't there before yesterday.
great. now everyone is gonna sign up and they will have to make a "premium" version that you have to pay for and a free version like yahoo.

ReplyDeleteMan, I love my Gmail. I've never used a free email account so much and I don't even mind the ads that are in there. I'm glad more people are going to have access to Gmail as I'm tired of seeing people with some 2nd rate email account that can't accept a decent sized file or have a piece of junk spam filter that blocks the real emails and lets in all the spam!

ReplyDeleteI went there and no sign up button appears anywhere. Neither is there any information regarding the issue of them going public.
I don't know where you get your information but your sources are wrong, this is not available yet EVERYWHERE in the world.
You should not publish things on your blog without verifying the information. And next time a quote from a Google executive or a link to the news source that published the information would help to prove to your readers the veracity of what you're writing

You must be patient because Google has a lot of data centers and new features aren't available for everyone at the same time. I'm in Europe and the sign-up link works for me.
I'm in the States, and the Gmail login page still links to the SMS signup. And the direct signup link goes to the login page.

You need to receive and enter a special invitation code in order to create an account. Currently, we are only sending these codes as text messages to mobile phones. So you will need to have a mobile phone with text message capabilities (most phones have this) and the invitation code itself.
One of the reasons we are offering this new way to sign up for Gmail is to help protect our users and combat abuse. Spam and abuse protection are two things we take very seriously, and our users have been very happy with the small amount of spam they've received in their Gmail accounts. We take many measures to ensure that spammers have a difficult time sending their spam messages, getting these messages delivered, or even obtaining a Gmail account (spammers will often use many different accounts to send spam). Sending invitation codes to mobile phones via SMS is one way to address this, as the number of accounts per phone number can be limited.
If you want to open an account a different way, you may want to ask a friend with a mobile phone to receive an invitation code for you or to ask someone you know who already has a Gmail account to email you an invitation.

I would like to use the GMail website to access my email without actually opening up a GMail account or having to change my email address. Currently, I use the Yahoo website but Yahoo's service is getting very bad. Is it possible to simply use the Gmail website without downloading or signing up for the program, or having to change my email address?
