I've changed to US (from UK) and there is still no change. Hey, at least there's the navigation bar along the top as opposed to a small blue box...
Your quote:
"A Gmail API would be a much better idea for the future, because every change in Gmail's code can break a plug-in"
If you read the comment at http://productivefirefox.com/2007/11/03/gtdinbox-v2-screams-from-the-engine-room/
"not even we’d like to contemplate having to tackle Gmail’s new codebase from the outside… it’s far more complex than it ever was"
a Gmail api doesnt' seem to be likely for this version...
(Luckily the ?ui=1 bookmark solution worked for me to keep the GTDInbox plugin working...)
@Pascal:
That's a really bad news, but I can't believe they didn't think about an API when they built the new version. And even if Gmail's code is complex, that doesn't mean an API could not be built. Hoes does the mobile Gmail app communicate with Google's servers?
Pascal said on November 5, 2007 5:20 AM PDT:
I think just in 2 or 3 month the first Addons or Greasemonkey Scripts will wok with new Gmail. If you compare the old and the new code, there are many changes.
I have a link called 'Older Version' in the top right corner of my Gmail page.
That said, I don't mind the newer version at all, but people who have too many messages in their inbox might see some lag during the prefetch.

now i know why my gmail doesnt appear in the new version. i use uk english.
Safari uses the new version by default.
There are still a couple bugs, like the fact that it doesn't autofill email addresses anymore.
I find it much faster, and if it fixes the issue of not being able to use the Back button, then I am in heaven!

I like the new contacts look. I like the look of Gmail Docs. I wish the whole look including the home page/inbox was like that. For a "new" Gmail 2.0 , I think it is really lame. Gmail needs a new appearance, it still looks like something from the 1980's.

I do not like the new version. In fact, I specifically chose the older version which let me totally disable chatting.
The change in widgets seems to have been done for no reason. There was nothing wrong with the older version. There are several other deficiencies that cause me to click the "Older Version" link every time I check my mail.
I would like to see the older version (or at least an exact copy of the interface and behaviour) left as a configurable option.

I really don't like that it's being forced on us before it's ready. Yes I can switch back, but I have to do it every single time I launch and that's annoying. Second, I really hate google chat within gmail. I use the separate client for chat and I really hate that now, when I launch gmail, it broadcasts that I'm available when I don't want to be.

I would like to make another suggestion to those who would prefer to use the older version of Gmail. After finding that some would rather use this older version, I decided to write a Greasemonkey script that redirects the user to this version after logging into Gmail. If you are using Firefox and have the Greasemonkey extension installed on it, then I would suggest giving this script a try. If you would like to use it,
it can be found here. And if you would like to

I HATE the new version of gmail. I am still able to click on the link for the old version but am afraid that soon that option will be over. I have tried both bookmarking and changing to the language to English UK but nothing stops the new version from loading. I used to LOVE gmail. It was simple, organized beautifully and I loved being able to label everything.....now I have that stupid chat box that I never used. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrr. I just don't understand why Google had to go mess with a perfect email system. I don't want all this new junk with gmail....just good old (version) gmail! I don't see why we can't have some sort of default button to use. I'm afraid the only thing Google is going to notice is when we all go elsewhere for our emailing needs.

The new version of Gmail sucks. I don't want the chat feature and am tired of watching it try and load while I hit the link for the old version. I have tried bookmarking and also the changing the language to English (UK). Nothing works! It still loads as the new version with all of that junk and clutter that is annoying. What has happened at Google is what I would love to know? I used to really admire the company as a whole. The new version is just junk and eventually there will be no link to the old version. I am really upset since I loved just the labels alone. It was great to have them...and I used them as a really easy file system. Now that chat feature loads where labels used to be displayed. I have tried to get used to the new version. It's slow and it's cluttered. It's everything I never expected from Google, actually. I will miss old Gmail but I won't be sticking around with the new version. Its an insult to those of us who have stuck with Google all these years. I just expected more from them since they did have the very best product out there. Not anymore. So long Google Junk. That's my new name for the company that brought me "the new version" out of nowhere and for no good reason. There are other junkie email programs and that's where I guess I will be going since I won't support Google and it's new direction.

I just hate the new version for all the same reasons I am reading here from everyone else.
When my link to the old version is gone so am I.
I just expected so much more from you as a company. I will lose respect for you...not that it matters much to a corporation. The only thing that may get your attention is when I and many other "old" users vanish. You had such a great product....award winning. Its a shame that you had to clutter it up with a chat feature I don't want and all the other junk that was never what your users really wanted....if they did...they would be at AOL or Yahoo.

I have broadband Internet access, and still Gmail's newer version is way too slow! I've been fighting it for a couple of weeks. Today I tried clicking on "Older Version" after I logged in and suddenly Gmail was MUCH faster! Has anyone else had trouble with the newer version being too slow?
So far I've *lost* three email messages I was composing with the new version. I've had to restart Firefox I don't know how many times: the new version makes it hang in certain circumstances.
I try to always use the Older Version or the Basic HTML Version, but sometimes I forget, and get bitten. I hope they fix this some day soon.
I'd think this is a big embarrassment for Google. I'm surprised it isn't more in the news. Maybe it only affects Firefox users? With certain extensions? It can't be that rare, because my parents spontaneously complained about it too.

i use a script called Gmail - Dark, which worked fine until my Gmail Notifier add-on for Firefox started logging me on the new version of Gmail. This messed up the whole dark look of Gmail, so everytime I have to hit new version at the top. I guess I am just lazy, but the only thing that seems to work is he English (U.K.) setting. I tried the Gmail redirect script and there was no such luck.

The new version of Gmail is broken and won't load for dial up at all, it brings in tons more spam, I think they sold out to some evil plan. Yes you can click the old version at the top right but next visit it is back to not loading on the new version.
It is too bad they didn't learn from mistakes that MSN made long ago, when you have something that works and everyone wants it, don't change it. just fix any bugs reported by the people that are making you popular, don't become smug and conceited and start forcing malware on everyone.

My problem is similar to one another blogger mentioned. Why should everyone on my friend list have the privilege of knowing that I'm online just because I want to check my email? Now, I spend five to ten minutes being evasive to people that "shout me out" as soon as I get online. I loved gmail from the inception. I'm not the type to change over easily, but gmail made me feel comfortable enough to do it without a second thought. If the "Older Version" button goes, my race to click that link before someone notices I'm online is over and I will feel as if my privacy is compromised......unless there's a way to make myself invisible to everyone when I sign on to gmail. Is there a way?
I have had no difficulty with the script that redirects the user to the older version of Gmail that I previously mentioned. However, I will see if I can find out why it may not be working for you, Ch@pm@n. Is anyone else having any difficulty with it?

Gmail NEEDS a setting to choose old or new style PERMANENTLY! It's NOT as big of a deal as they are letting on. Sheesh! Why they had to go and screw up a good thing is beyond me!
Javert03 said on December 3, 2007 12:47 PM PDT:
I agree. Gmail needs an option to permanently use the old version. I had gotten pretty used to the new version, but just saw the old version link today and tried it out. Wow! I didn't realize how much faster the old version really was! I also
much prefer the old contacts page. It was just so simple, so straightforward, and so...well...Google.
My other email providers, AOL and Yahoo!, have created new and improved interfaces, probably in an attempt to compete with Gmail, and they stink! They're sooooo slow and bloated. I thought Google would never do it, but now they're moving in the same direction. What now?
Gmail stopped working entirely on Firefox 3 Beta 1, which is otherwise pretty good and much faster.
Can't really blame them too much for that, as it's brand new, but i thought I'd let people know, because it took me a while to figure it out.

New version's lack of e-mail address autofill feature is a royal pain. Also, I too do not want the chat crap clutter. If I cannot get the old version permanently back I am leaving Google Mail and (believe it or not) returning to aol. The missing autofill thing is my major beef.

For anyone who hasn't seen the new version, consider yourself lucky. Enjoy the fast, no-nonsense version while you can... soon you'll be waiting 20+ seconds to check your mail, and the only extra feature I've noticed is if you accidentally hover your mouse over someone's name, a big ugly popup shows up saying their name, and no other useful information at all, obscuring the subject line you were reading.
On another note, does anyone know a way to spoof your UserAgent string just for a specific site?

It's now Dec. 27, and gmail still hangs up on Firefox. What is particularly annoying is the arrogance of these people. By the way, the service is not free. You pay for it by buying the thousands of products that advertise through Google. Back to the arrogance: there is no obvious link to reach an actual gmail employee to register a complaint and get an answer.
Jack said on December 27, 2007 10:24 AM PDT:
Yes, not being able to actually speak with a gmail representative is most annoying. When I was with aol it was never difficult to access help and for that reason I will be returning to aol with the new year. I see some of you are actually waiting to get the new version. How can it not be universal? Why wasn't I given a choice? Arrogant indeed to foist something on me that I do not want.
@Hot-t:
<< By the way, the service is not free. You pay for it by buying the thousands of products that advertise through Google. >>
The service is free because you pay $0. Nobody forces you to click on the ads and they're not as intrusive as the banners from Yahoo Mail or Hotmail. You might even find links to useful services.
@Jack:
<< Yes, not being able to actually speak with a gmail representative is most annoying. >>
Imagine that 10,000 Gmail users send an email every day to Google's support team. How many employees would Google need to answer to each of the messages in a timely manner? Google automates the process and only answers to some of the messages. If you receive an automated response, reply with more details and Google might answer you.
<< I see some of you are actually waiting to get the new version. How can it not be universal? Why wasn't I given a choice? >>
They're still testing it by enabling the new version only for some of the accounts. You're not missing too many features anyway (colored labels, AIM integration, updated contact manager) and the old version is still faster and more stable.
Allow me to add to the HATRED of the new Gmail. The user should have more choices and setting options not less. It's just common...er...uncommon sense. BTW, thanks so much for this page. The 'english UK' thing was exactly what I was looking for. Will this fix last? Are they going to 'F' it up too? I sure hope not. If so I am dumping Gmail. Cheers, stinki
The only issue I have with the new version is that it doesn't autofill with Safari. For that reason, I am using the UK version until they get that all worked out.

I've been watching my older PCs at home fight a losing battle with GMail, all the time thinking IE had bee compromised. In fact She Who Must Be Obeyed blamed a relative for sending a "virus that broke GMail" which I dismissed as ridiculous, given the extensive security software we run.
Who'd have thought Google broke their own GMail??
And here I am at work, two PCs trying to figure why GMail takes a minute to load, then discovering the "Old Version" - then finding the switch ain't permanent .. what's the bloody point of that??
So, it's Google's little gnomes, hammering away in the bowels of the G-plex, trying to make a dollar from all the greedy souls who've been soaking up the apparently-free bandwidth.
Well, from me it's "So Long GMail, it was great knowing you."

Only now I discovered the older version is still available, but of course you have to be able to load the new interface to be able switch to the old one! And when loading, either my browser crashes or I get numerous "unresponsive script" warnings, so it takes forever to even load the new version. Gah.

I'm glad I found this thread and that I'm not the only one. I HATE the new gmail and it betrays everything we thought google had learned about what (most) people want: fast, simple, reliable.
I think there's two problems: 1. The devil makes work for idle hands. Developers with nothing to do will ... um, develop. And develop, and develop, until the product collapses; and 2. Google developers will all have super-fast machines with multi-gig memory and fat-pipe, high-speed internet ... unlike a substantial part of their client base. If they end up reading this, they'll be puzzled: "Huh?
Mine loads fast."
I actually stumbed onto this thread when I was searching for an alternative to gmail (using the search terms "gmail" and "bloated" LOL)
The irony is that google search retains the old stripped-down look -- funny how they haven't wrecked that.
As soon as the 'old version' is no longer available, it's "bye bye gmail."

I don't have issues with the speed as some have - I just don't like being told I have to have the new version without the option. Clicking 'older version' every time is a pain. Simple, Google - just give us the choice, that's all. As many others have said - when the old version is no longer available by any means, I'm out of here.

Improvements are one thing, change that appears to be for the sake of change is a very bad idea because humans are creatures of habit. I can accept the changes but I shall never forgive Gmail for doing away with the Google search box that came up on my in tray. That is one change that I did not need and that, I am sure, was not needed by anybody else, except perhaps Google themselves. The big advantage of the Gmail page was that one could go anywhere from it and there was no need to open a new one for anything. It was efficiency carried to the utmost and that efficiency is now lost.
