The first Chrome 10 Dev Channel build bundles two HTML5 games: Poppit and Entanglement. The two games are added to the new tab page even if you've previously installed other apps.
Some users will probably be surprised to see two games they didn't install, so Google should inform users that the games were automatically installed. Chrome's source code makes it clear that Poppit and Entanglement are installed for all operating systems, except for Chrome OS. Probably a better idea would be to recommend some apps based on the browsing history.
{ Thanks, Dani. }
I saw these people up on my machine and was convinced chrome was hacked or my computer had a virus. This is a very disconcerting thing for google to do. The gmail app would have been one thing, but automatically installing a game on my computer?
ReplyDeleteActually, I'm pretty confident these both came pre-installed on my Cr-48 version of Chrome OS. I was a little put out about it, myself. On the other hand, I was able to uninstall them in like two seconds, and can appreciate Google trying to push the Web Store by partnering up. At the end of the day, if this were anything like the horror stories I've heard with 3rd party "crapware" on Android devices, I think I'd be more disgruntled about it.
ReplyDeleteThey should remove it. Beside, it's just a game.
ReplyDeleteI've just upgraded to Chrome 10.0.612.1 dev for Linux, and there are no games in the Apps section of the new tab page.
ReplyDeleteI would rather just have the Chrome store icon installed than two games that I will uninstall. I've tried both games and didn't like either.
ReplyDeleteI like Sinuous.
@ArgiaSbolenfi:
ReplyDeleteUpdate extensions manually: go to chrome://extensions, click "Developer mode" and then "Update extensions now".
Entanglement crashed inside tab. Chrome 10.0.612.1 dev (Linux, GPU Accelerated Canvas 2D is on, GPU Accelerated Compositing is on, nvidia 280)
ReplyDeleteI don't see any of these games in the Canary build (it's also at version 10) and I already did the manual extensions update.
ReplyDeleteAlso, I don't think Entanglement is completely Flash-free. I have my plug-ins set to load on click and the game doesn't load the tiles in this mode.
Alex, to the best of my knowledge these aren't installed. There's a promo that appears that allows you to click links that are effectively bookmarks. If you close the promo, it's gone for good.
ReplyDeleteWe're not bundling games with Chrome. We're showing what amount to a couple of links.
@Peter:
ReplyDeleteThe apps are actually installed. Check the Extensions folder and you'll find the two games. If you click "Hide this message", the apps are uninstalled.
Most of the apps from the Chrome Web Store are actually bookmarks, so that's not important.
I thought that poppit was redesigned to be an html5 game
ReplyDeleteWhether installed or just links, I don't like having things appear unannounced in my browser. Seems like a pretty tone-deaf decision to me.
ReplyDeletethese are the inbuilt games with the google operating system and they are linked with the various google products
ReplyDeleteThis game called Fancy Balls https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/melegmdnhhmncophogbiaodifoaokkga is much better than Poppit, and should be installed instead :)
ReplyDeleteAha. That explains it. They just showed up a week after I installed Chrome 9 beta, and like you said, I already had a few apps installed.
ReplyDeleteI didn't bother with Poppit. Entanglement looked interesting, but it didn't work like the instructions suggested (couldn't seem to rotate the tiles).
totally agree with jasonvaritekfan ... it would be sensible to put app stores icon rather than putting some random games'...

ReplyDeleteI was slightly surprised with these too.
ReplyDeleteEntanglement is quite fun, to rotate a tile you have to mouse over it first.
Poppit is entertaining but sort of infantile.
The Chrome App Store is a great idea though!
yeah...Entanglement seems interesting..
ReplyDeleteUm I had Entanglement and was slowly becoming very good at it not near the pros but close lol any ways I had to set my computer back to factory defaults and when I re-downloaded Google Chrome it was gone I want it back but have no idea how to get it if It's the 10 version now how do I download it and is it free????
