Google Tests the New iGoogle

Announced in April, the new version of iGoogle that brings social applications is tested in a small number of randomly selected Google accounts.

The new iGoogle places the tabs on the left-hand side of the page and you can expand the tabs to see the list of gadgets and status information, like the number of unread Gmail messages. There's a new chat feature borrowed from Gmail that lets you chat with your contacts while visiting iGoogle - that means iGoogle gets a sense of presence because you'll know when your contacts are online. Since the chat feature will be enabled by default, it's obvious that Google will be able to add options for sharing items and discussing posts with the contacts that are online.

iGoogle also adds a list of updates from your contacts similar to Facebook's newsfeed: you can see stories shared by your contacts in Google Reader, recent photos uploaded to Picasa Web Albums, Google Talk status messages, shared iGoogle themes and gadgets.

Another change is that gadgets have an expanded interface, called canvas view. Gadgets authors will take advantage of this to display more information and make their gadgets more interactive, while your feeds can be read in a Google Reader-like interface. In the future, iGoogle will support OpenSocial applications and the transformation to a social site will be complete.

Google announced that the canvas view will be rolled out to a small percentage of users this month and to more users in July, while the OpenSocial applications "will not work in production until later this summer".

Update (Oct. 16): The new iGoogle has been launched.

  1. Change your homepage to http://www.google.com/ig?gl=all and this should put the tabs back on top. If not use the widget toptabs to fix it and resave your homepage.

  3. oh for f**k sake google, come on!! you would think that you would atleast have the option NOT to have to use this "new" page. or atleast put the ability to move things around on the page. tabs ontop, spell check when you compose or reply to an email, not to have to open "full gmail" to get to the spell checker. the old saying is "if it aint broke dont fix it". man, did you guys screw the pooch on that one. plus, now, if you put it back to the old igoogle using the UK settings it's still not the same as the original page. oh well, off to another browser with the ability to do what i would like.

  5. Thanks to all who posted the UK and Canada pages, and "http://www.google.com/ig?gl=all" tips for getting back my original igoogle. Like just about everyone else posting, I absolutely despise the new layout, but that's not my real problem. The real problem is that I was given no choice, and I can't make my page look like it used to. I for 1000 also hate the side tab thing. I'll continue using "http://www.google.com/ig?gl=all" for now. Hopefully they'll see the light before I lose this one too, at which point my days of a google homepage will have come to an end.

  6. With Chrome (which is great) iGoogle drives me mad with frustration because I can't get rid of the side tab. iGoogle's great strength was allowing the user to lay out the page to suit him/her self. These side tabs should be optional or ditched altogether.

  7. What on earth are google thinking of? The old igoogle page was pretty near perfect. I hate the new layout, and no I wont get used to it. Give me back my old igoogle or its goodbye google

    ReplyDelete
  8. Change the layout back. Put the tabs back on top. Bring back the expand/minimize buttons on all the gadgets. It sucks going through a menu every time.

  9. Thanks to all for the tips. Right now, I'm using

    http://www.google.com/ig?gl=all

as my homepage, and it works like a charm.

    Hopefully this solution will last...

  10. I think the entire goole website works the best for my family and i. I don't see why some people don't like it. we can get local weather, news, and much much morre. If someone didn't have a goole email or an igoole website i would total recomend it to them. If it works the best for me than why wouldn't work the best for anyone else. This is mostly the only website that i use if i need to look up something. It works and i like using it.

    ReplyDelete
  11. I use the goole website for my homepage and for my toolbar on my computer. This search engine works the best. I loike this website.

  18. Oh thank GOODNESS for this link that was posted: http://www.google.com/ig?gl=all - I am SO glad to have my old iGoogle page back!

  19. Yeah, please tabs belong on top and not on the side! Move them back to the top.

    ReplyDelete
  20. I love the iGoogle layout with the tabs on the left-hand side of the page and you can expand the tabs to see the list of gadgets and status information. Please keep the layout!

    ReplyDelete
  21. Yep, the tree tabs on the side are great when viewing chunks of data rather than canvas style. Better orientation.
Save the hassle to expand the canvas to get more information too.

    ReplyDelete
  22. You can't enlarge the weather section, yet it cuts words in half. I don't chat and I don't want to waste a whole column that I don't use.

  23. I LOVE the old iGoogle. I don't mind the tabs on the side, but having to take three steps to open an item seems pretty regressive. THANK YOU so much to anonymous above who posted the below. IT WORKS!!:

If you use firefox and you dislike this feature I would strongly encourage you to try this add-on to help turn off the left navigation bar:
    https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/521
(Search: "remove it permanently", if the link doesn't work)

My iGoogle is back to normal now.

  24. HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE
    Absolutely NO
    Emphatically NO
Can I be more clear? Tabs at the top and stop taking up space on my page with your crappy tab bar down the side. Very simple: you give me the option of going back to having the tab hidden at the top or I stop using iGoogle.
    End of.

    ReplyDelete
  25. This piece of junk keeps blowing off my normal websites.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I think the new iGoogle makes a better use of the space.
Give me my old Google Back!

    ReplyDelete
  27. This is fucking ridiculous. I had my iGoogle set out all nicely and now there's a huge patch of wasted space on the left. I don't want a million things crammed on my page I just wanted to see my gmail quickly, the news and a couple of other things.

Put in an option to turn this sidebar off. I know you're listening, Google.

    ReplyDelete
  28. http://www.google.com/ig?gl=all not working anymore? NOOOOO!!!!!
It looks like they've finally forced us into the new igoogle. And yes it STILL sucks.

    ReplyDelete
  29. NO. NOOOOOO! Why doesn't http://www.google.com/ig?gl=all work any more!? NOOOOOOO! The tabs are back, and they are still as intrusive and ugly as ever!

    ReplyDelete
  30. http://www.google.ca/ig?gl=all still works... for now. Stupid google!

    ReplyDelete
  31. @Alex Chitu:

    Works like a charm. Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  32. Use Firefox with Stylish add-on. I use 'revert to old classic theme' with igoogle and use 'all' in the URL instead of country-specific, eg. http://www.google.com/ig?gl=all

This way I have the old-style google permanently instead of the disgusting horrible new one with the pointless side tabs. Also it will take the round edges away from everything, and revert back to square so you have more space.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I absolutely HATE my iGoogle page! It was awful to launch the internet only to find that my tabs had been removed without my permission. Now, valuable space on the left is being used up. I prefer having my tabs at the top as they were easy to access, and I want them back. The Google team should read all our feedback and complaints, and they should give everyone THE OPTION TO SELECT which style they want. Options, Google team! As in, GIVE all the faithful users a choice, not FORCE a change upon us!

    ReplyDelete
  34. I am plain fed up. I've tried all the suggestions mentioned above, but for some reason, I cannot change this sickening new layout. What I want is simple - the option to choose how I want my page to look. I just hope the moron at Google responsible for this fiasco is reading all this and fixing it for everyone. DON'T FORCE US TO HAVE OUR TABS AT THE SIDE, PLEASE!!! AND GET RID OF THOSE ROUNDED CORNERS!

    ReplyDelete
  35. Much better to look at. But again, lets see what comes oui think it is better future

    ReplyDelete
  36. *** Solution *** I had the new iGoogle on my PC at home and the old on my work's PC. I wanted the new one on both - crazy I know.

I realised that my home PC's home page (new igoogle) was going to http://www.google.com/ig, and my work's (old igoogle) was going to http://www.google.co.uk/ig

I changed this to blah blah google.com for the new one.

Similarly if you change to google.co.uk (or, I assume, to your own regions google) the igoogle will revert to old one.

    Simple.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I hate it, please give the option to turn off tabs, I don't use them, I don't care about weather forecasts etc... all I want is my simple 3 box theme, on the left I have national UK news, in the middle my gmail with one mail per line and on the right the BBC Football sport headlines.

I don't care for anything more, I don't want it. Please please please give the option to disable these stupid tabs.

    ReplyDelete
  38. i do not like this new igoogle at all.

i stick by most things that google brings out, as the majority of they are fantastic, but this is a step in the wrong direction for me.

please at least give the option to switch back to the old layout.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I really don't like this new layout. In my layout I choose 3 columns, now I have a 4th pseudo column telling me whats in my columns!!

Hello Google, I know what I have on my igoogle page, I don't need you taking up more of my screenspace telling me what I already know.
No thanks to new igoogle layout.

    ReplyDelete
  40. They should make the sidebar like one of the gadgets so you can add it if you want it, it's a bad move to force people to change personalised settings that they've spent time setting up.....I don't like it either!

    ReplyDelete
  41. The link Alex Chitu provided is still working, putting tabs back at the top:

    http://www.google.com/ig?hl=all

    ReplyDelete
  42. Why ? Why ? Why don't you put on option to remove it ? I'm looking for iGoogle alternatives...

    ReplyDelete
  43. I don't like the new layout, it takes up far too much of the page (almost a third) and The space along the top, where the tabs were is wasted now - I much preferred the tabs along the top, although the ability to enlarge the "canvas is good". Could we not have the option whether to use the old layout or this lousy new one?

    ReplyDelete
  44. i hate the new the new sidebar,it looks well messy now,the columns are all out of balance, half the gadgets dont display properly anymore[example...i see half a clock if i open my ff bookmarks], there is a black bar under the banner, news headlines dont display propely[coz they dont have enough width],as i scroll down my igoogle there is big blank space on left..what a waste of space, the gadgets bite into the bottom banner as well please give us a choice google or u will loose many loyal users

    ReplyDelete
  45. I hate the new layout to igoogle. As others have said a waste of screen space used for a few tabs. Looks horrible and unbalanced. One of the few times I really, really hate what google has gone and done.
I hope that google come to its senses and give the option to change back.

    ReplyDelete
  46. The "Chat" additional column on the left hand side is atrocious. It reduces the size of my three columns so I now have to Zoom in to read.
I don't mind what Google does to "improve" its Home page but don't be so arrogant as to not let people keep their old format.
Because of this I am now back to Yahoo as a home page. Not as good content but at least they don't bugger you around.

    ReplyDelete
  47. I hate the tabs at the left. Put them back on top. Please.

    ReplyDelete
  48. << Why does iGoogle include a left-side navigation? Why isn't it optional?

The left navigation isn't optional because it's an important part of iGoogle's new features. First, it provides a scalable way to quickly navigate between gadgets that are in full-screen mode -- and full-screen mode is something we made based on user feedback asking for bigger screen territory for gadgets. Secondly, the left navigation provides a home for new iGoogle features, the first of which is the integrated chat (and there are more in the works). >>

    (answer from Paul, Google Employee)

    ReplyDelete
  49. Stop the tabs on the left side. It takes too much space, listing all gadgets is useless and user unfriendly. I am still using an small screen/low resolution so all space is valuable to me.
I don't use chat, but there is no option to completly remove it, you just get a link to enable it again...

Please introduce an option so the user can choose if he wants to place the tabs on top and/or use the chat function. There must be other and better ways to provide access to the new features.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Agree with all of you against the new look of Ig... I set my stuff in the front page so I could see everything I need before I start surfing without even having to scroll, now everything lost its structure, and I have a page full of needless text.
Please Google people go back to the previous version.

    ReplyDelete
  51. The least google could do is supply an option to turn options OFF instead of pushing things through customers throaths! Google and its new lefthand-menu-bar, is also subject to consumer-choices, hence either I'll use the old google or leave alltogether, alternatives being amongst others http://www.alltheweb.com and http://www.netvibes.com. Good marketing is about fullfilling consumerneeds and monitoring their wants and not about forcefully pushing the corporations objectives to the consumers desktop!

    ReplyDelete
  52. The sidebar is indeed a total waste of space! I want the normal Gmail interface, not a derivative of it in cluttered space!

    ReplyDelete
  53. You guys really are wasting a lot of time complaining.. A quick search on google finds this..

    http://www.google.com/ig?hl=all

Accessing Igoogle from that link returns the tabs back to the way they were..

    ReplyDelete
  54. google.ca/ig is my homepage now, and will remain that way until they decide to "upgrade" the .ca site with these new "features", at that point I will simply find a new service. I won't conform, I won't learn to like it, i'll simply leave. Big deal, right? Well it seems that i'm not alone, I think the real backlash is yet to come when you decide to force this crap onto everyone who is left.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Please give me the option to switch my igoogle back to the old style.
The left bar is a waste of screen space.

    ReplyDelete
  56. I don't get it.

Facebook for example can add the option to change your entire interface into "Pirate" mode but Google can't leave the top tabs as an option?

    sigh

    ReplyDelete
  57. igoogle was my best friend and u google guys had snatched away my best friend from me. the lest side home menu looking ugly, all the tab has become fatty. plz plz give me back asap my friend i cant tolerate this

    ReplyDelete
  58. this new layout is a piece of garbage. what a waste of useful page space. If I want this useless information I should be able to add it not have it forced on me. Give us an option to OPT OUT. I HATE THIS LAYOUT.

    ReplyDelete
  59. I hate the new tab! Can you make it optional please??? Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  60. I'm in Canada, and they've just implemented this change for iGoogle in Canada as of a couple of days ago. I hate it, hate it, hate it! Oh, and did I mention, I hate it! An entire left side column of wasted space. Off to find another site that operates a portal...darned if I'm going to continue using this as it stands. Why in the world could they not give us the option to just hide that navigation bar? Not that difficult, is it?

    ReplyDelete
  61. The tabs on the side... Hate it! Waste of space!
I don't need to see the components on my other tabs listed on the side... I know what's on my other tabs... I put it there!
And for the upcoming chat, make it a component like all others, that way we can put it where we want!

    ReplyDelete
  62. hey paloma vita dont say thanx to google. they stole what was a good page from us. u should raise the roof. there have been literally hundreds and hundresds more comments all over the net and they dont give a crap what we think. maybe bing is the answer. at least google isnt running the show there.

    ReplyDelete
  63. I was using www.google.ca/ig to bypass this abomination, looks like that no longer works. The left column bar is such a waste of space. Most people don't care about the chat. Having the ability to expand your tab heading is absolutely useless. It may be marginally useful if a user has over 100 RSS Feeds/gadgets on their homepage, but I would think most people have a homepage where you don't scroll down.

Do all the QA people at google test their sites on 1920x1200 dual monitors?

    ReplyDelete
  64. So...

ig?gl=all, hl=all, and the Canada option no longer work. I've tried a few homepages for other countries (For the record, .mx, .es, .uk, .jp, and .vn don't work) with no success. Does anyone have any other suggestions?

I'm fed up with the tabs, and just when I think I've found a solution, the tabs invade once again. If anything, like other users here, I wish it was an option, and not a feature forced down users' throats.

    ReplyDelete
  65. Apparently, iGoogle v2 has been rolled out internationally and adding ?hl=all no longer displays the old layout. The trick was temporary and it wasn't documented. If Google wanted to offer a choice, it would have added an option last year, when iGoogle v2 was launched in the US.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Thanks for the info.

Darn, I was hoping you might have another trick, documented or not, up your sleeve. It's unfortunate that there is no choice, but maybe if the v2 layout is not well-received internationally, iGoogle will revert back to the old version. Sounds more like wishful thinking on my part, however.

    ReplyDelete
  67. I don't like the new Igoogle design. I want the old one back. How do I do that? The new is just a waste of space. I like it clean. I might consider dropping it.

    ReplyDelete
  68. I just wondering. How many negative comment needs to realize this left side navigation bar is sucks. Why should need any negative comment? Is this not obvious? My eyes are hurts...

    ReplyDelete
  69. I hate this layout - and it's on google.co.uk now!

    ReplyDelete
  70. When will you have a fix to get rid of the home tab on the left that wastes so much space?

It is irritating, unnecessary, and a waste of space... and why do you force me to log out of that unattractive "Chat" thing in the middle.

    ReplyDelete
  71. I H-A-T-E it. I want my old iGoogle tabs back. The new layout make the page too cluttered.

    ReplyDelete
  72. Like almost everyone else I hate the new iGoogle tab. It takes up too much space and does not allow me to minimize this unwanted intrusion into my space. Google - cop-on - get rid of this horrible idea and give us back our tabbed iGoogle page. Then we can add or remove tabs to our pages as we please - not as Google dictates.

    ReplyDelete
  73. It's horrible. Let me get rid of that home tab.

    ReplyDelete
  74. The home tab increases the page load-up time. Though I know some people use 'chat', I don't Why not make it an option instead of forcing it upon us. Google is now acting like Yahoo and Microsoft.

    ReplyDelete
  75. I can't help but notice that this new version of Igoogle screw up the themes by hiding half de pictures. I prefer the older version.

    ReplyDelete
  76. It's bad.

    Why I liked Google?

    1. Simple
    2. Configurable
    3. Fast

    What do we have now???
    1. Tabs takes a lot of space on the left side of the page.
    2. I want to configure/rearrange!!
    3. I think (I will try to measure) it's slower and slower.

    ReplyDelete
  77. Don't like the tabs on the left at all.
Take up too much space on the page. Should keep old option in.

I tried the javascript:_dlsetp('v2=0'); fix but it doesn't seem to be doing anything.

    ReplyDelete
  78. I hate it, and not being able to turn it off annoyed me so much I changed my home page. I even felt strongley enougth about it to find where to post a comment.
I figured a few dished up ads was OK in exchange for having the google page. But changing the layout without being able to turn off the sidebar was the last straw for me. The comments I've seen around the web must mean thousands are doing the same.
Easy enough to do a google search on the subject, come on google use you own tools.

    ReplyDelete
  79. for firefox just install the "igoogle tab remover" add-on. It works awesome

    ReplyDelete
  84. no me gusto la barra izq ocupa toda la pagina y no deja ver el tema completo demaciado desagradable por lo menos deben tener una opcion de desactivar esa barra de la izq

    ReplyDelete
  85. I hate the look of the new iGoogle. It was much better before when the tabs ran horizontal. The big bold tabs along the side with big + signs beside them are ugly as hell. Bring back the old iGoogle and dispose of this hideous design.

    ReplyDelete
  86. I hate this page with this tab !!!!!!
I want my old igoogle back !!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  87. hate the new look. dont need a useless bar taking up 1/3 of the screen space

    ReplyDelete
  88. Just suddenly, in the last few days, my Search History has started displaying pages I go to from outside of a Google Search. So if I get an Email Alert for a favourite subject, and click on it, Google Search subsequently displays this in its list of Searches. Apart from not being strictly accurate - I didn't Google it - the link is displayed in the form of the web address which can be thirty, forty, fifty characters long. This extends the space occupied by the Search History Gadget forcing the column to the right to be displaced to appear underneath the other two columns. (I am using three column format, or would like to).
The only way i can get the third column back is to go into Search History itself and remove the particular non-searches that are in a too-long-number-of-digits-without-a-space style that are the offending entries using the "Remove Item" option.
I'm not going to have the patience to do that for very long.

    ReplyDelete
  89. Their failure to remove the left hand waste-of-space bar even after so many complaints in so many forums all over the web suggests someone can't face admitting they were wrong. Maybe their job is on the line if the format is seen not to have worked/been accepted?

    ReplyDelete
  90. Is iGoogle better than or worse than Google because I really want iGoogle.

    ReplyDelete
  91. Why don't you let people choose between tabs on top or tabs on left ???
    It's unbeliveable !! I dislike the f..k tabs on left !!!
    Thanks Google !

    ReplyDelete
  92. The new look really make my headache worse...
I just CAN NOT get used to it
Please give us the option to revert back to old one...

    ReplyDelete
  93. I like this iGoogle, it has lots of potential for visualizing real-time data using gadgets and JSON for the data transfer format.

However, I wish I could remove the search bar at the top which takes too much place. iGoogle is something totally different from search. A Google search module can be added inside iGoogle, it should not be the other way round (iGoogle being added to the search interface).

    ReplyDelete
  94. Does that 'Updates' widget exist? Did it ever? Would nearly make iGoogle worth using...

    ReplyDelete
  95. It sucks! My email is part of the partnerpage on google. My inbox no longer shows up, even though it's supposed to. There must be something wrong. I've tried deleting the cookies, following other suggestions, etc, but it never shows up. I can forget about reading my emails.. CAUSE I CAN'T IF MY INBOX DOESN'T EVEN SHOW UP!!! I tried to get help but I cannot contact their support group w/o being a gmail account. It is really annoying. Google did a TERRIBLE job, and I am very disappointed. This new iGoogle format needs to be thrown away!

    ReplyDelete
  96. This is awful...I want my old page back. I cannot figure out any way to save my new configuration...all I get is the useless setup page every time.

    ReplyDelete
  97. Once again, iGoogle bypasses plugins that were specifically created for disabling the pointless tabs.
    Hurray, good job.

    ReplyDelete
  98. I used to LOOOOVE Google. On the fly I could snap to Google as a third brain lobe, snatch the information, and whip back to my writing. Now I can't find Google: there is only iGoogle. On the fly I snap to it.. and it prepares and opens up some social-network trash, and gets set and after a painful, loathsome 15 seconds is ready to look up "penguin arbitrage" or whatever.
    BADLY DEGRADED SERVICE.

    ReplyDelete
  99. I've already read toooo many poor reviews. I love my current iGoogle page. I made it. It was I wanted and I don't want it changed! I hope it's not a forced chaged. Even Facebook, the king of the forced changes . . . is given you a option to say the same or covert to their timeline. I hate the timeline ;( and from what I see of the, the new iGoogle seem like the I will be taken aways ;(
