When Google Reader released the new interface, I complained that sharing a post takes too many clicks: you first need to +1 the post, then click the share box and finally click "share". Now it's easier to share a post: just click the new "share" button and click "share" once again in the modal dialog.
Another advantage is that you can use the old keyboard shortcut for sharing items: Shift+S. Unfortunately, you can't use keyboard shortcuts in the modal dialog, so you still need to click "Share".
Decoupling the "+1" button from the "share" button is a good idea and Google should adjust the code of the +1 widget to make this possible. "Liking" and "sharing" are two different actions and should be treated separately, especially considering that +1's are always public, while sharing can be limited to a few people or circles.
{ Thanks, Zachary and Herin. }
No you didn't all you needed to do was click share in the top of the screen, it pulls the post your reading and lets you add a comment. Click share..job done!
ReplyDeleteIt's an improvement but they should still implement giving +1 via keyboard without waking up the sharing selection. :)
ReplyDeleteAnd sharing happens without mouse perfectly for myself, just use the tab key in the sharing dialogue and push enter when "Share" is highlighted.
Noticed it yesterday. Looks like Google is listening to the crowd. One last thing I need is 'Cozy' & 'Compact' options.
ReplyDelete@bemused:
ReplyDeleteYes, I mentioned this feature in a previous post, but it's not obvious.
Is it me or everyone else that the +1 button is not in Google Reader now?

And check out the BIG white spaces on both side of page. Duh.
@Mushaf If Google really listened to the crowd they would've taken notice of this annoying bug in Reader that's uhm... bugging a lot of people: http://j.mp/nG5dM0
ReplyDeleteThe Google Reader team have yet to respond to this issue, although it seems to be a spin-off of an old bug that's been haunting them for years now. (Then again, this could of course be the exact reason they're not responding...) Strange thing is, it's on their own help forum, their own designated spot to point out things that go wrong or are broken, and still they don't respond. Not a single message to acknowledge the fact that this is an issue that has to be dealt with. Quickly.
Anyway, until this is fixed I have no use for these sharing and +1 options. And if they finally maybe get round to fix it, there's still the trust issue that arises from this: how long until this bug or another one is rendering Reader partly or in whole useless again? How long do we have to wait for the Reader team to finally get their (support) act together?
It would be great if we could publish our +1 with a widget or something. Also, we need RSS feeds for both +1 and Shared items. RSS/ATOM is very useful if you want to publish a list of the sites/posts you liked.
ReplyDeleteI don't like the ugly share icon
ReplyDeleteWell, at least there is one way that you can use the keyboard alone: Shift+S, then hit TAB to fill in your comments, TAB down to the circles to backspace the pre-populated ones and type in new ones, TAB down to the Share button, then hit Space (or Enter).
ReplyDeleteThere’s another annoying regression: only part of the post gets shared. Anyone who wants to read all of it will have to click on the headline to load the source page separately. This means that people will read fewer things entirely due to the wasted time and effort involved. With Buzz, you could click on and Expand link to see the entire post; not so with Google+. This is my single “favourite” usability regression with the new Reader. (The fact that I have to use lots of CSS hacks to make the interface usable on my netbook is a close second.)
ReplyDeletenot cool share icon
ReplyDelete@David I agree about full content feeds. It's also my biggest disappointment with the new Reader. Ideally, we would use G+ circles as a way to steer full article content within Reader towards the people who it's best suited. If those same people are using the G+ interface, I think it'd be fine to show them the snippet view there (or the Buzz expand/collapse box as you suggested). But Reader folks already have article-reading as their context, may as well give them the article that's been shared.
ReplyDelete+1 button and share button and Google+ badge all are slow. 1MB DSL.
ReplyDeleteI agree it's slow
ReplyDeleteis it me, or after clicking on +1/share and having that pop-up, the keyboard shortcuts are unresponsive? o.O
ReplyDeleteI have been a Google Reader's user since two years and I am very disappointed with recent changes.
ReplyDeleteThe new Reader has only a way for sharing an article with people, doing a post on G+.
From my perspective this is a major issue and these minor improvements doesn't change the picture.
I like to share a lot of articles with friends and I like to do this without spamming their G+, so I think that G+ and Reader needs separated "places".
A feed aggregator simply doesn't fit with the social (G+) model and I miss a lot the old follow/follower way.
Ok, now allow me to use "L" to +1 something.
ReplyDeleteAnd show those buttons and options (and # of likes, er, +1s) at the top of posts as well.

ReplyDeleteThis will probably be added to Google+ search features or may be even under sparks.
I hope they release this code soon so we can see the share button everywhere. I personally think they should drop the whole confusing +1 of thinks like URLs and pages. You can +1 a google+ page but you can then also add them to circles. What is the point of +1ing a URL? Or something in an image result? There is no value to the end user as far as I can tell. "it improves search results." does it? Big deal. What do I care? I've already found it.
ReplyDeleteI would love to see back in reader the list of all shared articles. It is annoying to go to g+ to find out shared articles and I used it a lot to find back some news.
ReplyDelete@ laurent
ReplyDeleteI agree, I miss the shared articles list too. Plus the lists of articles shared by friends. Oh.. I have forgotten, actually I haven't reader's friends they are all gone. :-)
I would be the first ones to admit that Google+ still needs some work to be done, but that doesn't take away the fact that they are already a force to be reckoned with in the social media business. They have really established themselves in the field quite convincingly.
ReplyDeleteGlad they improved it. Expect a lot more improvements to come! :)
Thanks for explaining this part of Google: "Liking" and "sharing" are two different actions and should be treated separately, especially considering that +1's are always public, while sharing can be limited to a few people or circles. Google search
ReplyDeleteWhat about the mobile site? This button isn't there...
ReplyDeleteWhen you share an article on Google+ through the Google+ web site there is a photo or graphic that automatically shows up with the post which you can change or delete. When you share an article on Google+ through the G+ Share button in Google Reader or through the +1 extension for Chrome you don't get the option of having a photo or graphic posted with the article. The article is less likely to be read without the accompanying graphic.
