Google's Experimental Black Navigation Bar

A while ago, I spotted a black navigation bar in a Google page and wondered if it's a bug or a new Google experiment. It turns out that it's yet another experiment.

At least three readers of this blog saw the black navigation bar on Google's homepage today.

YouTube also tests a black player, so the two experiments could be connected.

Update: A lot of people see the new design, so it's hard to say if it's a test or a gradual roll-out. If you clear Google's cookies, do you still see the black bar?

{ Thanks, David, Francesc and Don. }

    Say bye to black bar."

Seriously? It bothered you that much that you had to waste time making a greasemonkey script for it?

If people would spend as much time on things that mattered as they do on useless things on the internet, the world would be amazing. ""

I guess you with your needless comment wasted your own time.

I applaud the guy for the Greasemonkey script....a big thank you - I've installed it and it works like charm...

  2. I've got it, and I hate it. I hope they change back quickly. I really liked the light-colored bar.

They also changed the bar when you access it through a mobile browser, adding large picture icons. I don't like that either.

  3. I wish Google would stop making this type of change without at least giving us an option of whether we want it or not. I HATE the black toolbar! I also dislike iGoogle. I keep changing it back to the Classic Google, but every time my computer is restarted, there it is again. Hey Google, if it ain't broke, don't fix it!!!

  4. It makes it hard for an old man with vision difficulties to read. Please give us a choice so we don't have to change browsers.
    Thanks.
This seventy-two year old loves to search the web.

  5. It's just sooooooooo negative, please Google admit that you made a boo-boo.

  6. Also noticed it since a few days.
    No difference using other browser.
    Don't like it.
No other way to undo this black bar??

  7. This is the longest crap Google ever created then place it on more & more pages...

It's like Google falling in a damn Black Hole!
This colour, or any colour except WHITE or TRANSPARENT (aero like) it's fundamentally wrong for Google to use as background for the navigation bar!

    ReplyDelete
  8. I saw it today too...aaand yesterday.....and the day before....etc...

  9. Possibilities
1 Google has no older people working there so that stupid ideas get past quality control without any intelligent discussion.

2 Google hates people with vision problems.

3 Google died and this is its funeral notice.

4 No one at Google actually works on a PC and so has no understanding of what real screens look like and how people use them.

The black bar ranks down there with the horrendous Mario game boondoggle - somewhere below stupid into unfathomable ignorance of the real world where real people work...

  10. I'm praying that Google sees what a bad idea this is . . . . SOON.

    ReplyDelete
  11. It looks cheap and depressing. As a bad advertisement.

    ReplyDelete
  12. The new black toolbar Google has rolled out is against Web Content Accessibility Guidelines as recommended by the w3.

Gray text against a black background does NOT ensure that foreground and background color combinations provide sufficient contrast when viewed by someone having color deficits or when viewed on a black and white screen.

    Please see: http://www.w3.org/TR/WAI-WEBCONTENT-TECHS/#tech-color-contrast

    ReplyDelete
  13. Am I the only one who likes it. I think it looks good and it fits in with my background image. But I think there should still be an option to change it back.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Perhaps the marketing fools have no idea why monitors with a black border around the screen could never comply with the TCO-03 norm...

    Users of the Internet, unite!

Here is another partial fix for Google's wanton act of corporate arrogance:

  15. I don't like it!

    ReplyDelete
  16. It is hideous, disgusting, and smacks of arrogance. It's just like how Google Instant is shoved down our throats as the default setting.
That's exactly it, I don't care if a company wants to try some new design but don't FORCE me to accept it without the very simple option of having a choice.

    ReplyDelete
  17. I think this must be some kind of sick joke on
    Google's part.

Anyway, just found this new search engine called Yahoo or something and it seems pretty good to me - faster than Google and returns fewer commercial junk links. I could get used to it pretty soon.

Do the right thing Google, and sack whoever's idea it was.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Why?????
Is there a Google VP who needs to do this crap to justify his/her existence and $$$salary???

Grey letters on a black background????
    WTF???
    Unreadable!!!
At least give users a choice, then pay the dickheads who made this decision a proportion of their salary according to the number of users who opt for it.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I really dislike this black bar. Please add it as colour-option to the settingspage so I'm able to choose a former layout. Thanks in advance.

    ReplyDelete
  20. I hate the bar. Leave us alone Google. Don't "F" this clean page up.

    ReplyDelete
  21. You can also use the Stylish plugin for Firefox or Chrome to change it back. http://userstyles.org/ There are several user-made options already there which fix it, and which work for the many countries' versions.

Take control of the look of web sites you visit!

    ReplyDelete
  22. Another comment... I am not a big fan of yahoo's search engine, but if you go to:

    search.yahoo.com

then there is a clean, clutter free page just like Google.

  23. oh noes GOOGLE! dont you realise that your killing little children with this black bar and it's soooo ugly!! i use it all the time because I never have more than one google app open at a time so I HAVE to use this bar to navigate between your different applications like gmail, reader, docs, sites, etc. how am i suppose to use the internets now!!1?? WHAT?

I will have 2 start using bing because they have a nice white on grey bar instead which i find MUCH easier to se..

please PLease Derek Shmith, make your people change it back or i think i will die!!!1!

  33. Hello,
I am in USA, and I started to search online (in Google) if this was a bug or if everyone had it. I decided after reading your post that I think that google is slowly going through and changing them to black for tests to see if we like it, and they can tell by posts like this. But, unfortunately, that probably cannot be said because it would take time to research each and every person and get every IP and do all of the time for that. So, I conclude, that there probably are just different areas that they (The black navigation bars) are in. I myself have no opinion to the black bars, and I hope that nobody else really gives much notice to them. I guess I just searched it because I was curious. If you have any questions you think I might be able to answer about the problem, you can email me at, ummmm, pat@example.com.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Black bar is too bold/contrasty. Get rid of it. And in mobile Safari on iOS 4, the huge icons are a real problem. When you first go to Google and touch the X to enter new search terms, then start typing in the window, the icons go from small to large and suddenly you find you have selected the 2nd or 3rd tab and are no longer searching the Web. A terrible interface design flaw. I did not ask for big icons and I do not want them. I will switch now to Yahoo or Bing.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Quote: "Seriously? It bothered you that much that you had to waste time making a greasemonkey script for it?"

Google is not above criticism and the responsibility to provide an option rest w/ the company that wrote the annoying software. It's rude, impolite, arrogant i.e. not the way to do software - TO NOT PROVIDE AN "X" TO SET IT BACK TO THE CLASSIC FORM OR TO NOT PROVIDE AN EASY-TO-FIND OPTION TO CHOOSE THE COLOR. By the way you freaking google goon troll, breaking UI familiarity can easily "bother" millions people and therefore waste countless hours with people trying to figure out what it is and turn it off. People need familiarity and CONSISTENCY.

I agree that it's too agressive.
I don't get the its purpose.
Hope Google guys will take it out.

    ReplyDelete
  37. this is just plain stupid, i actually thought it was an error, in fact it simply appears that someone has inverted the colours of the bar, it does nothing, i liked it when it was given a more smooth look, but tbh, this is annoying, and the more recent change to the look of the search ting, in web mode is just pointless... you're annoying me

    ReplyDelete
  38. Hate the black bar. Is it me or is Google getting worse? Do they listen to users? How about a SIMPLE design? How about the OPTION to keep the original settings? Have not thought about switching to other Search Engines until the past recent months. Keep it simple.

  39. GOOGLE WHATS UP WITH THIS BLACK BAR,ARE YOU ALL ON CRACK YOU ALL ARE A BUNCH OF SCREW BALLS TO PUT SOMETHING ON HERE LIKE THIS !!! PLEASE GET RID OF IT....

  45. Google, have you seen enough yet? Get it sorted !

    ReplyDelete
  46. It does seem rather arrogant and counterproductive for Google to dump this on us with no option to keep the old one...which is not an eye sore and blends in with all other themes.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Very bad. How to get back the older one?

    ReplyDelete
  48. Yeah I've removed the fckg black shit bar, but how to get the language tools option back on the page?
I know we can find it in the option but I'd like to have it as it was!
Really not very smart from Google to force us instead of letting us tune the page the way we like it.

...... Mr gOOgLE, please not the black bar experiment not right now it is so inappropriate in view of where we are going, nationally as a people, it has an ‘arm band’ feel about it and we as a nation are struggling to avoid the beginning of the beginning and you amongst most should see that sad trend emerging. Please cut it out and stop rocking the boat there’s enough of that on the horizon without you [google] getting in on the scary action.

  54. I do NOT like the new black bar at the top of the Google search results page. Please remove it or give users an option to remove it. It is WAY too distracting, & ruins the look of any background design.

Also, you're alienating users with visual disabilities - NOT a good PR move

Where is Advanced Search???? Language Tools? arghh!

If you want some new feature to be tied in, just make some new colored button, not this distracting, ugly, black bar!

  55. I am not very computer savy. It is a new learning experience for me every time I turn this machine on. I am a creature of habit and when I find something I like I really try to STICK WITH IT. I don't like change. Now, I don't mean to sound crass or give the impression that I am a low life, so please excuse me when I say STOP FUCKING WITH MY COMPUTER!!!!!! Please put the damn thing back the way it was prior to today 30 June. While trying to remove the black bar, I have pressed every damn thing on this box and I probably have removed more things than I should have. Wouldn't it have been somewhat polite to notify people or maybe even ask permission? How would you like it if I came into your house one day and all of a sudden your underware was in a different drawer, your toothpaste was where your shaving cream was and your mouthwash and underarm spray were switched? Pissed...upset... I'll bet. Please, leave me alone and put the friggin thing back the way it was and give us/me the option to change.........if we so desire.

  83. There is some debate as to how many people like the incessant google frivolous UI changes and how many don't. Here's the true test. If google kept their annoying UI inventions off by default, and made everything an option when it's released, no-one would use it - THAT tells you how many people "like" their busy, annoying, wrong-color UI BS. A classic interface choice should ALWAYS be provided for users.

    1. It is visually jarring and disconnects you from the Google Home Page.

    2. The white 'background' lettering is too small and very hard to read.

    3. The longer the Black Bar is foisted upon us, the more we will believe that Google is truly insensitive to the popular demand for a default browser that is truly simple and not the result of Larry Page and Sergey Brin and their minions sequestering themselves into a sound-proof turret.

  109. How to remove Google's Black Navigation Bar:

Many people complain about Googles Black Navigation Bar,
When you use Google as your home page. I have spent hours
On the Web for answers and nobody had one, until I figured,
How to get rid of it. It is very simple. Don't use Google.
Use another Search Engine. Like Webcrawler, Yahoo, Lycos,
Alta Vista etc. That is it! No Black Bar and Google looses
A bunch of Money. I like Google but I don't like that Black Bar.

Why should I have to install additional and unwanted programs/scripts/what-have-you in order to eliminate a black bar that causes me to take additional steps in order to do what I used to be able to do with one click. The menu items that used to be where the solid black bar now sits were very useful.

Is Google becoming another Microsoft or eBay?

Sure looks that way. I've even had to go to Bing to read some news articles that are now banned or barred to Google users.

  126. Google is starting to get like MSN and all the rest.
No more simple clean home page that we all loved.
It starts with simple add ons , then the black line, now the blue line Ads all over the home page not far in the future

  130. I f**king hate all those extra bars...any bars.
    I want simplicity.

Blank Screen search - (o.k cute little changing logo ) but nothing else

    WTF Google...

Im not the type to usually chime in.

Never thought something would anger me so much

If something doesn't change soon, I am forever changing my home page to something that's not Google

P.S I don't want to have to learn a trick , or get another software to remove what shouldn't be there.

  131. you should do an article on how the internet has become THE ultimate system for tracking and monitoring individuals effectively destroying any concept of privacy without a squeak from the masses.

  134. Marketing is in charge of software now, because of a greed/love for money, even though google is the richest software company THEY HAVE TO HAVE MORE, MORE, MORE, MORE, MORE, MORE, MORE. Marketing being in charge is what ruined WinDoze in 2006 (Windoze F'Ya') and now Google in 2010/2011 with the arrogance of UI-OUR-WAY or the highway and very few or just abstract "options" instead of letting the USER control the layout of the USER interface. It's just plain money-loving arrogance and people need to start getting a clue. It would be EASY for google and the other LARGE software companies to provide FULL UI layout options and retain a classic-look for web products.

  135. It's now 2012. I too hated the black bar, but now it seems to have gotten worse with a big huge thing on the left that doesn't help.

I miss classic and just being able to click the translate link on the right hand side of the search bar. So much easier back then. Now I have to click 'more'. ( One day google had a good idea to put translate on the black bar, but that soon too went to 'more'later on. )

    Black bar...was stupid.
New design with big thing at the left...even stupider.

I wonder if that greasemonkey script still works?

  136. @alexchitu, good lookin out on the black bar! While it certainly doesn't seem to be the most popular aesthetic choice ever made by Google, your post was the first to make me aware of it, so thanks!

Maybe I'm missing something here, but did Google roll this w/out the ability to "revert back" to the classic UI like they typically do? I'm assuming "no", owing to the of level of rancor on this forum.

I understand that it's more than just a black strip, it's a threat to one of the core design principals that attracted so many of you to Google (the whole Einstein "simple as possible but no simpler" thing), but really, these are what Louis C.K. would plainly call

    "white people problems"...

  137. The Black bar effects some banking sites and makes it impossible to enter your password on the special keypad, because where it used to be white with black numbers, it is now black with no numbers, so you have no idea what you are entering. Thanks Google for making something useful now useless!

  138. Just used Explorer to access a bank site because the black bar search makes it impossible to use the secret code pad of this particular bank site, no problem with explorer as google bar on there is white! It only seems to be the crome google bar that is black. Think I'll deleate crome cause it has problems with Adobe reader too, keeps refussing to work, tells me to download then refuses to download Adobe Reader because apparently you dont need it with crome, but crome wont play clips on u tube and other, so it is a real F@*&#NG mess up at crome if you ask me, it's not worth it, thow out crome and use firefox or go back to explorer.

  141. If you haven't already got the "ADBLOCK PLUS" ADD-ON installed for FIREFOX (I'm using Firefox 10) you can download it from here http://adblockplus.org/en/ and after installing it, click as follows TOOLS/ Adblock Plus/ Filter Preferences/Add Filter (over in the right-hand panel). Add these two filters to remove the 'blackbar' ##div#gbx3 and ##div#gbx4 and it's goodbye 'blackbar'. Also, if you have that pesky 'install google chrome' button showing and you want it GONE, add this filter ##div#pmocntr2.pmoabs
