Google Wishlist for 2007

Google did a lot of great things in 2006. Think about it: in December 2005, we didn't have Google Calendar, Google Docs & Spreadsheets, chat in Gmail, Google Notebook, Google Trends, Google Earth for Mac and Linux, Google Checkout.

What would I like to see from Google in 2007?

- A better Gmail that lets you preview messages, search and manage attachments.

- A real Google Address Book with shared profiles that works in all Google services and it's easier to manage than the current Gmail Contacts.

- A way to search the content created using Google services (Gmail messages, calendars, Blogger posts, comments, Google Notebook, Google Groups).

- A central place for all the files uploaded to Google.

- Video conferences, call to phone numbers, spell-checker, interoperability with Skype, AIM, plugins in Google Talk.

- A more interactive Google News.

- A personalized feed reader that filters the news, finds related perspectives and creates your own news site.

- Bring Google Desktop to the desktop by integrating it into a file manager. You know, like Total Commander.

- Bring time to web search, archive content and let me search the web the way it was on a certain date.

- Google Recommendations: extend this gadget to a new service.

Plus something that's really hard (who wouldn't want that?):

- Bring meaning to search: find structured content, use tagging, annotations, object recognition to improve text search, image search, video search.

What would you like from Google? In case you're wondering, someone from Google will read your wishlists.

Fix: when traveling, not have language preferences change based on location (i.e. when I travel in China), but based on what I have historically used - ENGLISH.

  7. Politicans have gotten a lot of mileage out of creating a sense of fear between them v/s us. I wish Google can bring the world community closer by removing fear of unknown and by increasing mutual understanding.

  8. Standalone mobile versions of Gcal, GReader and GTalk (which ought to be interoperable with Yahoo!, MSN, AIM).

And the oft-rumoured GPhone, of course!

  9. I'd like to see google get into the mobile devices seriously with integrated services. Gmail, calendar, gtalk, google maps, etc. all to work on mobile devices. Most of all I dream of google doing something about the outrageous charges we all get charged for communications services. I can not understand why it has to be so expensive. Just a side note, I often try to send .exe files to myself to archive them but gmail doesn't let me do that.

    2) Ability to SEARCH (or SORT) by SIZE (in order to find the largest messages 9or messages with the largest attachments) to delete.
I can't begin to tell you how many times I've had to go delete messages which I would have like to have kept, but I was running out of space. I'm about to have to do that again ...
Come on Google guys -- you're clever -- this should be a SIMPLE thing for you do provide us!

  23. Shoot me for pointing out something so basic, but it's impossible to do fine searches in Google for programming language syntax. Try to find text like "abc.123(def_g)". Google parses out the punctuation and the hits returned are completely useless. Even for something as common as C# we need to surround it in quotes all the time or we'll get hits on "C", which is Not what we want! C'mon Google! Try to search for code that you know is in some Sourceforge project, usenet/groups forum, or your own code. If you don't get hits then you need to work on the code.

  24. Perhaps this has been said before, but storage space for files would be great. I'd like to use a few GBs to upload my files and download them from other computers. Right now I have important files attached to drafts, but it would be great to have one's own "google-drive" on the web?

  25. What about using Google-Earth as a new Virtual World Browser, leading to virtual scenarios builded with Multiverse development feature:
    Hyper-Google <> the portal to hyper-multiverse

[and into each virtual scenario a new bunch of possibilities to link to other new virtual worlds, in which infinite new linking possibilities arise ... and so on].

I recently discovered Multiverse which seems to be a way of creating virtual worlds, and I tried to imagine a tool like GoogleSea. Based on Google-Earth (actually there can be found some sinked ship's location's marks). Such a tool could lead to a diving location, where someone could enter a virtual world (based on Multiverse environment) where all the geographic "real" data (previously converted to a Multiverse virtual location) could be displayed along while the "player" of the virtual world goes diving by.

New evolution in the "www", could be turned into the "w3D" ?

    ...
    New session protocols involved
    ...
Mass remote storage will be needed for the new Virtual-Sites and Virtual-Portals
    ...
    New malware and threats
    ...

[please excuse me about my english]

  28. I read an article about GDrive and it just sounds amazing. Google really needs to offer online storage capabilities to their members. I am a total Google fan, I think it is great. There isn't a company I would trust more with all of my important documents and files. I'm a graphic designer so it's imperitive that I back up my work. I can never have it stored in too many places. If GDrive was equipped with unlimited space to store things that would be a dream. Also, it should hopefully to get all those files onto the website. I use primarily Mac computers and a simple drag and drop format would be amazing. I'm sure that is extremely complicated but it certainly would be easier than going through and manually browsing and uploading 20GB of files.
Thank you so much for taking the time to read all of the comments left, including this one.
    Keep up the good work!!!!!!

  38. I think Google should develop a true cross platform compiler and IDE of their own. One with the ease of learning of VB and the power of C++ or C# but with true cross-platform cabability.

If mono can do this for a platform that is designed for Windows, surely Google can do this even better. Sort of a better Java.

  44. I am hopeful for an Operating System from GOOGLE for the individual PC that is relativly free like the UBUNTU by Linux but that can accept Windows based programs and do even more for the PC user then WINDOWS XP or VSITA. Such an OS could be sold for the cost of the DISK at stores all over the world or by land mail or be downloaded from Google sources as can Ubuntu. Such an OS would leave Microsoft Windows in the dust. Let us all support the new GOOGLE OS development.

  51. 1. Ability to transfer ownership of a Google Apps document from one account to another.

    2. Ability to manage collaboration and view rights on FOLDERS of on-line documents, with an option to override individual attributes assigned to specific documents. I leave it to you to decide whether only the 'owner' of the document should be allowed to do this.

Basically, this would allow Google Apps to be hosted in an on-line file system, similar to what one would normally use on a networked server.

  52. I'd like to be able to attach a comment to my shared feed items.

  55. I would like to see a way improved Google video application. Meaning video's don't look like being recorded with 2 pixel camera's. If Google want to be no.1 they put this on their top-priority list.

  56. It would be great to create a web-based ajax browser! Simple and Secure, and because it's web based - it is fully cross-platform! Just imagine - you dont need to install google toolbar to save your history - it will be saved in web-based browser, and + ability to save sessions & passwords to the visited links!!!

  59. Today google-apps is powerful. One thing I miss though is what I have today for my domain. Ability to associate a complete domain with a user.

Example, I have domain.net in google-apps, which I have users under. And I can create user1.domain.net and make a nickname for user1 to have user1@user1.domain.net. I would like *@user1.domain.net to be forwarded to user1.

Very nice to prevent spam, when you sign up for a newsletter or something you just enter newsletter@user1.domain.net and if I get spam to that address I can just unsubscribe to the newsletter and block the address.

  63. I would like to search after only some file types in "Images search". Now I have to use the slower ordinary search with operators like filetype:svg OR filetype:eps but without images in the result list. Eg searching after flowers in vector format, it takes some time to browse the results to see good ones.

  70. The ability to select your home country, so when you travel, the advertisements and search results relate to your home country rather than refering to your current ip location. I travel a lot and have no interest in the advertisements in other countries. There is an exiting country preference option, however it only seems to have a limited affect on your search query.

  74. I'd like to add:

    - Gmail: to be able to specify a future date and time when I want the email to be sent.

    - Sites: to be able to access and download the attached files !! it's not working nowadays.

    ReplyDelete
  75. I would like a place where I can post functions I would like to see Google provide. For instance, a standing "wishlist" of things I am unable to find in a google search either web or image. Image searches are particularly skimpy and I'm wondering why public person has such poor access to all the databases in museums and universities.

    ReplyDelete
  76. 1. Option for your contacts to send message(SMS) to your mobile for free, if you are offline or away.
    2. Join all google services together.

  77. Yes most of other comments PLUS

My BIGGEST issues are with findong things (ironically)

1 - ability to view a message thread HEIRARCHICALLY ie. indented

2 - for above - be able to show/epand "details" showing the message header for ALL at once.

3 - And be abe un-group the thread and see messages individually (like older style Yahoo etc).. sometime useful

    4. keep a MRU list fo last custom searches in dropdown as OFTEN want to reuse or slightly modify a search from ealier session but dont need yet another Filter

    5. have a QUICK LABEL button that adds the current search criteria (as in 4 above) to create a Filter just prompt for a Label - easy!

    6. be ale to open a message in a NEW TAB (am I missing an abvius way to do this as it a areal pain in the ass as it is!)

More but others have covered most of them.

    ReplyDelete
  78. Oh and I forgot to add

    1. FULLY support HTML
ie. for signatures, images, pasting images (curently only works from IE6+ in a long about way of copy/past)

    2. Have a FULl selection of font to use not just the 6 provided

    3. REMEMBER the last used/default (where is this setting) font for next time!

    ReplyDelete
  79. Gmail is my primary email account. I use it to collect from some other emails including my ISP. I have notice the emails are collected on random occasions of approximately 40 or so minutes. Can Google add a 'update external emails' button to save me the time going to settings and refreshing the accounts to check for up to date emails.

    ReplyDelete
  80. the new calendar sync with outlook is great. Could you throw in the to do list as well? That would be excellent!

    ReplyDelete
  81. I would really like Google to make a Linux version of Sketchup. It is really the only thing that stops me completely abandoning MS for Ubuntu.

    ReplyDelete
  82. gmail needs the ability to add labels when composing a new mail message. In the present situation, the user must send, then reopen his post to add a label, a completely redundant and useless step. Since the writer almost certainly knows the label he intends for the post being written, a simple pulldown to choose a label during message composition would save several clicks and waits.

    ReplyDelete
  83. synchronisation with palm devices

  84. Definitely could use a way to see results in whatever order I choose, so I can order by date or by topic.

Speaking of which, IIRC Google uses the date the page was indexed by Google as the date of the page. Would be great to have the date the page was created or last updated.

  85. Add Tasks and to do's on Google Calendar! I know you are in development, but was wondering if there are any dates that this is to be completed, updating my systems now and this will influence my decision.

    2. Browser sync that just works (Firefox <-> Google Account) A better version would sync
i Firefox bookmarks to the Google Books Marks
ii Firefox Passwords etc sync to google account
iii Firefox plugins sync through Google Account

    3. Easy upload for docs into Google Docs

    4. Support for alternatives to HTML as format for Google Docs. eg. OpenOffice Docs stored as OpenOffice Docs and not converted to the internal format yet still editable. This would mean I would feel confident about uploading format sensitive documents such as my resume!

  115. Sorry everyone. My finance gadgets are temporarily unavailable. Maybe new version coming in a few weeks.
this is a lot of BS
if google wants to run an operating system leave your hands off stuff that works
'sorry' doesn't cut it with me when i add things to my desk top if your revising the gadget let the old one run till you get the new one working ,,,just dont change it in the middle of the road and say your sorry,,, maybe Yahoo has a better idea ?

  117. The Grand Central service is awesome. When will it finally be open for new users again? I need that service badly.

Also, I would be even further convinced on the all-inclusive Google services if Google were to offer texting from my Gmail account. I know text widgets exist that can be integrated into iGoogle, but I want one integrated with gmail. I also want to be able to say what number it was from and RECEIVE text messages. Thanks google!

  118. I wish the Google wish list had a feature to let others know if an item has been purchased for me via my wish list. The potential problem is that if someone buys me a gift from the list, there is no way to notify others that the item has been purchased. This could result in duplicity in gifts. Maybe a purchased list that others can see but that I can opt of seeing. Yeah, it would take discipline on my part, but I could do it :)

  120. Hello Google.
I would like to see all of the Google features integrated into Google Chrome.
    Example:
Gmail within Chrome interface along with google bookmarks, notepad, Picasa, Documents all in one place under one customizable Chrome interface.

It's more then possible and it's the way I see the future of the web based OS environment should be.

WHY SETTLE FOR JUST A BROWSER?

  127. I'd like the google main search to provide an area in the preferences where I can add/remove web sites that I do not want included in my searches... rather than have to include them in the search string. For example, when I search for help with .NET programming I get a dozen or so links to experts-exchange.com, which is accurate but I'm never going to pay to use their site so i'd rather it didn't come up for me.

    ReplyDelete
  128. As in AOL and others you can add word you use often to the dictionalry.
In GMAIL this is not possible? Or does someont know something I don't?

Next) at the top and arrange for the "Next" link to land in the same spot each time. if you do a lot of image searching, you know how painful it is to have to scroll down, find the "Next" link, mouse to it, and click. could even be a "preferences" setting.

  137. What really frustrates me is not being able to have two unconnected messages open simultaneously. Sometimes I want to be able to refer to a message from person A when I am writing to person B. It seems I always have to save the draft of message B then go back to the inbox to find and open message A, and then close it again before reopening message B. In Yahoo mail is is easy since each message opens up in its own tab. In most ways I prefer gmail. Can this feature not be added in some way.
    Thanks

  138. Folders, nested folders, and tabs in Gmail. Please! Please! Please! I would love to switch from yahoo but I must have folders. : )

    ReplyDelete
  139. @Anonymous above:

    1. Yahoo Mail doesn't support nested folders, just simple folders.
    2. Gmail's labels are more flexible than folders and you can treat them as folders, if that's what you want. Select a message and choose "move to [label]" and that equivalent to Yahoo's folder management (there's no drag&drop in Gmail yet).
    3. Gmail has folders, but they're called labels. The same message can be placed in multiple folders at the same time, but nobody forces to do that.

  144. It's Now 2009 & We NEED a Drastic change - We NEED Google!!
Since Google is so loved, for many reasons, I think their next big step should be to break the current ISP's to pieces & shock them totally! ... How?, easy, Gmail offers me 2Gb-7Gb of space, so we know Google has the space, so how about Google becoming the BIGGEST player, esp in Australia, by offering... wait for it... ''100% FREE ADSL, ADSL2+, CABLE, etc (at whatever is the fastest each persons Exchange can do -REGARDLESS of whether it's a Telstra DSLAM or not-) with an UNLIMITED Download/Upload Limits'' !!! They have the knowledge, they have the equipment capacity to do heaps. I'm not talking of totally free, because to be fair, I think that the LEFT 3/4 (75%) would be free for us to use, but in exchange the RIGHT 1/4 is for ''Google Powered Ads''.
I personally think it's a disgrace what's offered in Australia & especially shockingly dishonest plans like (ADSL2+, OnPeak 5Gb, OffPeak 100Gb, $40/month + bundle phone) when there's no way to achieve the 20Mbps in Truth AT YOUR DOOR & any poor bugger who does get stuck into the net for learning videos etc CAN bust through the OnPeak limit easily in a month.

    WE DESIRE & DESERVE BETTER!
    WE DESERVE & WANT GOOGLE!!
PLEASE, OH PLEASE blow these crooked ISP's apart.

    Sorry for the rant.

  145. A Speech Synthesis created strictly by Google Labs that loads inside a web page. It would automatically detect the user who is viewing the content and if a man, it would switch to either a male tone or female depending on choice. It would give users a more comfortable approach of reading web pages and perhaps, you might just create the application itself to read the full page and its contents to help blind people gather a sense of what each article is about. You would of course have to teach your voice program to ignore tags, html and other scripts away from actual dialog. Now wouldn't that put a spike in little billy's hat trick?

I think Firefox should disappear and I believe it will, once Google updates Chrome to be better, etc. People may switch. Who would want a lot of gizmos and gadgets? Use Chrome, you'll like it.

I switched from Firefox to Chrome. :-)

I don't have to worry with a lot of extensions, addons, etc. I feel things like that should be options already in a browser.

  151. a better search function, Google's core: Sometimes I want to look for only one specific word and google looks for a bunch of things that 'look like it'. Whereas other times it doesn't find things coz I have not spelled my search exactly right.
Why is it that if I want to look for a possible emailaddress, it refuses to see the "@". Searches for 'name@' just delivers a search for 'name'. Why not a search function where it searches litterally exact for what you type in. No, putting it between brackets does not help.

Why is it that if I look for two words and I indicate I really want both words. google thinks that no doubt I must be interested in results that have only one of these words, or just one of these words that looks like it

  180. While Google is not known for its phone directories or individual searches, it is really the big kid on the block as far as information on the internet. This translates to copious information on people, addresses, and phone numbers and can be used to your advantage. While the Big G's scope is still unspecialized for people search, we do recommend that you consider other alternatives searches, as a free initial shot.
