Gmail Chat in Opera

If you like Gmail Chat and you use Opera, there's a simple tip that will make you happy.

Download the latest build of Opera 9 (warning: Opera 9 is still pre-beta). Then go to gmail.com, logout if necessary, press F12, select "Edit site preferences", go to Network tab and select "Mask as Firefox".

Login to Gmail and you'll now have Gmail Chat in Opera.

Update: Gmail Chat works in Opera 9.10, thanks to a workaround in browser.js.

  1. When "masing as Mozilla" with build 8393, the contact list for gmail chat will appear, but it only lists my username and "Loading ...". Is anyone else having problems with gmail chat and build 8393?

  2. Same thing happens to me as well. Opera build 8393. Why does this happen. It works fine in IE7, but but when masking opera as IE if fails completely saying there is no ActiveX support.

  3. You have to identify as Opera (press F12) AND mask as Mozilla (press F12, then "Edit site preferences / Network"). Refresh if needed. Works with build 8414 for me

  4. Am I the only one having the problem that when I go to gmail with Opera, "Loading..." appears in the top left corner of the browser window for many seconds and CPU usage is maxed out (affects audio playback and other operation). Once the page loads it's fine. Unless I refresh, then it goes through the same thing again...
    Anyone else?

  9. It almost worked fine with me... Sometimes when I click on an online friends name to open a chat box my screen turns black and I have to refresh the window.. weird crap, no?
If I wait for the popup box and then press the "Chat" button it works fine..
    Any ideas?
