Blogger's Slideshow Feature

Blogger added a feature that makes it easier to view multiple photos. When you click on an image from a Blogger post, a LightBox-like overlay shows a bigger version of the image and lets you view the other images in a slideshow. The feature was borrowed from Google+, it's enabled by default and can't be disabled from the settings page.

If you want to open an image in a new tab, middle-click on the URL displayed below the image or right-click the link and select "open link in new tab". The slideshow supports keyboard shortcuts: left/right arrows, j/k, n/p to navigate, Esc to close the slideshow.

  2. Put a second photo in this blog post and we will not need the screenshot itself. We can try it out for ourselves!

  6. I'm not sure I'd call this a "feature". It's wrecked my blog and ruined my experience when viewing similar blogs hosted on blogspot. It's also very slow.

  7. I don't really see the point for this. It makes no sense for smaller photos. People who need it could add it through third party tools.
And not allowing it to be turned off is kinda evil, Google!

  8. It makes even no sense for big photos! Big photos like infographic become limited to screen size.

    Bad.

  9. Bloody great!!
Multi images on my daily blog (only for me in my senior years!!).
    Thanks Google...

  10. Bad. Very Bad.

For my photo-blog the feature limits the view to smaller image size and ruins the ability to see a closeup.

There should be choice to opt-in or out,

  11. All the way there, as do snippets!
This is breakthrough only new thing that must be developed in the future.
Let us build that better together...ayeeee \m/

  13. Looking at the code I see that there will probably some kind of ADMIN control for the LIGHTBOX.

  14. It doesn't work on my blog?

Maybe because I use Live Writer to compose and upload, rather than native editor?

  15. On my blog, any photos posted over 18 months ago do not appear in the slideshow. Instead, a small red rectangular box appears in the photo, and the slideshow itself does not proceed. (This phenomenon occurs in Firefox; not sure about Internet Explorer.) See: http://troop60147.blogspot.com/2010/03/3-15-10-girl-scouts-98th-anniversary.html

    Any ideas on this?

  16. Seems like a waste of time, of course, I don't run a photo blog but it sounds like I'm glad I don't.

  17. This "feature" is injected into your template behind the scenes by the server.

    Discussion: http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/blogger/thread?tid=73493b0be3a4116d

Solution: Do a HTML/Javascript-widget with the js code mentioned at: http://englishjavadrinker.blogspot.com/2011/09/fixing-bloggers-mistakes.html

    function killLightbox() {...}

  18. Ok, just checked my other blog, on some of my instructional images I put a caption underneath them saying "click for larger image", I guess that's pointless now, way to mess everything up Google!

  19. This is horrid, in my books. My readers have downloading things based on my instructions to click photos & save as and now it is ultra confusing for those with basic computer skills. Sigh. Thanks for posting about how to use it though...

  20. It doesn't work at all on older pictures. How much worse can it get, really?

  21. This so called improvement was foisted on all Blogger users without any consultation. It is poorly designed, and crucially does not allow zooming in , which is the whole point of photo blogs. Blogger is not a social network, and most posts have single images attached to them. Lightbox is an album viewer, more suited to facebook-style interaction. There has been a massive outcry against this here: http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/blogger/thread?tid=73493b0be3a4116d&hl=en

If you are affected, please consider posting a complaint

  22. It's a bad feature. Doesn't work with older photos, takes forever to load many photos into the thumbnail thingy, doesn't allow for enlarging pics to see details. I really hate it, and would really like for blogger to make it optional.

  23. I am not able to notice it in my login? Is it in Beta kind of something?

  24. Im trying this one. But please update it is sometimes slow to load.

  25. I DO NOT like this slideshow feature.
Please make it an option so I can OPT OUT! Thanks!

  26. This can now be turned off!

Go to Settings>Formatting>Showcase images with Lightbox>No

  27. this is a disaster when you reach one of these blogs from a mobile browser. It's impossible to get the actual picture in a viewable position (in mobile Safari at least)

  28. This feature does not work on my blog period. It works on another blog perfectly and honestly I'd rather just use another slideshow template than to try and find out why this doesn't work for me.

  29. Why would anyone want to look at blogs using a feature that makes pictures smaller -- when we all like to look at full-screen size photos? Please, Google, take it away.
