If you don't like the combined view, click on "subscription uploads" at the top of the page to only see the latest videos from your favorite channels. Unfortunately, the homepage is no longer customizable, so you can't hide the sections you don't use.
I don't really like it, it's quite clumped together. I liked things in their own sections...

Worst case of job justification to date, even outdistancing the beta page. All kinds of things broken on You Tube that you refuse to fix, but this you had time for. Give your users an option, stop making decisions on what a few people want.

I think Google is doing this on purpose, they know it sucks, and they just seem to want to appeal to the major producers Universal Films, Universal Music Group, Warner Music Group, etc. Within the next year or so YouTube will be completely unusable and eventually shut down due to decreased usage.

1 - the removal of choice, everything new forced upon us.
2 - the lack of ability to configure the new page. options also get ignored in prefs anyway eg. on video res.

4 - the removal of quick access to inbox and comments.
Sorry but I think they are morphing youtube to a commercial video site, as these are the sort of changes big media corp's would want. Some of it may be about copying facebook etc. as well which is also bad. I hate facebook and dont want youtube to be a clone of it.

The comment box is glitchy, we used to have easy access to our inbox...I DON'T CARE IF SOMEONE LIKED A VIDEO!!!! Lately it seems like I am at war with YouTube trying to fight all crappy design changes you try to make. I suggest Youtube to attempt to listen to their community more so there wouldn't be such bitter feelings between both parties. Possibly implement a poll on the homepage that would ask the users if they wanted these updates.
I don't even want to know it from friended people on youtube, let alone share my activities with the rest of the world. Didn't see an option to cusomize or disable the new homepage.

Plenty of them that don't keep screwing up the image search making slower computers run like molasses trying to load all those damn thumbnails at once. And plenty of search sites that aren't directly linked to video sites, so one won't corrupt the other.
Make one vid, and tell people that your boycotting from this moment, until whoever's running youtube/google finally gets it together, and starts caring more about youtube's users that youtube's ego. Or gets fired, since youtube can't get much worse for replacements.

What really gets me is the option to only view your subscriptions shows all the popular and trending videos as well. If I liked that, I'd be subscribed to it. Everything is just thrown together. Every favorite and like from somebody is front and center in "all activity". Click on the X to the right to remove it. However, do that too much, and all the popular videos will be displayed instead. I like my homepage simple, and clutter-free. For the love of God, stop pushing all these videos on me. I know these are the videos that make Youtube the money so I refuse to watch a single one.

ReplyDeleteThere's always initial backlash when a website rolls out a new homepage layout. But this one is truly justified. What the hell Youtube! There's very little customization possible. If I want to lose subscription's likes and favorites (which are totally useless) then I lose Youtube's recommendations as well. This blows!

Scrolling through the comments, there's a lot of passionate negativity I agree with, but let me give a simple list of questions, which seemingly (and INCREDIBLY!!!) the DESIGNERS didn't bother to ask themselves:
ReplyDelete1) Why is it MOST important for me (USER) to look at the recently favorited and liked videos? These are the most prominent on the new homepage. Am I supposed to look at the same videos everyday?!?!? What the hell is the Favorites list for (which is much longer usually than the sad 4 videos displayed on the homepage)!?!?!?
2) Why would I only want to see ONLY 4 recommended videos, buried in the middle of the homepage?? Expanding the list is not remembered for the next visit.
3) Why must I click to switch to my subscriptions, instead of them being there immediately???
4) Where's the list of categories?? Instead, you fill my homepage with videos some random people from my subscriptions favorited???
5) Cannot customize AT LEAST the order of the sections, remove sections, NOTHING is allowed, NOTHING is remembered (the 'see more' expansions)????
I might have missed some of the things on the list, but certainly not all, therefore the DESIGNERS managed to really destroy a good thing. I don't care if there is marginal improvement by having the inbox front-and-center instead of having to click on the link in the upper-right corner.
Please try to explain to me that 'I should give it a chance, and try to get used to the new features'.

While I do like the fact that my watched videos are greyed out, I hate almost everything else about it.
I know I am missing video uploads from my subscriptions and I find it funny that a video I watched over 5 hours ago pops up as being just uploaded 3 minutes ago but is greyed out...?? I want ALL my subscriptions in one box and I would like to be able to click on a username and see a grid of their videos...not just zipped to their chanel where I cant view comments.
C'mon...there are many unemployed designers out there, hire one that has some insight.

Searched for that too, but didn't find anything yet. I'm quite sure they will do something though. If they haven't by sunday I'm going to unfriend everyone (got <10 anyway), that way I at least see uploads from subscriptions rather than 'mrX likes those videos:'.
Boycotting youtube like said somewhere above, would only be an option if there was a good alternative. I find youtube the easiest to use though...

The only blogpost from google themselves about this. It has a moderation qeue, but I got through with my negative comment. Linked them to this page and suggested they read the comments. ReplyDeleteI found a way to change the idiotic new homepage of youtube. 1. unsubscribe from all your channels. Note that this won't prevent youtube from spamming you with your own subscriptions' favorites and other totally uninteresting things, so you have to do 2. block user. This way the chance that they spam your homepage is reduce if not eliminated. I am currently testing with 3. use Miro as an interface to access videos rather than youtube.
ReplyDeleteI have long used 2 things on the Youtube homepage, the search bar, and the subscriptions box. Those two were all I needed, and all I wanted. My only complaint was with something that should have worked but didn't, which was removing videos from the box. I didn't need the new homepage, and it has made navigating what I watch a pain. I don't need catagories for each uploader, the name under the video was enough. Please change it back to the previous format. Scrolling is a nightmare, and I really don't care about what my subscriptions like or favorite. I am asking as a dedicated user.

It's called YOUtube for a reason. this shitty new homepage is basically taking a dump on any channel that doesnt have over 100k subscribers. the homepage favors big channels. If you don't change back, I'll probably leave youtube. There's literally no point in being a user and a video uploader if I work hard on a video for it only to get like 500 views in comparison to my previous 3000+ views. ReplyDeleteThere used to be a nice area at the top where i could see the videos from my subscriptions that i haven't watched yet and they would disappear after i watched or canceled them, and the newer videos would appear in that spot. now i have to scroll through a long list and backtrack to find the videos from my subscriptions that I haven't watched yet because the new videos keep flooding the homepage. Not all of us are on youtube 24/7.. i want to watch the older videos before i start watching the new ones. also i can't find the top videos for each category anymore!!!!

So after watching a video it will continue to sit on your homepage, but greyed-out until you manually delete it.
ReplyDeleteWhy do videos on the homepage grey-out after you have watched them? I don't understand this "feature" and would appreciate if the Youtube staff could clarify it's purpose.
If a user clicks a video displayed on the homepage, it should then be deleted from the feed automatically. If the user likes the video enough to want to watch it again, then the video can be added to Favourites. There is absolutely no point in leaving a grey version still lingering on the already overly cluttered homepage.
Furthermore, the ability to see what Subscribers have Liked etc is not a popular feature. By all means have a tab available for the few people who make use of it, but don't leave it as the default display option, it's pointless.
To be honest I'm really not bothered by what you've done to the homepage. It's tacky, impersonal and difficult to manage. I'm using a script which reverts the page back to the original and far superior format. If only the same thing were possible for the channel pages...

Now, people have been telling you guys for months and months that no one likes this. Granted there are a few that do like it, but this isn't user friendly at all. This is the most un friendly site I've ever been too and it's getting ridiculous. It's like no one listens to what we're saying at all. People take the time to tell you how we all feel, and you ignore every single comment.
This is not Facebook. This site shouldn't look like facebook. Can't you just go back to the old design and leave things the way it was. Nothing was broken, people were finally happy and getting used to the new channels and everything and you go and do this just to make everyone more angry all over again.
So yeah, if it wasn't for all my favorites, I would honestly De-activate my account because I've just about had it with all these shitty updates.

ReplyDeleteWhy was it necessary for YouTube to have our friends list removed? How does anyone receive benefit from this? The friends list provided a viable means to distribute our videos to those people of similiar interest. It was also a means to introduce them to our channel. Now we are left with only our subscriptions which are not only more difficult to build up but they tend to be more of a one way means of communication. People didn't mind being friended but they are reluctuant to subscribe for whatever their reasons. Being left with no alternative, we must now collectively appeal YouTube's decision and request that our friends list be reinstated.

Youtube/Google doesn't care how inconvenienced you are unless it effects them. Keeping browsership up is all they care about.
I hate the new changes and can't see why they were necessary in the first place. Every single person I talk to says the same thing. Many people invest a lot of time creating and maintaining their channels, and viewership, to end up with something they hate through no fault of their own. Those people feel cheated. Perhaps you didn't take into account that some users like the social interactions they developed by means of their channel comments, list of friends and other features that have been eliminated. Why try to be more like FaceBook when many people enjoyed YouTube more than Facebook, but the way it was before? Lots of people are turned off. It boggles the mind! This time you REALLY messed up, maybe for good, though I hope not.

I just wanted to ask Youtube to give us the option to switch back to the old home page. It worked much better. For example, when I wanted to list my videos by "most viewed," it was easy under the old homepage, but nothing happens when I click that button under the new homepage.

I think the public should start a contest on how long it will take before youtube goes under... But all an all people they are not going to change back and they really do not care what you have to say. I really don't care to have all the recommended and liked videos at the top of the page. If I wanted to watch anything other than my subscriptions, I'd go search for it.

ReplyDeleteyou can't tell what's actually new and what isn't just something that someone has replied to that could be 5yrs old.
the old way you just select only show new uploads, hey presto.
and the perpetucance for YouTube to decide what i want to watch is blasphomy, HATE with a passion having to click on My Subscriptions every frigging time i load the home page, I don't care what You want me to watch or your suggestions. Leave them on the side where they are out of the way.
Should be spending time improving the server capabilities so we dont get constantly badly streamed video's and add the browser extensions into Youtube itself so you can set your viewing style to your liking. That would be far better then screwing up the design that was good.
ReplyDeleteWhat is it with companies doing that in the name of "progress" make stuff unintuitive, longer to get stuff done, irritating and in some case look like it was designed by a 3yr old. Windows 8 for example underneath that god awfull metro and the default UI of the desktop it's a great OS but the look is awfull, this is no different.
