Smooth Scrolling in Google Reader

Google Reader's settings page has a new section where you'll find "experiments you can choose to opt-in and try out". It's like a small Google Reader Labs that only has a single experiment you can enable: smooth scrolling. This feature makes the transition between items smoother and it's especially useful in the expanded view.

While this feature is more difficult to find, you've probably noticed the colorful ball that's displayed when Google Reader loads new posts. The animation is one of the few colorful elements from the new Google Reader interface.

{ Thanks, Venkat. }

  1. Still don't get what that rather dowdy ball is good for.

  2. The release that added the colorful loading indicator also added the gear menu with a density control (in the style of Gmail's and Docs').

  5. Artical is 3 hours old? Been using smooth scroll for over 10 hours now. Surely announcements are meant to come before or even at the same time as things appearing? Not after?

  6. Huh? WORMSS, you understand that this is not an official Google blog and therefore what you get here are not "announcements" but news and tips?

  10. The smooth scrolling experiment didn't make reader scroll any faster in item view for me.

  11. Am I the only one that saw scrolling performance get worse when this feature was enabled?

    It seems like the scroller blocks whenever the browser has anything else to do.
