Cheaper Google Storage

Google updated the pricing for the additional storage you can buy in Gmail and Picasa Web Albums: $0.25 per GB per year.

Google says that the storage is shared between Gmail and Picasa Web Albums, but it's obvious that the additional storage will mostly be used in Google Docs, when the service morphs into Google Drive.

"While storage costs have been dropping naturally, we've also been working hard to improve our infrastructure to reduce costs even further. Today, we're dramatically lowering our prices to make extra storage more affordable. You can now buy 20 GB for only $5 a year, twice as much storage for a quarter of the old price, and enough space for more than 10,000 full resolution pictures taken with a five megapixel camera," explains Google.

If you've already purchased Google storage, there's a good news: "Your total storage will be increased according to this page at no extra cost. For example, if you had previously purchased 10 GB of Google storage, you now have 80 GB available."

I wonder how much free storage Google Drive will offer when it's released.

  1. I confirm that my (old) account has been updated up to 80GB !
That's great for Picasa ! (and Docs of course, but this one need improvments first).
GDrive, Google, give us GDrive ;-) !!

  6. It seems someone at Google forgot division - I'm checking the update storage page and seeing this:

Free storage you are currently using:
    Google Mail - 0.25 GB (0%) of 7.27 GB
Picasa Web Albums - 0.54 GB (0%) of 1 GB

It seems 0.5 GB is 0% of 1 GB.

  7. Do you suppose that Google will include a Dropbox-like program with the release of GDrive? That would probably sell me on purchasing some extra space.

  8. But now, security becomes the top concern. With a single password, everything in the google account can be changed, such the password, secondary email address, security question, cell phone number, even the account can be totally deleted. It is good to have more storage space, but we also need more security control.

  9. This is unfortunate. My account still shows the old pricing tiers and my storage still shows the 10 GB max.

I haven't seen any indication that this is "slowly rolling out" and I have only seen people report that they see the changes. Am I the only one?

  11. More security : YES ! Google services are great but is only protected with a password. Google ask me to enter my phone number. But if someone steals my phone, it's even worse ! Indeed, the man who stole my phone can ask Google to send him a news password on the phone, isn't it :o ?!
I really need more security Google !

I 'd like to have a "postal" rescue : if someone stole my account, I 'd like to have possibility to have it back by sending a postal mail to Google and wait for a postal answer from GG. Sometimes old system are so great :) !! And I really want to pay for more security !!!

  12. One thing I would LOVE to see is sub-albums. Really, I am uploading 110GB of photos to Picasa right now that I have spent good 5 hours rearranging, when I could have used this time more productively.
