Steve Jobs announced that Apple TV, Apple's set-top box that allows you to play digital content from your computer on high-definition TVs, will receive an update that will enable it to play videos from YouTube. "This is the first time users can easily browse, find and watch YouTube videos right from their living room couch, and it's really, really fun. YouTube is a worldwide sensation, and Apple TV is bringing it directly from the Internet onto the widescreen TV in your living room," said Steve Jobs. The free update will be available next month.
Apple TV will connect to a custom YouTube site that contains a selection of popular and recent videos. YouTube will convert the videos to the H.264/MPEG-4 video compression standard so you can watch higher quality videos on your widescreen TV. "New content will be added every day and the entire YouTube catalog will be available by the fall."
the opera browser on nintendos wii is playing YouTube Videos as well!
ReplyDeleteXbox media center does the same.
ReplyDeleteDo we know if they'll be adding this option to Front Row, for Mac computers as well? It seems like an interesting new option, but it'd be a shame if they withheld it from everything but Apple TV.
ReplyDeleteThis is most definitely not the first time you've been able to easily watch this content in your living room. A whole host of other hardware platforms do this as well. Wii and Xbox as mentioned above (given the PS3's online functionality I'm assuming it's the same for that as well.) Plus several HTPC and wireless media platforms have had this functionality for quite some time. Good functionality to have for sure, but hardly groundbreaking. Then again, you could say the same thing about the Apple TV.
ReplyDeleteYeah, with ORB I can do this on my 360, it's also available on my wii. Not to mention, I can also use, google video, or any other video hosting site I feel the need to.
ReplyDeleteAnd, I don't have to wait for it to be transcoded.
