Google uses a special service for obtaining the favicons instead of loading the images directly. For example, Search Engine Land's favicon is generated like this:

When you first enable it, you can see that the favicons are being downloaded for each feed. Fortunately, it looks like they're all being cached from that point on. :)

I noticed this today. I like it. I don't use Reader that much, but decided to add some sites that I don't check on a everyday basis.
