Gay Google

Caleb Eggensperger noticed that Google shows a multicolored bar above the search results when you search for [gay], [lesbian] and other related terms. Google's colorful bar is not accidental: at the end of June, there are many gay pride celebrations around the world.

"Googlers care deeply about creating a workplace that affords equal treatment for all our staff, and while we do it regardless of any accolades we think our efforts might bring, recognition from outside organizations does mean a lot to us. (...) It's particularly exciting given that this is a time of rapid growth for our population of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender employees (whose group name is, naturally, Gayglers) around the world," mentioned a blog post from 2007.

  1. Just in the spirit of equality, they should introduce a whole lot of other colour bars as well.

I also noticed that they don't display any bar when I search for "straight".

  2. Yeah, I'm with gravi_t. Nothing special happens when I search for "privilege." All it does it show some dictionary entries that I don't have the time to comprehend.

  3. O dear, Google doesn't display a colored bar when you search for "straight". The internet is full of lovely remarks about being gay and now they also get their own colored bar on Google??? It's so difficult being straight nowadays.

As a gay male I feel all the shitty remarks I have to put up with are suddenly swept away by this colored bar on Google. I pity all you straight guys for not having the "privilege" of a colored bar on Google. I will definitely complain to Google about this serious lack of equality.

  5. Umm, let the gay people enjoy that colored bar... we're just going to enjoy legal, normal, preferable treatment ;)

  6. Again with all the str8 people talking about our privileges... As if we can kiss or hold hands in public without some kind of reaction and you can't.

Everyday is str8 pride day. What's your problem?

  7. Um, Anonymous.

Everyone here is joking, except maybe gravi_t and you. Lighten up and enjoy the Google fabulousness while it lasts :-) Moreover, enjoy the overreactions from uptight people if they bother to notice.

  9. It's one more privilege given by the gay lobby to themselves.

  10. What a catch-22 -- the rainbow-flag discriminates against the gay folks. If they want to be a part of ending the discrimination, there has to come a point at which they stop pointing it out.

  12. Give us a break! I mean come on for crists sake, I have to sit in a catholic school and pretend to be straight, I think little things like this help tell us who we are, so we shouldn't have to hide from the face of our fabulousness, as it were :D xxx

  14. Oh look! Another "Open-Minded" person, persecuting someone who doesn't agree with them, and has their own opinion. How open minded of you, yay! Congratulations! Ding ding ding! You've won the coveted HYPOCRITE award! Treasured by liberal and open minded people the world! Tell them what else they've won Johnny! Well they've won a life of pushing their views and beliefs in others, and the right to call them close minded if said people don't agree with them! That's right Bob, another backward-ass day in BIZZARO LAND! Now, let's hear a word from our hypocrites themselves....
