YouTube Redesigns Video Pages

After months of experimenting with new layouts, YouTube launched a new design for video pages. YouTube's goal was to simplify "the look and functionality of the video page", so it replaced the rating system with two buttons (like/dislike), it combined the list of related video with the list of videos from the same author.

"Information about a video is now grouped together in one place and there's a consistent way to get more detail when you need it. This way, unless something's truly useful to you, it doesn't clutter up your page," explains YouTube.

Popular comments are now highlighted, buttons look slicker and playlists have a more intuitive interface. Unfortunately, the description of the video is too short, you need to click on a button to see the embedding options and it's difficult too spot low-quality videos without actually watching them. YouTube removed 5-star ratings, but it didn't find a good way to show if users like or dislike a video. In fact, to see the number of likes or dislikes, you need to click one of the two buttons.

  1. It's no good. Change it back. No one likes it anyways. Lego animators are thinking about ditching YouTube and going to bricks in motion.

  2. So where's the button to hide the comments?

  8. It amazes me that the web designers for a billion dollar company could only muster this turd of a product after eight months (!) of supposed testing in beta.

That's a level of incompetence that's without precedent.

Google: If you're gonna aim low, aim down all the way. Let's not half-ass things. Let's completely ruin them.

Wait for a while then developers will release a new script for downloading YouTube videos.

  12. The service is free. I suppose that the YouTube team knows a lot more than me what is the tendency of the interface in the internet world more than i do. Then, every change is welcome. If doesn't work, i'm sure they will make the changes in order to work. The more dramatic change is the rating method. Right know, without seeing the stars, you are pushing to apply your own criteria to rate a video, without knowing the overall rate of it.

  13. I hate it. I am unable to download videos I would like to watch later

  18. i usually like change. for context, whenever people are complaining like crazy people every time facebook makes a change to the layout i'm one of the people saying "what the hell guys, its really not that bad!", because those changes were never really much of a big deal

that being said, these youtube changes are awful. simply awful.

  19. Like Orkut, they should provide a "Button option" to "Switch Back" to Conventional YT.

  20. I think they should have a little dot or colored circle under each video going from deep red to bright green that shows the "overall mood" of the video, AKA likes give it +1 green, dislikes give it +1 red, and make the little dot the color of the overall mood.

  26. ALIVE YOUTUBE VIDEO CONVERTER DOES NOT ACCEPT THE URL WHEN COPIED FROM THE ADDRESS LINE. I SEE NO IMPROVEMENT SINCE THE CHANGE AND WOULD LIKE TO SEE THE OLD PROGRAM BROUGHT BACK.

  27. Im not sure why they deleted the old "Download as mp4" post they made... so does that mean since youtube switched the design, the "get youtube video" link will not work anymore?

  28. If you're looking for the Greasemonkey script that lets you download YouTube videos, it's here.

    ReplyDelete
  29. We, the people, commonly hate the changes. But it is a matter of custom. With some time we will like. I think it is more clean, is like a minimalist design. It gives more relevance to the video that you are watching and the related videos. It is ok.

  30. @ Alex : any chance you'll make that great MP4 1-click bookmarklet comaptible again ? That Greasemonkey script you mentioned above just opens the vid on a new page in FF. Bummer ...

    ReplyDelete
  31. @Anonymous:

The script should work well in Firefox. Try the latest version of the script and see if it works better. If it still doesn't work, post more details about the problem (which format you try to download, what happens when you click on the download menu, the other extensions/plug-ins you use and might conflict with the script etc.)

I'm not sure if it makes sense to convert the script to a bookmarklet, but it's not very difficult to do that. I had to remove the post about downloading YouTube videos because Adsense's terms of use prevent you from breaking the terms of any Google service and YouTube says it's not OK to download videos. The script continues to be available at userscripts.org and the new UI is much better.

  32. To say the new format is not an improvement is the biggest understatement I think I could make, its simply not only unusable now but frustrating and irritating all at the same time, functionality has been thrown out of the window and nothing has replaced it, I can't even attempt to see this as a style over substance argument as this new layout as it stands has zero style.

    ReplyDelete
  33. @ Alex : I'm glad to report that my troubles have now disappeared. I uninstalled the script that failed to work and installed 0.996. Now FF (Mac) opens a proper Save dialog box ! I used your bookmarklet in Safari, my main browser, but using FF for YouTube downloads is no big handicap. I'll have to try the script with a Safari compatible Greasemonkey version ( http://8-p.info/greasekit/) at some point in the future. Thanks for taking the time to answer my post above, much appreciated !

  34. when viewing a youtube clip, the progress bar now overlays the film. also the timer was better on the right hand side.useless and unnecessary.

  35. That childish tutorial was poorly presented.Everything you 'changed' was just moved around.- now there's no link to related videos which used to show 'see all '49' videos.Channels and subscribe were already there in those 'easy to use boxes '-I agree with the April 11th/10.46pm and April 20th/2.52am 2010 comments.

  36. new youtube red play/pause bar covers the video.no link to related videos or channel names - change can be good, BUT WE DONT NEED SQUARE WHEELS !!!

  37. This new interface is NOT very good..

1- It used to be much easier to add a video to the quick play list by simply clicking the green plus sign.
2- It used to be very easy to remove a video from the quick play list
3- The quick list & user's videos used to remain open after click a video from the list, now you have to reopen them every time you want to play another video.
4- Rating comments does not increment the ratings count.

The old interface was much better!!!

  38. To me, the new UI is an improvement. Not a huge change, but enough to notice a bit of a better experience.

  39. I personally like the new design of YouTube website, because its more user friendly than previous design and it loads much faster than before because of its HD and 3D options, which carried almost every new streaming with.

  40. Old designs were better than the new ones.
