Yahoo doesn't get it, I tried the new Yahoo Mail beta and is horrible slow, with bloated interface, obstrusive ads, I much prefer GMail which is elegant, simple, fast, and more importantly it does not get in your way.

Trex005 said on April 24, 2006 12:59 AM PDT:
well, I tried UK and no luck... Took me forever to find a valid zip code for the UK too!
To change your content preference, log in to Yahoo Mail, click Options, select Account information from the left panel and then edit Member Information, General Preferences, Preferred Content. Select, for example, Yahoo UK, click Finished. When you go to Yahoo Mail, you'll see a page that says "It's the New Yahoo! Mail Beta... and you're invited." Click on "Try Beta Now".

Worked for me. Just click "Options" on the top right. Then select "Account Information" or something to that effect (my language setting isn't English). Enter your password and then change your "Content Preference" to United Kingdom. Worked like a charm, thanks!
I just got the beta (using this technique, of course), and I'm amazingly underwhelmed. As noted above, the beta is rather sluggish—especially when compared to Gmail.
I was excited about the old beta back in 2002 (what they use now)—it looked great and worked great. This new beta is a load of crap.
Thanks for the tip, though.

I have been a Yahoo email'r since 199something. I tried the beta a couple of months ago when it first came out. Very, very unusable. So slow! I switched back. The announcement last week of a new beta release brought me back in. Still very slow and causes my Firefox to hang continually. Wow, they are going to have to rethink/redo something before this thing comes out of Beta.

The Yahoo Beta email gets much faster after the first use... it has to load all its mojo into your browser.
Been using it since January and it's marvelous.
I much prefer Yahoo Beta to the folderless Gmail structure.

Yahoo Mail beta is slow and buggy. It's a true crapshoot if you're using Firefox. Sometimes it crashes, sometimes it doesn't.
Interface is much more appealing, but it needs a lot of work "under the hood."

i agree that gmail is MUCH faster, but for anyone who enjoys this, you can switch back to Yahoo!US once u have the beta enabled (just a side note)
said on April 24, 2006 7:03 PM PDT:
I couldn't get it to work at first. I haven't been in account information since I had the 6 meg account (before they were issuing 4 meg accounts, that have since all been upped to 1G). There was all kinds of information in there that it said it needed and there was no general preferences section. After changing a whole bunch of things in there and entering and exiting it a couple times it finally showed up and I could change the language preference. Then it worked.
Switched back already though, not worth it.
tonicboy said on April 24, 2006 7:11 PM PDT:
Wow, lots of hate for the new beta. Well, I've been using it for about 4 months now and I like it. I'm a Yahoo! Plus user so I don't get any ads and can't comment on how obtrusive they are, but it's never crashed my browser (Firefox, works great) and the interface is hardly bloated. Ocassionally you will get an error, but retrying your operation will usually do the trick. As for it not being elegant or simple, I guess that's all subjective. I personally feel it is much more elegant than Gmail, looks a DAMN shade better and is as simple as it gets to use. This is a tried and true email app paradigm which has worked for dozens of email clients. Folders on the left, list of messages on the right, preview pane on the bottom right, basic toolbar above the message list. I mean really, is that complicated?
So, really the only problem is that it is in fact slow, but I heard the latest build improves speed considerably - especially after the first time you log on. I don't think that build has been pushed out to my server farm yet so I can't comment. But keep in mind that this is a beta for a reason. It's hardly fair to comment on performance or bugs.

Could it be slow because your mail is now hosted on the other side of the Atlantic ocean? As far as they know, you're now in that other country.
Also, you do realize that you're agreeing to the Terms of Service in another country, right?

I agree with everyone about slowness. Even more to the point is its freakish desire to emulate a basic software email client. I don't want that for my webmail. That's why gmail is brilliant, it's webmail and it's not like an average client (outlook, thunderbird, etc.). Yet I like the current yahoo webmail SPECIFICALLY because it's simple and works on a large variety of browsers, letting me get my mail anywhere. Can't figure out why they've screwed with that, other than the term "AJAX" must have found its way into a CEO's vocab. Yuck.
Great tip. It has worked for me too. However, I feel it is slow.

First, it killed my dear Firefox, it is terribly slow, and it's not simple. I really don't get it. I guess that when you have so many people signed up for your email service you don't really care anymore. It's a shame, they just don't get it. They've had so much time, they could have done wonderful things. I expected them to do something better than Gmail, that's why I opened an account with them if I ever decided to switch ( I used Hotmail, don't even). This is one of the reasons why Google is such an eminent threat.

I am all for the improvement in Yahoo Beta. However, if the speed deteriorates just because of the switch to Beta version, then I find it is not worth it for the moment. The

I assume it will take some time for them to improve their bandwidth, just like

It worked like a charm! I've had yahoo mail forever but have been using gmail almost exclusively these days. However this new Yahoo mail is great! I have been avoiding cleaning up folders and old addresses. It was so easy to clean out everything with the drag and drop and the keyboard option of holding Ctrl to make multiple choices and then delete to watch them all dissappear!! I've only had this beta for less tha 24 hours but so far I have had no problems with speed or with Firefox. I can tell no difference at all. I'm hooked! Now if Yahoo would only give us an up date for calander and allow for outgoing messages to display from another one of your email addresses like Gmail offers! Then there would be no contest!

I used Yahoo mail for a long time, got fed up and switched to gmail about two years ago, and was hooked to gmail since. I tried the beta of Yahoo mail, and even though it had some cool features, the user interface felt clunky, the load speed was slow, and there were all of those obtrusive ads to contend with. All in all, I believe Gmail will always be the better email service.

Hmm... how many people on here are "plants" for Google? Is the new beta a bit slower? Slightly, but I'm on a high speed connection at home and work and it isn't slow for me using Firefox. On the contrary, it has drastically sped up my work process, especially clicking through e-mails and spam. I just cleaned out 600 unread messages/spam in 5 seconds. Sort by read/unread and hit the delete key and you're all set!
said on May 23, 2006 12:44 AM PDT:
What Yahoo! mail? The server cluster that hosts mail.yahoo.com has been unreacable for over 24 hours now.
I very rarely need to use Yahoo! mail so I usually just log in there to clear out the 10 or so spam messages that get through the filters every day. Now I actually need a bit of information in a message someone sent to my Yahoo! address and I can't get in to read the message.

Hi All,
I tried this Beta at home, after finding out this afternoon at work my Webmail wouldn't work, too old of a workstation for Win2000/XP. Plus, I'd get fired if I tried a Linux LiveCD in it. So I switched back after a few things bugged me like the flags on the wrong side, plus I missed the boxes to check to move or delete in bulk. But I asked on the Yahoo Linux-Newbies Group if any had tried this Beta with any Linux yet. Tonight, I got one answer so far...Yes, it was slow on Ubuntu Linux, but he said it was a P3 with 768 MB RAM. He also added something about overlapping text, but said on the whole it worked on Linux. Beats me why the Yahoo/ATT programmers just don't try it on more Linux Distros and say so. We all know their call centers wouldn't be able to help casual users with Linux questions, not with most not able to handle some Windows or networking questions now.
Let us know what you find out,

For all those poor things who complain of lag using Firefox - swicth to a better browser. Yahoo! Mail Beta may be slightly laggy, but it has the interface of a mail client, and that is what is going to win over work people who can't navigate Gmail well. Firefox struggles with Yahoo! Mail Beta whereas my other browsers including IE don't have a single problem at all.

Also, since the beta release, i find firefox crashes when i access my inbox. In my opinion, Yahoo mail is years behind Gmail... they should be taking notes.
Gmail happy..

Yahoo Beta Mail has been out for almost 2 years (which is ridiculously long for a beta). I've been using it this whole time. I really like the inteface, better than any others I've seen. I can't use gmail because I need Yahoo's folders (I have a sophisticated filtering system).
HOWEVER.... the yahoo beta sucks big time in terms of performance and bugs. It is unbelievably bad, so bad I sometimes can't even do my email. It's getting worse and worse to the point where I am ready to punch my computer... hanging, losing emails I'm composing, etc. After 2 yrs this thing should be in production by now and it's just a mess. I wonder what Yahoo's problem is. I occasionally call and complain to Yahoo but they just tell me to switch back to the old Yahoo email, which is clucky. When I press them they eventually admit they know there are problems with it. They happen so frequently I can hardly stand it anymore.

I have been using new Yahoo for as long it has been available to public....and I am liking the interface...however I would really like notebook and calendar to be part of tabbed browsing...as they brought the address book to be part of it....rather that opening a new window altogether...and i am really looking forward to IM inclusing within the new ajax feature....

I have hit the refresh and automatically get a page to send an error code to Yahoo. I have done this 6 times in a few days. Yahoo keeps telling me it is fixed now. IT IS NOT!
Yahoo puts my own messages from ME in Spam folder. NOT COOL!
I figured out a fix for all this. GMAIL.com
works fine. Yahoo is dead as far as I am concerned. Won't take long for everyone to figure out that I switched.
I can't afford the time to keep opening blank emails that should have something in them.
Gmail.com way better.

I've used Yahoo Beta since it was released to paying customers and really like the interface. I haven't had a reason to complain about it until very recently. It worked fine and with same speed as the previous version for a few years, but in the last few months, I've noticed a definite slowdown... It drives me up the wall!!! What is going on?
Koray said on March 22, 2007 7:13 PM PDT:
it is diffucult to use with firefox (actually you cannot use!!!) is also very slow so it is already beta.

I hate the yahoo beta! it sucks big time! its slow, useless and it doesnt want to switch back. i have the "switch back" link but when i ckick it nothing happens!! very annoying. i have 2 yahoo! accounts. one with beta and one without and i like the one without soooo much more. i see im not alone. most of the comments say its no good so maybe the guys in Yahoo should do some serious rethinking. isnt it supposed to be BETTER??

Somehow Yahoo thought that I might like MailBeta. I HATE it. It is extremely slow. I can't even view messages. We have a 1 mb adsl here and none of the pc s or macs are able to show any of the emails. sorry, one mac showed them because yahoo said MailBeta does not support Safari so it opened up the old mail ;)

I am able to log into my account from another computer but not from my own pc. I can ofcourse chat from my pc, make changes to my account info etc but not able to read my mail, it just shows the subject line but not able to go back to previous classic version either. Those who have successfully gone back to beta please show us the way. Pl respond without fail to nachu0205@gmail.com

dont ever make the mistake of trying yahoo beta it stinks and you cannever ever return to normal yahoo again, you cant read mail or do anything it just gets stuck forever.
@LaxmiNarasimha K. A.
I had your problem a couple of weeks ago. You could:
* try the standard stuff - clear your browser's cache, delete the cookies
OR
* try another browser (Internet Explorer, Firefox, Opera, Safari)
OR
* revert to the old version of Yahoo. There's a link at the top of the page that lets you do that. You can switch between the two versions anytime you want.

i tried switching back also - I wanted to retrieve some information on an old email message, but couldn't "switch".
Really good its working

taken from yahoo help on how to change back to original yahoo from beta if having problems
"I assume you're talking about changing form Yahoo! Mail Beta back to the original Yahoo! Mail.
At the top left of your mail page click Switch Back or Trouble Logging In beside Sign Out and My Account, or click Options above the message window and click Switch to original Yahoo! Mail.
If you can't get to your mail page to click Switch Back or Trouble Logging In, sign in to Yahoo! and click the link below and click "No thanks, remind me later" (written in blue) and you will be switched back to original Yahoo! Mail. "

I have tried out the Beta mail three times since it first came out, and as far as speed goes it's as bad as ever.
I use Firefox but today tried for the first time accessing Beta through Internet Explorer. Lo and behold, the speed problem resolved itself. But as far as going back to IE is concerned, I'd rather swim with crocodiles, so it's back to the old version of Yahoo mail. Incidentally, I'd use G-Mail if it wasn't for losing touch with hundreds of business connections.

I am new to GMail but it seems pretty solid. I have been a Yahoo! email user forever and like it too. However, their new Beta version has some bugs and leaves a lot to be desired for me personally, so I've switched back to regular classic Yahoo! and am using my Google email more now.

Terrible terrible just terrible mail system, almost as bad as hotmail...what are they doing now? used to be pretty well done, anyhow, Gmail is the GO.
As of October 2007, Yahoo Mail "Classic" has been dumbed down even for Yahoo Mail Plus Premium purchasers, and is now missing many features, including integration with the address book and filters, such that email lists no longer show if the sender is in your address book, marking spam no longer adds them to a block filter, and html graphics once blocked in an email cannot be shown (no "show html" button) so you have to click off to the sender's links to see what they sent you, if even possible. Also, it's unreliable, slow, and error prone #5 #14.

I love it the old way and hope that yahoo team could get it back the way it was. I'm crying right now because i really missed it the way it was. Bring it back the original way, Yahoo.

As of Masy 28, 2008, Yahoo "Classic" has suddenly returned the adress feature where it shows a little "rolodex-card-type" icon nect to incoming email addresses so we can click on them to check them and add them to our addressbook. This was an important feature lost for months. Perhaps someone at Yaho oIS reading our complaints and IS trying to give back waht they have taken? If Microsoft bought Yahoo, I would have left forever, so maybe this is Yahoo's way to honor those of us who prefer to stay pure Yahoo, even PAYING for the privelidge.

Dump Yahoo Mail and go to GMail. I've wasted years of my life using Yahoo Mail and finally had my fill this last week... I'm now using a combo of SpamArrest and GMail - I'm a very happy emailer once again (haven't been this happy with email since the 1990's)

I've been using Yahoo Mail for years, and I have to say, over the past couple of years it's become un-freakin' usable!
Last week, every time I sent an email I had to log back in again!!
I finally had enough, and went off the deep end and switched over the GMail. Then I added SpamArrest as the intermediary between Yahoo Mail and my GMAil account (doing "filtered forwarding").
All I can say is: S W E E T !
I haven't been this happy with emailing since the 1990's!
