Google Docs Labs?

A Google Docs error message has an interesting suggestion: "If you are running a Google Docs experiment, turn it off."

Google Docs will probably add a Labs section with experimental features, much like Gmail Labs and Google Calendar Labs.

Here's what I'd like to see in the list of experiments: document pagination, chat sidebar in all Google Docs services, limited editing mode, integration with Google Scholar, autofilter and better conditional formatting for Google Spreadsheets.

Some of the most popular suggestions for Google Docs: drag and drop image placement, more page formatting options, mobile editing, integration with Gmail and an image editor.

  4. It'd be pretty awesome if they supported a "stripped-down" HTML editor for at least the "Documents" created by Google Docs. Most of the time I find that I don't need all of the bloated inline styles and formatting that Google pushes into documents by default -- something like TinyMCE's standards-compliant mode would be awesome.

One reason I still greatly dislike Google's acquisition of JotSpot is that they took away one of its best features -- the "forced well-formed XML" mode.

  5. Maybe when they are writing about experiments, they thinks about things like support for scripts in spreadsheets available in Google Docs for Apps? When I was applying for this on page it was probably called "experiment" ;-)
Other thing is that I have not idea, how to turn it off ;-) So maybe it isn't this.

  7. I would like to see the drawing editor be integrated into the main document editor so drawing around/above/below/on-top-of text/images already in the document would be possible and basically turning it into a cross between a document and image editor. I use google docs for taking notes in school and find it very frustrating not to be able to draw an arrow between two blocks of text. Also I would like to see more advanced text layout abilities (without having to manually edit the html and css) especially for having two blocks of text side-by-side (one aligned left and the other aligned right [it also would be nice to easily float drawings the same way you can an imported image]). I could go on for a very long time about what google docs is missing, what they did wrong, and how they could improve it, but I should probably keep my ideas for when I develop my own online document editor.

  9. google docs for google wave.

it would be nice to create a form in google docs, and have it posted/integrated with wave.

  12. I would simply love to see the existing functionality work better. Specifically, font handling. I have SO many issues with random fonts, deleting text then retyping and having it come in in the wrong size or font. I literally waste over an hour on every specifications doc just cleaning up the font formatting.

I'd also like to see auto bulleting when I type "*" a la MS word and the format painting feature. That single feature is the BEST feature MS ever invented.

Lastly, drag n drop picture uploading would be great.
Oh no, wait, better conversion from .DOC files. Basically if we upload a DOC file to start (especially with pictures), it turns out a total mess. It's almost better to cut and paste in from scratch

  15. there should be tagging like feature in docs, where you can tag and mention other documents[that are accessible by the sharing group] in a doc.
