New York Times reports that Google has partnered with Intel and Sony to create a TV platform powered by Android.
"Google and Intel have teamed with Sony to develop a platform called Google TV to bring the Web into the living room through a new generation of televisions and set-top boxes. (...) The partners envision technology that will make it as easy for TV users to navigate Web applications, like the Twitter social network and the Picasa photo site, as it is to change the channel. Google intends to open the Google TV platform, which is based on its Android operating system for cellphones, to software developers in the hopes of spurring the same creativity that the consumers have seen in phone apps."
The idea is not new, as many other companies tried to bring the Web to the TV. YouTube already has a version for large screens, Google already sells TV advertising and there are many Google apps that could improve the TV experience. New York Times says that Google's software will include a new interface for YouTube, a browser and other Android apps that will extend the functionality.
"Google has built a prototype set-top box, but the technology may be incorporated directly into TVs or other devices, like Blu-ray players. (...) A person with knowledge of the Google TV project said that the set-top box technology was sufficiently advanced that Google had begun testing it with Dish Network, one of Google's longstanding partners in the TV Ads program."
Wow. Another area Google wants to dominate. And will after while.
ReplyDeleteI think Google should follow what Noam Chomsky and Edward S. Herman point out in Manufacturing Consent when it comes to media. The US media is no better than China when considering the propaganda model.

Great news for the Dish TV or Satellite TV users. The TV users will become the internet users simultaneously. It will going to be a great experience . It will increase the internet use a huge degree. I think it will be not very complected using google tv and the use of set-top box .

ReplyDeleteI was about to ask why they wouldn't even consider using Chrome OS for this, it would be a perfect use-case for this, but then i read the end and saw that they already have prototypes built for it. Damn that was fast.
ReplyDeleteWith those 3, well, technically 4 with Dish Network, it has a lot of potential to work.
I have used one of those internet boxes for TV before and it was an awful experience simply due to the awful browser.
But considering Google has pretty much made their own browser now, it won't be much of a problem.
The Dish Network box they talked about, sounds like the new 922 that supposed to be released later this summer. It has Sling built into it, and a full web browser, and can be had with a wireless keyboard.
ReplyDeleteAs for Google being a major player in the tv space, it wouldn't surprise me if they can get manufactures and content providers on board. They could be the ones to help turn the industry around.

ReplyDeleteWhatever google offer will almost certainly be ad-funded - which is exactly what the TV market is rejecting, moving towards on-demand and TV-on-your-terms. I don't really see it.
ReplyDeleteSoon Google will have complete control of every technology we use. Google has gone from being a simple searchmachine to a boss of everything. And they want more, and they can get bigger, as long as the ads pay for their projects and not the consumers, just like they do it today.
ReplyDeletehas anyone thought what the input device would be? Android is mostly a touch screen and is designed to work with a keypad when present.. but i want to sit back and be lazy on my tv.
ReplyDeleteI'd like to see a set-top box that lets me set up profiles, like a computer... (for individuals, couples, or families).
ReplyDeleteGive me a chance to rate my commercials, so I don't have to watch the ones I don't need/like again... and Google could learn "what I like" and send me more cool ads (like Pandora does with music).
If a profile was set up for my kids, they wouldn't need to be exposed to alcohol and "prophylactics"... and they could let the 18+ commercials come through to adult profiles.
Google makes money off ads - so why not let me bookmark and rate them. I don't want to be able to put down my remote, just so I feel like I have control over what drivel is shoveled onto my screen during commercial breaks.
I don't think the TV will ever replace a computer, but if it becomes more interactive and personalized - I'd rather sit back and control it with a remote than use a keyboard and literally spell out what I want to watch.

So excited! Expect the tv world to be shaken and stirred by this development. Watch your favorite tv shows on sites like ganzefolgen.de (this one in Germany only) and bypass networks woth traditional serial programming. Now we choose what to watch and when ourselves. I expect Google Tv to make the giant leap from internet to the tv set

ReplyDeleteWhy a "rich" TV device? Why not a stateless device? like a Zero-Client or "Zero-TV"? maybe is more strategical alliances instead Cloud innovation?
ReplyDeleteGoogle TV doesn't need set-top boxes or complicated chips inside the TV. That's only make the TVs more expensive. Just only one Internet connection and Virtualized Chrome OS.
This would be a flop!!!!! All the set top boxes might be rendered useless, unless they provide a comprehensive tool which interacts with all the media at home.. It should have streaming option to stream music and videos from my other laptops or computers. I don't want to spend more money just for this one feature.. It should be a complete media center in on piece.

Google TV is definitely opening a new segment offering with browser capability and flash to bring web to TV. But the current package with its additional cost and current backlash by major studio sounds trouble. Seems newer improved software in waiting, with Google asking TV vendors to delay their Google enabled TVs
