Import Contacts in the New Google Contacts

When the latest version of Google Contacts launched last year, many features were missing. It looks like one of these features is back: you can now import contacts without switching to the old UI.

You can import contacts from Yahoo Mail, Outlook.com, AOL or from other email providers. If you want to import contacts from a CSV/vCard file, you'll still have to switch to the old interface.

Google uses a third-party service called ShuttleCloud for importing contacts. "To continue, you'll need to give ShuttleCloud temporary access to your contacts data, including names and email addresses," informs Google.

Another missing feature was restoring contacts. You can now "restore your contacts to any state within the past 30 days, recover deleted contacts, undo an import, or undo a merge."

Exporting contacts and printing contacts still require to go back to the old UI.

  1. I saw in my google dashboard, that there are contacts stored within services that became inactive. I e.g. found a certain number of contacts within google talk. I wish I could manage them from within google contacts, so that they wouldn't be stuck within inactive services. Is there a way to do that? Or is this still impossible?

    1. Here's the Google Talk hidden group from Gmail Contacts: https://mail.google.com/mail/u/0/?ui=2#contacts/group/2/Chat I don't think you can remove contacts from hidden/built-in groups like this one because they're supposed to be managed from their own apps, not from Gmail.

    2. Hangouts replaced Google Talk/Gmail Chat, but you can still switch to the old Chat interface in Gmail. Then you can use these workarounds: http://webapps.stackexchange.com/questions/19406/removing-someone-from-gmail-chat-list

      1. "Delete his contact. That should make him disappear from your chat list. Now add the same contact again, but this time with some variation of number of dots or their positions. That's it. The email will still be there in your contacts, but will have vanished from the chat list."

      2. Another option is to mouse over a contact from the chat list, click the small arrow from the card and click "block". More about chat blocking: https://support.google.com/chat/answer/161879?hl=en

  2. Thanks, but this shouldn't be so difficult to solve this issue. I understand that you can't manage contacts from within gmail, but it should be possible to do this from within google contacts itself. I think I will try to send feedback and only can hope that google itself will solve this issue.

  4. I'm wondering if google contacts automatically merge contacts with the same name but no other data in it into one contact? I don't think so, but another app that I use told me google contacts deleted some contacts, and the support team of that app named fullcontact told me that it must be google contacts or another app that does the automerge.

  5. I just want to scream sometimes.... I routinely import list of people into contacts. WHEN is google going to actually allow import directly from Google Sheets. I am sure they see this as very low demand, since they count everything. Oh Well...
