Adobe Reader for Android

After releasing Flash Player for Android, Adobe launches a PDF reader for Android. The applications is available in the Android Market and it can be installed only if your phone runs Android 2.1 or later and it has at least 256 MB of RAM and a 550 MHz processor.

Nexus One already comes with a document viewer based on Quickoffice, but the application doesn't do a great job at previewing PDF files. Adobe Reader for Android opens PDF files much faster than Quickoffice and it has a better zooming feature.

"Adobe Reader for Android offers multi-touch gestures, like pinch-and-zoom, as well as double-tap-zoom, flick-scrolling and panning. We've also added a reflow mode, which will take text-heavy documents with wide margins, and automatically wrap the content for easy viewing on smaller screens," explains Adobe.

The application doesn't include basic features like search or support for password-protected files, but it's snappy, documents are readable and the applications opens in full screen. There aren't many free PDF viewers for Android and Adobe's application is clearly the best right now.

  2. On your Android device, once you open the reader, how do you find a pdf file. I do not see any function for opening docs from the menu.

I can open a doc using a file manager, download manager, email attachment and web page.

    Thanks

  3. The app is just a tool for viewing PDF files. You're suppose to use another application for browsing the file system. The built-in Quickoffice app doesn't even let you launch it directly.

  4. The slowness of HTC to update the Hero to 2.1 (been being pushed since last year Dec till next Jun) is really terrifying. There's nothing cool left in 1.5 camp. All new COOL stuffs are only for 2.0 and above. That makes me really think twice before getting HTC Evo. Will it ever join the fate of the Hero? Most certainly, with HTC's inability to port software at a fast pace. :s

  6. 256 MB ... pretty high requirement !
Adobe is really not used to ligthweight apps... (when I see how the acrobat reader even lags on my quad core DUO, 4GB RAM...)

But anyway it does work very well on my HTC Magic (188 MB RAM including video mem) at least with not too big pdfs (android 2.1 with cyanogen ROM)

  7. The slowness of vendors to update to 2.x, and the high memory requirements (256 meg!!!) are some of the reasons people have issues with Android. Say what you will about Apple, but they have a pretty consistent release schedule.

  16. Your tablet probably uses an old Android version. Adobe Reader requires Android 2.1 or a more recent version.

  19. Could someone tell me how do I delete a PDF document I don't want anymore from Adobe Reader App? I am using on a HTC EVO 4G.

    Thank you.

  20. The app only shows the files that are on your SD card. Use a file manager like Astro (available for free in the Android Market) to find the file and delete it.

  21. Thank you, Alex. I already installed Astro. And I just delete those pdf files from my card. Thank you again for your prompt reply.

  23. Is "text to speech" a function in Adobe PDF reader for Android? If not, any other ways or APPs to perform "text to speech" on an Android phone?

  26. Anonymous -- This is what I do on my HTC EVO 4G: Open the Astro's File Manager, then scroll down to the "Download" folder, you should see your pdf files there. Click and hold down on the file you want to delete, and you'll see all the options there.

I hope this works for you as well.
