GrandCentral 2.0, Almost Ready to Be Released

Jeff Huber from Google writes that "a new [GrandCentral] version on new infrastructure will be coming soon" in a comment of a story about a recent certificate error in GrandCentral.

David Pogue adds: "Everyone from GrandCentral still works on GrandCentral, and the 2.0 version is imminent. A PR guy explained to me that it's taken a year to merge the GrandCentral servers with Google's, but they're nearly done."

Jeff Hubert posts an interesting list of acquisitions and the resulting Google products, but the only surprising news is that Zingku, the mobile social network acquired by Google in 2007, was used to create Google FriendConnect:

"Writely + XL2Web + TonicSystems -> Google Docs,
Keyhole -> Google Earth/Maps,
Urchin + MeasureMap -> Google Analytics,
JotSpot -> Google Sites,
Zingku -> Google FriendConnect,
Android -> Android,
DoubleClick -> DoubleClick,
Feedburner -> AdSense for Feeds (in-process);
sorry about Dodgeball".

  1. Explain "nearly done". I read this earlier today and hope it to be true, but will not be upset if it's not. Hopefully we will see a version with Gmail/Google Contacts integration via a merge tool. One phone number per Google account would be beneficial as well.

  2. When voicemail shows up in gmail alongside emails and google talk chat sessions, and the contact database is common across all of those, that'll be nice...

  12. We will have to see how it will first be implemented in Spain ( according to http://tinyurl.com/ceaznb ). Then we can maybe hope for some other EU action ... UK would be a good place to continue after Spain.

  13. Awesome! I am glad it is not cut.

  14. Yipee!, I'm one of the lucky few who have a GC and I'm ecstatic about hearing some sort of news.

    It was funny a couple weeks ago when I begged a friend to let me use her GC account for my parents bill collector infested house phone because she doesn't use it and she told me "your crazy..hell no.. GC is like Gold"

  15. Europe? Grancentral isn't even available in all 50 US states. I hope that changes. I have a GC number, but I never use it because it's not in my area code.

  16. I'm really glad to hear this. I love GrandCentral and depend on it every day.

  17. I predict it will be ready in the the second quarter of this year because Ribbit's Amphibian service is due to go out of BETA in Q2-2009. Ribbit is a serious competitor to Grand central. It has everything GC has and more.

  18. Fuggin-A it's about time! Seriously though, I am stoked to hear that "the rumors of GrandCentral's death were greatly exaggerated" ;o

  19. Seems like along time to merge the servers with Google. It will be interesting how it compares with Ribbit.

  20. I hope GrandCentral improves a lot cause I have tested it a few years ago and it lacked a lot of features.

  21. I cant wait for it.

  22. GrandCentral is one of those web/communication tools that is like nothing else. I love it, been using it for many months. "Never miss a call you want to take; never take a call you want to miss." Life without it would be like life without the web... . I hope 2.0 is even better.

  23. I'm very interested in this. For people using it, is it reliable enough to use for business calls?

  24. Also, can you port your existing number over to Grandcentral?

  25. I am sooo not holding my breath on this one. They have just sat on this product for years now. Actually, they'll probably release 2.0 and still have no new invites. They seem to be begging someone else to take the market away from them. But then again nothing ever comes out of beta from Google. Come on guys you need actual products these days you can't just run on ego forever!

  26. Today I had an interesting thing happen on my GC account. I was going to dial out from my GC address book and it said that I didn't have enough credits and asked if I wanted to add some. I declined and clicked again and got the usual response... Could we be going to a paid model. The TOS references payment.

    Anyone else see this?

  27. I haven't heard much about what will actually be in the 2.0.

    I wrote a blog post on what features should be in the next version. There's a survey, so that you can voice your opinion too.

    Maybe we can influence what Google does…. maybe. ;-)

  28. @completenut I used to see this all the time, now not so much.

    @anon I've been using it for a loooong time and it's been very reliable.

    Gotta admit though, i was really nervous it was gonna die a painful dodgeball death. Now please Google give us text messaging in this bad boy. Thanks!!!
