Quick Search Box for Windows, Discontinued

Quick Search Box, a small Google application bundled with Google Toolbar, is no longer available for Windows. The software was both a program launcher and a Google search box instantly available even if your browser is closed.

"At Google, we like to launch early and often, and iterate on our products. We often experiment with new features in Toolbar and sometimes we have to decide how best to focus our efforts on features we expect will yield the most benefit to users in the long run. Along these lines, the Quick Search Box feature will no longer be available in Google Toolbar. At this time we have no plans to release it separately, but I'll keep the community informed if these plans change. Thanks to all the users who helped us test and improve the feature," says Brian Rose, from Google.

Quick Search Box is still available for Mac, iPhone and Android, but each flavor of the application has different features. I think it would be a good idea to add all the features from QSB for Mac to the Windows version and release it as a standalone application. It could be a lightweight alternative to Google Desktop, an extensible open source application that lets you search the files from your computer and your online data from services like Gmail or Google Docs.

{ Thanks, Marcus. }

  1. That's really too bad to hear, the Quick Search Box was the only reason I bothered to keep Google Toolbar for IE installed just for the application launching features. I guess I'll give Launchy another try now.

  3. @Jeremy:

Quick Search Box was actually a separate application that had its own installer. Unfortunately, Google Toolbar automatically updates you to the latest version, which no longer includes Quick Search Box.

I'm sure you can install an older version of Google Toolbar from Filehippo, find QSB's files in c:\program files\google\, copy them to a new folder and uninstall Google Toolbar.

  4. This has to be for IP reasons if it's still available on other platforms. It's too useful to arbitrarily kill.

  6. I have it disappear on both my work and home Windows XP boxes. The button goes away, but there's still a space for it next to the start button. It comes back on reboot - haven't analyzed the conditions for the disappearance.

  7. I have been using this for a while now and am finding more and more useful. I use it mostly as a launcher but have slowly been adding it more to my workflow. I hope they only reason they are getting rid of it is to put out something even better. I hope.

  8. Love this. Launchy has been acting buggy/slow lately. This is blazing fast, just like GDS.

I do have one question--by default, even with the option unchecked to search Google online, it seems to search via Chrome (my default browser). Is there any way to get it to search by default, my desktop?

  9. You all could migrate to Google Desktop, it has a quick search box. You can uncheck the indexing options for files and just index application shortcuts

  10. Google Search Box is really quick when it comes to find your windows things as well as online products. I really like it and used it

  11. I hope you all reconsider. It was always a quick way to search for the one thing I needed to quickly access, without having to first log into my homepage and then typing in my search... =(

  12. I agree with Jeremy. I wii never use most of the Google Toolbar features. QSB was one very notable exception. What the hell ails Google?

  13. Man, that sucks. I used that all the time because it was so handy. Now the next best thing is opening Chrome and typing a question. I really don't want to do all my web searches by opening a browser first.

    Bad & sad move, Google!

  17. Here is a work-around to get it back:

I am still using it, but if I begin a search with the letter "c" it crashes. Happens in both Vista and 7. Is that happening to anyone else?

  18. Quick Search box was such a useful feature even with Windows 7 having search built in. It will be nice to get it back.

  20. Quick search box was the only reason I installed the tool bar. Miss it and very upset google made decision to get rid of it especially without maybe asking users how they felt about the QSB

  22. How much should I pay for google to be able to have the Quick Search box back?
    I paid T.T.

This news me cry because, without exaggeration.
This tool was very important to me. And did that day I tried to reinstall on my compute

  23. Why should you pay Google when you can install it for free? Uninstall the toolbar, install an old version of Google Toolbar ( http://www.filehippo.com/download_google_toolbar_ie/6728/ ) and you won't lose Quick Search Box when the software is automatically updated.

  27. This made my whole computer easier to use. Just double-tab CTRL and up it pops. Microsoft will never make anything that easy, and we need people like Google to do that for us.

    Why was this taken away?!?

  28. I still have it installed on my work computer. I'm fighting IT to NOT reimage my machine because I'll lose it forever.... I know I'll lose the fight one day, but I'm holding on.

Can someone just write a quick python script to do the same thing? I'll donate!
