Google is rolling out a feature I mentioned in a previous post: signing in to multiple Google accounts simultaneously from the same browser. When you go to the Google accounts page, you might see a new option: "multiple sign-in". If you don't see the new feature, it will probably be enabled soon.
After clicking on the "change" link, Google informs that this is an advanced feature and that it will only work for Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Sites, Google Reader, Google Voice, App Engine and Google Code. When multiple sign-in is enabled, a drop-down is displayed next to your email address at the top of the page, so you can quickly switch to a new account.
"If you use multiple sign-in, the first account you sign in to will be your default account. If you visit other Google products that don't support multiple accounts after you've signed in, you will automatically sign in to your default account for that product. If you sign out of any Google product while signed in to any account, you will be signed out of all your Google Accounts at once." (Google help center)
When you enable this feature, the most significant change is that you'll see a new drop-down next to your email address in Gmail and other supported Google products. Click on the drop-down and you can sign in to a new Google Account without signing out from the previous account.
Another change is that Google's URLs include a different number for each account: http://mail.google.com/mail/u/0/, http://mail.google.com/mail/u/1/, etc.
Google's help center explains that Google's services didn't allow you to sign it to multiple accounts at the same time using the same browser because Google uses sign-in cookies that only let you sign in with one account at a time. Obviously, you can use multiple browsers, Chrome's incognito mode, IE8's "new session" feature, multiple profiles, but the new Google feature makes things easier. Now you can read your messages from two or more Gmail accounts by opening Gmail in multiple tabs.
There are some known issues related to multiple sign-in: this feature is not available on mobile devices, Google Calendar's gadget doesn't work properly in Gmail, you can no longer use offline Gmail and offline Google Calendar and the "note in Reader" bookmarklet only works for the default account.
{ Thank you, Stefan and Max. }

Is this a trick by Google to catch cheaters using multiple accounts to get some extra storage space? :)
ReplyDeleteOtherwise, why have such restrictions, if anyone may create as many accounts as needed?
Wonderful. I hope Google is the first to introduce this. isn't it?
ReplyDeleteI wonder what implications this may have on personalised search? Maybe only a single account is active at any one time.
ReplyDeleteIt was supposed to work in non-English languages too, but it doesn't. Not yet.
ReplyDeleteI think it is google's plan to catch cheaters who are using extra space using multiple accounts .
ReplyDeleteWhat about Picasa, Reader and such for google Apps? that is what i really want :-D
ReplyDeleteCan we have the link to change the settings?
ReplyDeletenm, I think this is it (and it doesn't work yet): https://www.google.com/accounts/MultipleSessions
ReplyDeleteExcellent. Just the feature I was looking for. I use two Google accounts so now its easier than ever to switch between them.
ReplyDeleteAnonymous, Daljit Singh: No, it's not a scheme to "catch" people doing anything. It's part of the migration system for Google Apps to become more like regular Google Accounts. (Existing Apps account logins can coexist simultaneously, but without this feature, the newer Apps login accounts cannot.)
ReplyDeleteluminoso: As the above says, yes, getting other Google services working with Apps is in active work; there's a beta program in progress now.
On a related note, the mutiple sign-in feature is already working with more than just the five services shown in the settings page. I noticed it implemented for Google Voice a few days ago as well. So it seems this feature is being deployed quickly to as many products as feasible.
I already was able to sign in with my google apps account (user@domain.com) and my regular google account (user@domain.com) simultaneously with the same browser, so how does this help those of use google apps users who have been pestering google to make more features available to google apps?
ReplyDeleteOh, and all, beware of the fact that:
ReplyDelete* multiple sign-in turns off offline Gmail and Calendar. This is because those features are not yet implemented to be compatible with the multiple sign-in URL protocol. If offline Gmail is important to you, DO NOT enable this option at this time.
* when you sign in to a secondary account, that account will also be set for multiple sign-in automatically (though Google does pop up a warning page noting this fact before doing so).
I don't think it's about catching "cheaters", as much as it's about allowing people w/ more than one account to access their data in the same browser.
ReplyDeleteI don't think it's as nefarious as people would like it to be.
I'm hoping this works for google hosted domains, too :D
NG: In order to make more products available to Apps, the easier path is to make Apps accounts into standard Google Accounts, using the same login/authentication system and same cookies. Since the separated cookies will no longer exist after the transition, a different multiple sign-in mechanism is needed.
ReplyDeleteGlad to see Alex is using LastPass! :o)
ReplyDeletewow Excellent from this features
ReplyDeletethanks google
Still no way of changing your default email address AWAY from Gmail once you've accidentally set it as that! Very annoying and arrogant of Google to think that once you've switched to Gmail, you'd never want to use anything else.
ReplyDeleteI assume that this is related to the solution that Google has decided upon for allowed Apps accounts to use non-Apps services.
ReplyDeleteI think this gives us a taste of the extra complexity that will come from their chosen approach. This is going to be a disaster.
@NickG:
ReplyDeleteDelete your Gmail account and you can use any other email address. I think it's a terrible idea to delete a Gmail account (you'll never be able to get it back, you'll lose all your messages), but if you want to do that, you can remove it.
No option for multiple sign up on any of my 3 google powered accounts. The link https://www.google.com/accounts/MultipleSessions says that the page cannot be found.
ReplyDeleteAnother way for Google to track and monitor everything we do.
ReplyDeleteBrilliant - I have three very small businesses and one that uses Google Apps (Premium) Yippee.
ReplyDeleteI also have another GMail account for managing adWords - This is great and hopefully stop cheats too
David
This feature is already available with windows live accounts, you can sign into one mail id and just next to your name on right top corner, you can click the dropdown to enter into another live acct....without the need to signin or signout from current acct....In all, its a copy from microsoft.
ReplyDeleteI hope we can eventually send mail as any of our gmail adresses from your main google account. (without the main email showing up anywhere)
ReplyDeleteThis still isn't as useful as it would be to merge multiple gmail accounts (ie: my personal gmail, and my company gmail)...I understand that this would be complex, but I hope that they can figure out how to do exactly that.
ReplyDelete@EvanK,
ReplyDeleteIf you want to merge your gmail accounts, why not configure one of your Gmail accounts to pull the emails from the other one using POP3 or IMAP?
Catch cheaters? LOL It's a good thing Google isn't as dumb as you are...
ReplyDeleteMany persons have more than one google account, because they are before gmail.
ReplyDeleteProbably many people still want a merge feature.
This will be better than the multiple login for some services....
Actually I have an old google account with my orkut and current account with gmail and I can't merge them.
Cool now Google will know our hidden identities!
ReplyDeleteSo does this mean the TOS has been changed so that you now allow a single person to have more than one Gmail account? Can you clarify please?
ReplyDeleteNote I'm asking about what's allowed by the TOS, not what's possible.
BTW I know Google accounts are not the same as Gmail accounts, but the question about the TOS stands.
ReplyDeleteDoes anyone know the implementation details on the Google side? Just curious :)
ReplyDelete@NG - Google Apps Account and Google Account are two different identities. The mixing of them has been possible since day one.
Google's terms of service has never forbidden users from creating more than one Gmail / Google account for a legitimate use. You're not allowed to create multiple Gmail accounts to send spam.
ReplyDeleteDoes Picasa off-line application supports multiple-sign-in?
ReplyDeleteGoogle is not the first web behemoth to implement this. Microsoft/Hotmail supported "linked accounts" for a couple of years now...
ReplyDeleteIf you have multiple Windows Live account, you can link your IDs from this page:
ReplyDeletehttps://account.live.com/ManageLinks.aspx
From Gmail's program policies:
ReplyDelete"[Users may not] create multiple user accounts in connection with any violation of the Agreement or create user accounts by automated means or under false or fraudulent pretenses."
That means you're not allowed to create multiple accounts to send spam, to send "unlawful, defamatory, harassing, abusive, fraudulent, infringing, obscene, or otherwise objectionable content", to send "viruses, worms, defects, Trojan horses, corrupted files" intentionally, to impersonate another person etc.
This is so cool! I can't wait for this, especially with my two Google voice accounts!
ReplyDeleteThat's arbitrary. Surely Picasa and Youtube should have been top of the list.
ReplyDelete@John:
ReplyDeleteMaybe there are technical problems. Google Docs is the next service that will add support for multiple sign-in.
I was really hoping I could be logged in to my email and second youtube account (not the one thats linked to my main email).
ReplyDeleteHopefully this feature will be available for youtube soon! :D
Otherwise, this is great!
@ Alex K "Cool now Google will know our hidden identities!" - lool do you use different ip's for each identity?
ReplyDeleteJust curious, is the drop down menu supposed to appear on the main google website? Only site the drop down menu for changing identities appears is Gmail.
ReplyDeletefor information, multiple sign-in was already available for google apps account since 3 weeks.
ReplyDeleteGmail and Calendar have already had support for this for years.
ReplyDeleteFrom Gmail, you can link several Gmail accounts so that you can send mail from any of them while signed into only one. In order to receive mail, you have to set fowarding on that account, but you can also set preferences so that replying to an email forwarded from that account will automatically reply from the one it was originally sent to. (Under Gmail Settings, look at the "Accounts and Import" tab.
Similarly, using sharing permissions on calendar allow you to access and modify several accounts from your own calendar. I use both these features to manage multiple emails and calendars (I use the calendar one as a sort of filter between my different types of activities).
Not sure how this will work for things like Voice and Sites. Reader will probably be pretty straightforward though.
It is actually a very useful thing given that some corporations are now using gmail as a corporate replacement for outlook servers. Now I have both a corporate gmail as well as a personal one.
ReplyDeleteanyone else not getting the option to set up "multiple sign-in" under personal settings? :(
ReplyDeleteHere is a screenshot of what my settings look like.
http://tinyurl.com/2g23fhj
John: Both YouTube and Picasa are more complex as they were integrated to Google Accounts _after_ being created. They are being made more uniform (legacy YouTube accounts are going away in the near future), and that's probably a prerequisite for enabling multiple sign-in for them.
ReplyDeleteAlex Chitu: Multiple sign-in works for Docs for enabled accounts as of this writing. I hadn't even noticed that Docs wasn't on the list in that screenshot.
(Most): This feature is, AFAIK, only offered for accounts that are currently part of the Google Apps to Google Accounts transition beta test program -- and regular accounts that have been logged in at least once via this multiple sign-in feature. It's possible that the feature is being rolled out to a subset of non-Apps accounts on a limited basis, but expect an announcement on one or more of the official Google blogs before it goes to wide deployment.
Don't worry, it's coming, and I can be pretty certain that this feature will be available to all by the end of the year (likely earlier).
Thanks so much for sharing! Many of the websites reporting on this feature do not mention that small (but very important) bit of info.
ReplyDeleteThis is awesome, I always have my email from diff google accounts open in diferent browser windos... this solves that problem!
ReplyDeleteAt my work, accounts are shared across the company for some things like adwords (it's a small company). Are there limits on the number of people that can have an account as one of "theirs"?
ReplyDeleteI can't see these options on my account page. Is it not available for everyone. I have two gmail account and wanna merge them.
ReplyDeleteca c'est vraiment super !
ReplyDeleteI have activated multiple sign-in but whenever I sign-out and sign-in again, only my default account is displayed. I have to sign in the second account again. Is there some way to fix this. As in once signed in the second account, it remains there?
ReplyDeletelooking forward to this hitting my account soon. c'mon google. :)
ReplyDeleteBrilliant. Will be even better when they add Adsense.
ReplyDeleteAccording to me its a very catchy features...but i have not seen yet...
ReplyDeleteGreat ! Now, if they only can made opt-out the conversation view...
ReplyDeletedun understand why there's a need for multiple account log-ins ???
ReplyDeleteGenious! I've been waiting this function for ages! Hope it will be available in Brazil soon! :)
ReplyDeleteNice, just what I needed. Few days ago I was working on Google Docs and by mistake logged out from my personal account. Long story short, the form wasn't saved :(
ReplyDeleteThanks,
Emil
Works nice with "@gmail" accounts only. But not for gmail under google apps domain ;-(
ReplyDeleteHope it will be there ;-)
I'm waiting for the next innovation based on this.
ReplyDeleteit will only work for Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Sites, Google Reader, Google Voice, App Engine and Google Code.
ReplyDeleteThat means it won't work with Google's personalized search results. :-)
Does anyone outside the US have this feature on his Google Accounts Page ?
ReplyDeleteYup got this active today (I am in Peru)
ReplyDeleteI was only allowed multiple sign on with a default plus two other accounts - a third was refused and it required a separate login. Returning to the default account i found I had to re-enable accounts 2 and 3. A bit of a waste of time. since I use FireFox I'll stick with the Gmail manager addon which just requires me to sign off before logging on to a different account. So, why the three account limit?
ReplyDeletehey there Google support, just wandering if i can add my other gmail accounts which i created after i changed my surname? Tried doing this but wizard thinks those accounts are not associated to me. For the record, i got married hence the change of name and i still uses my old account as well...
ReplyDeleteAwesome way of managing your business accounts.
ReplyDeleteVery good, but it would be better if, when you sign in the main account, you were signed in automatically in the other accounts. I use gmail manager for firefox and with a click I sign in my account, but to make use of this functionality, I have to write down the rest of the uses/psswords.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, many thanks,
But there is a low tech solution. Just buy an array of old Mac Books and hook them up to your home wireless network. Take a postit and put the name under which you have logged in onto the Mac Book. Then line up the Mac Books on your plastic, $50 dollar tabletop. If you set up your chair right, you should be able to swivel to any of your laptops in a moment. This allows you to post on multiple blogs, make comments and assume more aliases than Benjamin Franklin ever dreamed of. Good luck.
ReplyDeleteI would like to try but I can't see "Multiple sign-in" becuase mine is Chinese verson. How can I change to English verson? Need your support.
ReplyDeleteFinally, great!
ReplyDeleteLooking forward to this rolling out with all features...
ReplyDeleteWhat about multiple users on a Feedburner account? Please?
There is NO option in my Google account page.
ReplyDeleteAnd what about Google Apps account too?
10x
Great ! Excellent from this features
ReplyDeleteThanks
can i operate two accounts at the same time
ReplyDeleteI have 1 main gmail account. But several youtube accounts I signe up with this email, how can I link multiple youtube accounts to 1 gmail account?
ReplyDeleteI use Google for my domain. I have one main email address and one catch all email that I use when I buy stuff, sign up for newsletters, etc. Is it possible to log in to both of them simultaneously?
ReplyDeleteSo it would be ME@mydomain.com and SPAM@mydomain.com at the same time.
How can I change my default account?
ReplyDeleteI've a few gmail accounts , this is handy but i wish they'd turn off the phone verification thing
ReplyDeleteThanks google. But you are only talking about sign-in feature only. What about sign-out?.If i am signing out from another account,It is completely singing out from default account also.
ReplyDeleteCan u provide the sign off facility to other session also....
I wish they would add this function to blogger as well
ReplyDeleteYesterday I reset my passwords on both of my Gmail accounts. I made no other changes. Today, when I click the spaces on Gmail's Sign In, it no longer displays either of my 2 accounts. I have re-entered them multiple times, but they do not stay listed there. Of course, I can manually login to either of them, but it used to be that I could click in the field, see the 2 accounts displayed (alphabetically), and click on it to login. The Autocomplete is still set to remember passords & ID. I have cleared the cache, rebooted, etc. I use WinXP with IE8, SP3, and MS Security Essentials.
ReplyDeletePlease add it to YouTube.
ReplyDeleteThis was a great change for me.
ReplyDeleteI am currently using dífferent browsers because of this.
Anyone seeing this work under their own domain with Google Apps, the free version? Currently I don't have the option.
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely terrible idea/implementation.
ReplyDeleteI help administer Google Apps accounts for a dozen or so non-profits/small businesses and could previously be signed into my Gmail account and any number of Google Apps accounts all at the same time. This is a nightmare. Now I'm going to have to jump through hoops all the time because of conflicting sign-in issues.
Now if Google gave the ability to manage multiple Google Apps accounts from one login then it wouldn't be so bad, but I just don't see the benefit or reasoning behind merging things that are meant to be separate anyway. If they really have to merge the sign-on backends they could have at least created some token that would allow for the same functionality as before.
Why is there a 3 maximum multiple account limit?? Gmail says:
ReplyDelete"You are already signed in to the maximum number of accounts. . ."
I have these:
- One for my google apps domain - personal email
- Google apps domain - admin account
- Another google apps domain
- Normal Gmail account
Now I have to sign out of one account to use another. What an annoying limitation!
Not working for my Apps account, YouTube account, and Google Voice Account, all which have to be separate... and I wish I could join them all to one. Pisses me off.
ReplyDeleteI want to be able to sign in to one account for Gmail and Reader, and another account for picasaweb, and another for google apps family email and calendar.
ReplyDeleteThank you. It seems to be working.
ReplyDeleteJust found this. Excellent. I'm so frustrated with constantly having to log in. I hope it will work with Youtube as well at some point.
ReplyDeleteWow, just discovered the 3 signin limit. What a waste, this could have been a good feature. I have 3 domain names I have to manage, and this was going to be great. Unfortunately, gmail + 3 domain emails is 4 accounts. Too much for creaky 'ol google.
ReplyDeleteC'mon Google, don't screw with us like this.
I'm frustrated with the 3 signin limit as well. It feels very arbitrary. I manage four domains plus my gmail account. After converting the 3rd domain I discovered this bug and fortunately have not converted my 4th domain... I can now no longer log into the 3rd without logging out of *everything* first.
ReplyDeleteI'm also annoyed by the max-three limit. I hope they remove it soon. In the mean time, I'll use Chromes Incognito window, in which I have have 1 further signin. Too bad i can't even have one separate login in each incognito window.
ReplyDeleteI'm not certain that the reason I wish to merge Google accounts is common but I expect it is. In my case I created a YouTube account, back in the day, unrelated to any email functionality; I recently have created a GMail account and I do not wish to "operate" two accounts with this one company (much less three or more). I want all my "old" YouTube saved videos and so forth kept together with my new GMail "experience". [Disclosure: I am a regular MacBook Pro OS 10.6.5 user & Droid X newbie in the midst of migrating a couple thousand Palm-Desktop contacts & a few gigs of Entourage 2008 emails to the "modern" Google world having a partially successful entirely overly complicated experience.]
ReplyDeleteHas anyone noticed that with this feature, it is now possible to sign into Blogger with multiple gmail accounts? This is worrisome for a variety of reasons, privacy and hacking notwithstanding.
ReplyDeleteThis is a solution for a lot of my problems! I'm afraid it has been posted in august & I found it today. Thanks a lot
ReplyDeleteNothing exciting for me I have only one Gmail account, but it will be great if we are allowed to access our different network ID's from one network
ReplyDeleteThey REALLY need to enable this for Blogger.
ReplyDeleteIs the multiple sign in feature going to be extended to Blogger anytime soon?
ReplyDeletethis looks great , because now I can use different accounts ,kool.
ReplyDeleteYou really need to update this feature so it does not have the 3 max limit and that it works across all the features. If you want to truly showcase that your company is the forefront of web applications (especially with Chrome OS just around the corner) these sort of limitations just don't make sense. You're clever guys, please sort this out so I can enjoy your services.
ReplyDeleteWhen i log-on in two different account it works fine. But if i want to log-out one account the other is automatically loged out. Is there any solution...
ReplyDeleteI was having trouble accessing these settings through a google apps for education account (uses SSO for authentication). Is there another way to turn it on, or is there a help page about how to access this settings page via google apps for edu?
ReplyDeleteHow come it doesn't work for google apps. For example my college just went over to google and I can't link the two accounts. Also I have a separate domain name with google that too can not connect. Am I doing something wrong or does google Really need to change these things
ReplyDeleteI'm with everybody here--3 account limit really sucks.
ReplyDeletePlease make it 10 max, or 5 at the very least.
ReplyDeleteOne more vote for upping the limit of accounts. Please!
ReplyDeletesee the firefox add-on cookiepie
ReplyDeletethen not just with google, also facebook and whatever
Please, increase the limit! 3 is too low.
ReplyDeleteSMH @ how many posters think this is an official Google blog.
ReplyDeleteLimit of 3 is dumb, won't even be trying this as I need to manage 6 or so.
Thank you so much for the post. I was looking for something like this when Google aps and Gmail kind of merged and started using single sessions.
ReplyDeleteGreetings from India.
With the google apps merge everything sucks now.Now I can't have two emails up at one in the same browser. Does anyone test this stuff?
ReplyDeleteI agree as well, I manage 3 domains and have a primary email account as well. This goes over the 3 account limit which is quite annoying. Oh well, I'll use the temporary work around of the signing in on the incognito window... but really google? Why limited to 3? From a programming standpoint, I don't see any significant reason as to why it can't be increased.
ReplyDeleteIt probably isn't a limit from a programming standpoint. They probably just don't want to encourage people to create too many different accounts.
ReplyDeleteThey probably figured one would be your personal Gmail account... another would be a Google Apps account through your work... and then they made an extra one available just in case... maybe a Google Apps account for your own business?
Maybe they are considering it a lower priority to support those who are corner cases... who might run multiple side businesses, each with their own domain name... and, thus, distinct Google Apps accounts. For programmers, it is also not uncommon to have an extra Gmail account to use for testing purposes.
I think 5 would be ideal. 10 would be superb and definitely more than enough. 3 is just too restricting for power users.
WHAT I MEANT IS LIKE WHAT CAN YOU SIGN INTO USING YOUR GOOGLE ID THING!!! LIKE YOU DON'T HAVE TO CREATE AN ACCOUNT, YOU JUST SIGN IN AND EVERYTHING IS THERE!!!! :)
ReplyDeletelimit of maximum sign in 3 is not good. It should be increased.
ReplyDeleteIt appears it has being increased - it's at least 5 accounts now ;-)
ReplyDeleteYouTube support request
ReplyDeleteGoogle says you can't create more than one account, then they permanently link my Youtube account to my Gmail and the only way to sign into Youtube now is to use a Google account. So, they tell me to make a new account. So now, whenever I sign in to Gmail, Youtube automatically logs me in to the wrong Youtube account. I am becoming increasingly annoyed with Google and their shoddy programming/policies.
ReplyDeleteThey REALLY need to enable this for Blogger.
ReplyDeleteI signed up for a business gmail account, and now my youtube and blog are linked to that email address--something I do NOT want. So now I'm trying to figure out how to unlink without losing my blog. Fed up with google--want to exit gmail completely even though I just had new business cards printed.
ReplyDeleteIt sucks. I loose precious time with this feature that is supposed to save me some time. Grrr. Come on Google, you were used to make things so simple and fast in the past, why don't you continue?
ReplyDeleteWell, it works for me. I have a couple gmail accounts that I use for a couple of eBay accounts. I like to be able to check both without having to sign in and out. Some of the limitations aren't an issue for me as this isn't my main email account.
ReplyDeleteSo I'm not sure I'd use this feature for my main email account, but for eBay, shopping, etc accounts - it's nice to have.
this is a great feature. I have my personal gmail account and my work gdoc account on different addresses. :) Thanks, Google!
ReplyDeleteThis will be a great feature after always having to use three different browsers to work back and forth simultaneously.
ReplyDeleteWhat a clunky feature.
ReplyDeleteUp until 24 hours ago, I was able to have multiple Google Apps Mail sessions open in their own tabs. This is far superior than a "switch user" hack, even if the latter did work properly (which it doesn't seem to).
Now the service has been "upgraded" and the this no longer works.
Being able to run multiple logins in separate tabs is far superior to a fiddly "switch user" hack, even if the latter did work properly (which it doesn't seem to).
A HUGE step backwards in functionality.
I agree completely with Russel and the anonymous poster, who predicted that Google's decision to merge Google Apps IDM into overall Google Account IDM would be a disaster. It could have worked if their "multi sign-in regime" had supported more apps than just Mail, Calendar and Reader. But somehow they slept through a year without adding multi-signin support for any apps despite Todd Vierling himself predicting that support for more apps would come before the end of 2010.
ReplyDeleteI'm currently looking into switching my private e-mail, calendar and docs to a competitor such as Zoho or something privately hosted as I absolutely cannot be bothered with having to sign out of my private Google Account to view documents in the company account and vice versa.
STUPID MOVE, Google.
I agree with Russell and Anonymous. It was nice to be able to separate my work email (hosted by Google) and my personal gmail on separate tabs. Now I have to log into each one to check them.... FAIL.
ReplyDeleteDoesn't Google know that we want to keep personal email and work email separate.....
This doesnt seem to be working any more?
ReplyDeleteI've got a few different accounts and this would have made life a lot easier. If this doesnt work, does anybody know if you can import AdWords/AdSense/Analytics etc from one account to the other?
It does work, but only for a small number of services (Gmail, Calendar, Reader, Voice). You can't use multiple sign-in for Adsense, Adwords, Analytics and you can't transfer your data to a different account. In Analytics you can give admin permission to a different account, which is almost like transfering your data to that account. The same goes for Adwords: http://adwords.google.com/support/aw/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=44500 It's important to keep in mind that you're not allowed to have more than one Adsense account.
ReplyDeleteMulti-User Accounts are for users like me. Who are are using gmail and Google Apps Account. Now gmail and my official accounts both can be accessed on the same time.
ReplyDeleteAs there are many services like youtube, Picassa and others which are not available to Apps Accounts. It helps
I really love this fucntion, especially after the latest gmail update with plus integration. It keeps my normal business profile available when doing personal stuff, there are still minor improvements to be made but this is one of the things i like about the google system.
ReplyDeleteIt's annoying for mobile. I use google reader a lot on my mobile, so when signed into my google apps account, I can't access my person reader account without manually signing out, then typing my password and signing in again...
ReplyDeleteWhat happens if i'm using a google account managed by my company? Is is still applicable?
ReplyDelete@Russel and @annonymous: you can use the personal and work accounts next to each other the old way you are used to. Just split the personal account to different browser, e.g. use Firefox for working accounts and Chrome for private stuff. I know it's not like switching two tabs in single window but I also understand why google decided to do it this way (and many people would agree with me I guess). It's a workaround but it's quite easy and almost seamless.
ReplyDeleteWhat I don't understand is how to log off one account only. Usually when I'm signed to my accounts and my wife is too lazy to turn on her own computer, she logs as one additional account to mine. When she's leaving and uses Log off, it logs out all my accounts. This is quite annoying especially with regard to the second option you have there for logging off all accounts. Well both do the same thing for me and I don't see any reason why.
I used to have all my Google services using my personal email address and in late June, Google insisted that I "migrate" (separate my accounts) which now means I *must* logout of my gmail if I want to use Google+ or Youtube, and vice versa.
ReplyDeleteThis is seriously inconvenient, despite both accounts being set to 'allow multiple sign-ins'. So if a friend wants to Googlechat with me, I have to logout to check my email.
What is more disappointing is that I had a paid account with Google, and still Google refused to assist me. I'm going back to using Vimeo and Facebook. I'm seriously frustrated with Google.
Most of these merges of ID dont work out. Its not a good way to go and hopefully Google realises this!
ReplyDeleteOf course, this wouldn't work with YouTube, because that is the one thing I'd actually need this for.
ReplyDeleteDoesn't it sort of seem pointless to have multiple accounts if google will recognize them all as the same person?
ReplyDeletenot work for me :(
ReplyDeleteWill this be rolled out for other google products? Though it makes managing email accounts, it's a pain for youtube and blogger.
ReplyDeleteNear the top of the comments thread Abarajithan asked if google was the first to do this.
ReplyDeleteNO, AOL did this several years ago.
So...great. Only it doesn't work, even on Google's main page. I sign in as my main account, and I have properly linked my other account to it. I can click on the drop down menu, click on the other name, and voila, it says I'm on account number 2! But wait, am I really?!
ReplyDeleteANYWHERE I go, including just reloading Google itself, returns me to my "default account." If I go ANYWHERE and return to Google, I am AGAIN on account number 1. I can run a search as account number 2, but the minute I click any link, I'm back to my first account. This includes Google's main page.
I know this is supposed to work only on certain Google pages, and those pages are the very ones that it does not work on! It constantly defaults back to my first account. Is there some setting I haven't fiddled with yet, like a "actually use the feature you wanted to use" or a "Oh, wait, you were serious?" button?
This would be really good if it actually work. I have 3 accounts I use a personal gmail account and two business google apps accounts but I am constantly getting logged off
ReplyDeleteThis would be great if it actually worked as advertised. I have 3 accounts two google apps business accounts and a personal gmail account. I can log in with all 3 and it works for about 5 minutes then it logs me out of all 2
ReplyDeleteFor me it does not work with one parent Gmail account + one child Google Apps account - it does not save the l/p of the child account.
ReplyDeleteMultiple sign-in are enabled on both accounts.
What is the problem?
Most of these merges of ID dont work out. Its not a good way to go and hopefully Google realises this!
ReplyDeleteHow do we change the default of these multiple accounts? Say the current default is a@gmail.com - but I wish to set b@gmail.com as the default first account. Which is the setting option for this? Thanks!
ReplyDeleteHow do you disable this after enabling? I need to hand over the second account to someone else, and I need to unlink it from my personal email account.
ReplyDelete@bottleHeD, did you find a solution. I also had my late father's hotmail account linked to mine, but now he has passed away, but I can't unlink his account which has been closed anyway. Every time I logout of gmail, the dropdown gives me a choice of switching to his now defunct account.
Deletei know my friend's passward and while he was logged in, i tried to login as well from a different city. however i was typing the correct passward and id, i could not login. i want to know that is their any way via which my friend could have intentionally restricted me from logging in without changing his passward though?if yes, how to recover the date and time when he did so, exactly like it happens when passward is changed (it gets displayed in the login page by entering the wrong passward that how many days back the passward was changed)? address me a vidhu so that its easy for me to find my answer amongst all the other posts
ReplyDeletethanks to this blog really this is nice blog but in future we can get some good experience from this link Gmail support
