Google Calendar Sync for BlackBerry

Synchronization is probably the most requested feature for Google Calendar and Google has finally done something about it. It's not quite what you would've expected, but it's still a promising start. Google Sync is an application that lets you synchronize your Blackberry's calendar with Google Calendar.

"Using your BlackBerry smartphone's native calendar, you can now access your Google calendar even when you don't have network coverage and be alerted for upcoming appointments with sound or vibration. Your Google Calendar stays synchronized whether you access it from your computer or your phone. You can add or edit entries right on your BlackBerry smartphone or on your Google Calendar on the web."

The application should be available at http://m.google.com/sync if you visit the page from your Blackberry's browser. According to Google Mobile Blog, it supports Google Apps accounts.

This week, Google launched a mobile package of applications for Blackberry and a unified interface for iPhone. Google really tries to build solid mobile offerings, but only Google Maps is available for the most important mobile platforms. Hopefully, Google Sync will be released for other platforms and it will synchronize your contacts as well.

  1. Here's hoping they manage a sync utility for OS X. Spanning Sync continues to be buggy and slow -- maybe Google could do it better.

  2. I was so excited to see this that I immediately downloaded and starting playing with it. So far, the results haven't been awesome.

It brought down everything from Google to my BlackBerry, but practically nothing went the other way. The only events that went back to Google were new events that I created for testing. The older events never synced. So, it looks like it will be great for here on out, but things that I already have in my calendar don't seem to be getting added to Google.

  3. I just hope this is the beginning of something bigger... I badly need to sync with SFDC, iCal, etc...

  4. I actually have a question. I have a few calendars on my Google calendar page. Only 2 are downloading to my BB. Any suggestions? Thanks, Suzanne

  5. I am sure they won't offer this for Treo owners either, just like everything else.

  6. @Chuck Steel:
I'm having the same problem. Only new events on my BB are going to GCal. Unfortunately I haven't been u sing GCal so I don't have anything in there for it to sync the other way.

    Is this a bug?

    ReplyDelete
  7. According to the help center, it doesn't seem to be a bug.

"Google Sync is a BlackBerry client that downloads Google Calendar events onto your BlackBerry, and uploads Calendar events from your BlackBerry (two-way synchronization over the air)."

"Google Sync is configured to synchronize with the default calendar of your Google Account. You can select other calendars to be downloaded as well, but you can't add events to these calendars from the handheld."

    ReplyDelete
  8. How do you select other calendars to be downloaded?

  9. I downloaded this app to my Curve - gCal informed me that "Your version of BlackBerry OS requires a small patch to be a applied before Google Synch can work correctly"

It directed me to a blackberry.com directory that no longer exists (www.blackberry.com/calenderpatch2007

    Disappointing

  10. Double check the URL for a typo... I downloaded the patch fine from my Curve.

  11. What I'm trying to do is sync my Outlook with my Blackberry and my Blackberry with Google Calendar. I can not seem to get the calendar entries on my Blackberry from Outlook to sync with Google.

Is there something I can try?

    ReplyDelete
  12. Cool Breeze - Try plaxo. You can synch Outlook to Plaxo and then Plaxo to Google and it is two-way. I use this to sync Google & iCal.

Suzanne - Load the Google Sync app then click for the menu. You'll see an options setting. Click on that. It will show your calendar. Click on that and it will show you all the calendars you have. It's non-obvious, but you can add multiple ones from there.

  14. Google just keeps on giving this holiday season. First they give us the new home page for iPhone users and now Google calendar syncing to Outlook via Blackberry - because that's what this update really is. Thank you Google!

P.S. Google - I'd really like the rest of the prize so I can sync my Outlook back to Google calendar.

  15. I want to sync Google Calendar with my N81. GooSync doesn't have N81 but I managed to do away by selecting E65. But, I can't do it second time and it always shows me System Error.

I hope Google will come up with something to sync Calendar with my Nokia.

  16. I can't make it work with my BlackBerry Pearl 1800 on T-Mobile. I get "Login failed, due to network problems, please check your settings." Any hint?

  17. Great! Do you plan to release a Symbian UIQ3 version for this sync tool :)

  18. I wonder if anyone can help.

I have downloaded and instaled the Google sync software to my BBerry 8800 (connected to T-Mobile in the UK) but I am getting a 'Login failed. Your phone does not support end-to-end secure connections. In order to protect your data Google sync cannot be used at this time'.

  19. Works great on a 8703e from Verizon. I'd been using a combination of funabol and scheduleworld - hopefully this can replace that old solution.

  20. Cool Breeze - You're welcome - my pleasure.

For those of you interested in the multi-calendar sync, I wrote up a quick + dirty tutorial

  21. Thank you Rahul! It works GREAT now. Does anyone know if this is available for the iPhone?

  22. I am also having the same issue - NOTHING from Blackberry is going to Google Calendar. Without this feature, the sync is *COMPLETELY USELESS* to me - and it sounds like others as well.

    What gives?

    ReplyDelete
  23. Working perfectly here, on a Blackberry 8830. Multiple calendars, successful upload of events newly created on the Blackberry side, the works. The only limitation appears to be that I can only create new events on the Blackberry in my "primary" calendar, not in the other calendars I subscribe to and to which I have write permission.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Ahh. That's the issue - it only uploads *new* events, not existing ones. That's unfortunate given that many months in my bberry and lots of reoccuring events - none of which will ever get tranfered.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I downloaded it to my pearl right away. It seems to do a great job copying from Google to my pearl, but not vice versa. Hopefully, this is something they are already working on!

    ReplyDelete
  26. this app is awesome (I figured out the issue from yesterday.)

For those of you wondering why there isn't BB --> gcal xfer, it could be b/c the default period is 8 weeks (this can be changed in options for up to 24 weeks)

So if events aren't appearing after the transfer, it could be due to their landing outside of the that window.

  27. I'm getting the same error as Mike ...

"Your phone does not support end-to-end secure connections. In order to protect your data Google sync cannot be used at this time"

Is this a network setting we can change on the BB or is it network specific?

  28. I have Blackberry 8320 from T-mobil, I don't have a data plan, Installed google calender sync using wi-fi, now when i try to sync i get the same problem as mike :

  29. Brilliant application - but with one caveat - it needs something to allow us to upload all our existing Blackberry calendar information!!

I can understand that only uploading new events is probably good for data usage, but I've got tonnes of events and recurring meetings that need uploading. Please help!!

  30. The is the first time I've been able to sync my blackberry without any systemic issues. It worked terrifically. Not only did it sync my google calendar, but it allowed my lotus notes calendar at my corporate headquarters to upload what I broght over from the google calendar. 2 birds 1 stone trick..

    ReplyDelete
  31. Works awesome - just installed it. I have an 8310 Curve and everything worked flawlessly.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Why does gsync only allow a 24 week sync? In google calander - I have entered events after 24 weeks and when I'm out at a meeting, I won't be able to tell people if I'm busy that day because it falls out of the 24 week range? This could hurt...

  35. If google would add two way iCal support ala WebDAV that would solve all of my syncing issues. A lot of us thought they'd never add IMAP to gmail so who knows... While they're at it, I'd also really love to see some way to synchronize contacts other than a manual export->import.

  36. the maximum 24 week sync is killing me.. anyone else? why not just make it 1 year?

  37. Love the New Google map works great with Thunderbird as well. It sync great the other day now I am having troubles with it, if a make a new appointment it well sync with my BB but then it gets erased from my blackberry, or if I make A new appointment on my Google calender it will not sync with my blackberry

    ReplyDelete
  38. Here's an interesting Google Sync side effect.

I'm still getting paper bills through my carrier (AT&T) so I can expense them. Since I installed Google Sync using automatic syncs, my bill is huge!

The sync occurs once every 10 minutes, which generates about 3 pages of data xfer items per day. I'll soon be getting those boxed phone bills that the iPhone users were complaining about.

I'm recommending those of us getting paper bills turn off automatic Google Sync updates.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Nice observation eggo. Syncing my blackberry every 10 minutes with sync reminds me of my windows mobile blackjack checking every email every 15 minutes... my battery lasts only a fraction of its normal life when it's on auto sync. No more auto sync for me.

    ReplyDelete
  40. To resolve the "Your phone does not support end-to-end secure connections. In order to protect your data Google sync cannot be used at this time" error:

Add your carriers TCP settings to your device.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I've got it installed on a BB Curve 8310 (AT&Tingular) and it's also bringing stuff down from GCal just fine, but nothing I create or had on the device before then is going back to GCal. Kind of frustrating.

    ReplyDelete
  42. I have an 8830. Ran Google Sync. Here's what I get:

10% of your events have changed. ... (Deletes 85, Changes 0, Adds 12).

If I click Yes, I get a msg that almost all my Google calendar events will be deleted! If I click No, it asks me if I want to remove all my calendar events on handheld!

The exact same thing happens regardless if I do "Handheld Wins" or "Server Wins" in the options. So it's completely useless, and could actually make my life real miserable if, if I use this app at this point. Any suggestions on a different approach are greatly appreciated.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I am having a problem with google sync that Bill mentioned on 12/13. Events entered from my laptop into google calendar make it to my BB. But events entered in my handheld do not make it to my calendar. Any solutions?

    ReplyDelete
  44. Horrible!!! I entered recurring events in my BlackBerry. Then sync with google. Thereafter the events were somehow made into individual events and could no longer be edited as a group. Somehow a Tues/Thurs is now Mon/Wed and a Wednesday event is now on Tuesdays!!!

Another problem I've discovered is after March 9, 2008 when we switch to daylight time, after syncing with Google, all events after March 9th have been moved an hour later in my calendar!!!! WTF! Now technically this is correct since BlackBerry only give us the option "Pacific Time (-8)", but not PDT, so I cannot change it to the correct timezone it will be in the future, but assume Blackberry would do this for us on March 9th. So, now whenever I want to look at what I'm doing after March 9th, I have to remember Google moved all my appointments an hour later and hope it will magically all be better after March 9th!!

    How do I uninstall?

    ReplyDelete
  45. I am using Google Sync for the Blackberry which is also syncs to
Outlook (via a corporate BES). In Google Sync, you can set the number
weeks the calendar syncs up (8 weeks up to 24 weeks). If I schedule
an appointment outside of the Google Sync Window using my Blackberry
or Outlook, after a few minutes, the appointment gets deleted from
    both the Blackberry and Outlook.

For example, to start with, I had my Google Sync window set for 8
weeks. I tried to schedule my vacation in June which was about 16
weeks out. Every time I entered the appointment, using Outlook (syncs
to my Blackberry automatically & then syncs to Google Calendar from
the Blackberry) it would disappear after a few minutes. Once I
changed the Google Sync window to 24 weeks, the disappearance stopped.

This is a serious problem because it means I can't ever schedule
appoints further in advance than the 24 weeks that Google Sync allows
without it mysteriously disappearing by itself.

Who do I need to send this bug report to so it can get fixed? It is
    very repeatable.

  46. I'm a big fan of many google applications and this application is great in concept but is also currently a disaster. I'm a very surprised that Google suggested that it was ready to work with a BB. It doesn't register existing appointments from your Blackberry when you initiate use, only ones added after (you can import from outlook, but this doesn't work for recurring appointments). All of the comments regarding problems with recurring appointments are accurate. Also, all of my all day events were turned into events starting at 4pm and ran til 4pm the following day. Not the best experience.

    ReplyDelete
  47. does google test it's software before release or is that what users are for now? any responses or apologies from google? feels very microsoft like.

    ReplyDelete
  48. It's true. It doesn't transfer existing BB appointments to Gcal. Seems to work the other way though. Not much use if it isn't reliable.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Messed up my callendar horribly. Does not sync, and worse, I was getting content Protection in place of my meetings. Also, even worse, it deleted my outlook entries that were created in Outlook

    ReplyDelete
  50. After I installed Google Sync, it worked with BlackBerry Curve fine... but when I sync to my Outlook, it deleted all my calendars. why???? why???
    I am pissed now!!!

    ReplyDelete
  51. I set up a repeating event on my BB and it transferred automatically to GCal - except that about six weeks out the time changes by 1 hour (moves forward) for the event. Is this a timezone thing. I'm sure my Calendar is set to GMT.

    ReplyDelete
  52. this is pathetic - I wish I'd read all of this last week. I had no experience with Blackberry, but my boss asked me to set his new one up. We use Google Apps, so the G-stuff available for Blackberry was exciting.

Two problems so far: the Gmail app only works with real Gmail accounts, our custom domain does not work, and, more importantly, the calendar syncing is still terrible... downstream from the web calendar seems OK, but upstream didn't work at first, until I uninstalled and reinstalled Google Sync, but then it doesn't upload sync any existing events (doesn't tell you that, either), just new events. Plus existing events synced down from the web calendar are now duplicated.
And if that weren't bad enough, events are now disappearing at random from the web calendar, presumably every time it syncs.

    WHat the heck, Google?

    ReplyDelete
  53. Is there a way to color code different calendars? Staff calendar is different than event calendar? Appears beautifully in google calendar but not on device

    ReplyDelete
  54. Terrible!!! This completely hosed my BB calendar in three ways:

    1) After initial install, all of my BB calendar events suddenly became un-viewable. I got an error message instead, saying "This even has been externally deleted. Viewer will automatically close." Upon restart of my BB, my calendar was *blank*!!! WTF?!

    2) OK, so after laboriously re-entering my entire calendar into the BB, I open up GCal on the web and find that it's mis-recorded every single one of my recurring all-day calendar events. I'm in the Pacific timezone and it looks like all-day events were sync'ed into GCal as GMT events -- they're all one day ahead of where they should be at 4pm. 8 hours ahead!!! What kind of stupid "sync" product doesn't compensate for TIMEZONES!!??

    3) Argh. To add insult to injury, GCal has turned all my recurring events (dailies, weeklies, and annuals) into INDIVIDUAL events and re-synced them back onto my Blackberry that way!! So, all those recurring events that I just hand-entered into the Blackberry have now been replaced with individual events ON THE WRONG DAYS (#2 above).

This software is complete and utter crap. Beta indeed. Humph. User beware!

I love the concept of sync'ing BB to GCal, but I've learned an important lesson: my calendar is way to important to me to experiment with beta software like this!

    ReplyDelete
  55. I have 9 calendars on Google Cal but can only import default calendar (which I hardly use!).. tried to look for other calendars on BB but no other calendars come up for me to select!!

    ReplyDelete
  56. Suzanne, on the bb going into calednar, select google sync select the menu button, then options, go to the bottom of the screen where it says sync these calendars. You can then select that entire section and it brings you to a page that says my calendars. check the boxes for the calendars you want to sync.

    ReplyDelete
  57. This is nice to have utility and really works well. I enjoy my BB and the sync comes handy with EC.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Glad I read these posts - I'm having a problem with recurring items scheduled on my desktop outside the GSync 24 week window just like zoidberg. I schedule them outside that 24 week window (25 weeks let's say - they exist on my desktop - and then when it syncs - they get transferred to the google calendar - but then are deleted off my desktop (Notes) calendar... I thought the problem was a Notes issue - but now see it is my own doing for using Gsync...

    ReplyDelete
  59. I am not sure what is going on with Gsync and my BB. I have the Pearl 8100. I have tried downloading it a total of 4 times each time with no luck. The problem seems that it tries to sync with my Calendar and BB. When the sync is finished nothing has been transfered either way. I am not sure what is going on any help would be greatly appreciated.

  60. I had the same problem, google sync deleting appointments from my BB. Deleted google sync. How that solves it. Amazed that google distributed such buggy software.

  61. Does anyone know a way to manually sync your GCal to your blackberry WITHOUT having a data plan/internet on your cell phone?? I prefer hooking my USB up to my cell and computer (logged in) and doing it that way. Any ideas/programs?

    ReplyDelete
  62. I too am having he problem of events created on my blackberry outside of the sync window getting automatically deleted with a cancelation notice going out to the invitees. This only seems to happen for events created on the Blackberry.

I sync with Lotus Notes by only through Blackberry Desktop Manager. I use BIS.

On events created using Lotus Notes, invites outside of the window disappear initially during the Gsync process. But when I resync the BB using BB Desktop Manager, the events reappear on the BB calendar outside of the Gsync window.

Lesson learned - Do not create invites on the BB until Google fixes it's bug.

Ideally, I want to use the Gsync to sync only my family group calendar with my BB. I wish their was a way to disable the Primary Calendar from syncing!

Once the bug is fixed, this program will be much more useful!!!

    ReplyDelete
  63. Google sync looked like my solution. My enterprise uses NotifyLink which is a complete disaster as a synching product to Groupwise. I synched to Outlook, exported my calendar as a csv file to get all my current entries into Google calendar. Loaded Google sync to my ATT 8800, I was a pig is S _ _ _.

Then… I realized that not all the entries that I was creating were synching. I gave my secretary full editing permission to my calendar (and asked her to keep a record of all changes while I test the syncing.) The initial tests passes. When we moved to “production”, I saw that some appointments that were created on Google calendar never synched to my BBerry, and some from my BBerry would appear on the calendar and then vanish from my BBerry.

Oh well, Sync needs to go back to Google labs. it’s not ripe yet…

    ReplyDelete
  64. Google Sync is really nice, but they need to integrate the contacts sync as well. I want to have a single collection of people I talk to that is seamless across all the ways I use Google services. Gmail, GCalendar, GTalk, I want it to be all in one spot!

    Great start thou guys!

    ReplyDelete
  65. Google Sync is awesome! I really hope Google comes out with an address book sync as well.

    ReplyDelete
  66. im sorry, google sync is not awesome. You cannot sync things in your calendar after 120 days (or something close to that) how can you carry around a blackberry and not be able to check what you are doing in 6 months from now?

I used gcal sync for a few months when there was nothing else available. I used to use outlook only, but I've always liked gcal because its on the web. well now gcal has an outlook sync program (link on top right up gcal window). so my outlook, gcal, and blackberry have finally all synced.

this gcal sync is useless unless you can sync 6 months, 1 year, or forever in advance. a 4 month sync? VERY UNPROFESSIONAL. i'm beginning to think the gcal programmers have given up and are already working on something else...

    ReplyDelete
  67. Google Sync was a disaster for me. Recurring meetings were automatically deleted. Meetings that orginated from other parties and were then updated (new time or date) didn't update in Outlook.

I have since disabled Google Sync and everything is back to normal. I think it has great potential, but I can't believe Google released a product with so many bugs.

The incredibley stupid technical support folks at Verizon referred me to a GOOGLE SEARCH to scope the problem.

So far I have not heard back from the Google App helpline folks so I cannot yet add them to the Incredibley Stupid list.

And yes, I have already added myself to the list of incredibley stupid for going with Verizon who has locked down all GPS functionality that every other provider includes for free so that they can charge an extra $10 per month on the VZ Navigator app.

Answer: go to Google Sync on your BB and select OPTIONS. Scroll all the way to the bottom where it says SYNC THESE CALENDARS and click (it's not intuitive at first). After clicking, check off the calendars that you want to sync.

Note: that only the primary calendar is synced both ways on the Blackberry. All others only appear on your BB and are sync'd one way from the Google server.

  78. I've been having problems with my Google Sync since May 2, 2008. The only way to get my calendar to sync is to delete Google Sync, reset my Blackberry, reinstall Google Sync, and then sync the calendar. The Automatic sync will work for a day or two and then just stop working. If I try to manually sync with "Sync Now", the screen says "Starting Sync" and nothing happens. I can leave it like this for hours and it doesn't sync.

I have another problem that seems to occur with my gmail to the blackberry. I'm getting a security certificate error. If I choose continue, it seems to be fine. I don't know how to get this error message to dissappear. Even choosing "Trust Certificate", the error message comes back.

What do you think is happening?

  80. Hey guys, I just picked up the Verizon curve and used sync for google calendar. It worked great the first time but now it doesn't work at all and my events on google calendar have been deleted. Anyone else with this issue?

    ReplyDelete
  81. Hey Amanda and Liz,

I started having the exact same problems as you guys at around the same date. I have the BB Curve 8310 on AT&T.

My theory is that the Google Certificate expires after a couple of days and the Sync no longer works (no idea what changed on 5/2/08 to make this issue appear). For me, just taking out the battery and restarting the BB made it work again for a few days, but it was definitely annoying.

The only thing I was able to do was go to Options -> Security -> Key Stores and set "Certificate Status Expires After" to Never and "Accept Unverified CRLs" to Yes.

Then I went to Options -> Security -> Certificates and "trusted" anything with "google" in it.

No idea if this actually fixed the problem or not, but ever since then I've turned off the automatic updating and been able to update my calendar manually without any hang-ups. Not nearly as good, but at least I don't have to restart my BB every couple of days to make it work. Haven't tried setting it back to automatic updating, so not sure if that messes things up again or not.

    Hope this helps.

  83. After struggling with this for a few weeks now, I've figured it out thanks to the posts above.

To download multiple calendars to your mobile device:

    1. download http://m.google.com/sync on your mobile device.
    2. sync your primary calendar
    3. under settings, go to "Sync These Calendars" and click all the ones you want.

    DONE.

  84. Syncing with outlook doesnt work either. It tries to delete all Google calendar events that aren't in my outlook calendar every time. I just wanted this to upload events from Outlook calendar into Google Calendar (which i otherwise love). Unfortunately, Google has decided that if an event's not in my Outlook calendar, its not worth keeping...

  85. This is a peculiar problem; my google sync has worked fine since i´ve had my blackberry and now it´s not able to sync at all. It says that the sync is running in the background when i tryed to reset.. (if it is then it´s been taking hours.) Thus, i´ve taken the battery off and a reboot has done the trick. If anyone finds out a proper cure please post!... cheers, s.

  86. Thanks to this board for helping me fix a sync problem that was making me debate whether I would keep the blackberry or not.

Now that I've synced multiple calendars, does anyone know if google sync can sync to multiple programs - like blackberry and outlook at the same time? I like to have backups, and find outlook is a good use on some occasions.

    Thanks!

I've tried to follow Eugene advice, but got a problem with the password of the key store.
Does anyone know how can I find this password (doesn't match with the password of the phone, and I can't remember to have ever entered it).
    Thanks.

  89. I'd like to throw my 2 cents into this discussion as well. I've been using the gSync for my calendars and absolutely LOVE IT! But now I'd really like to see Google sync my contacts. That would make everything so much easier. I'm a very heavy Plaxo user for my contacts, but I'll be perfectly honest -- if Google gets contacts syncing with the BB, I'll drop Plaxo like a diseased rodent! (Well, okay... maybe I'll still use Plaxo to keep things up-to-date...) But I'm guessing it's a race to see who'll sync contacts with BBs first -- Google or Plaxo. I just hope SOMEONE does it soon!

  91. Dorian, I have the exact same problem that you have with your calendar sync. When I first download the system onto my BB Curve it worked perfectly! Now, not so much... Whenever I add something to my Calendar on my BB Curve and go to sync the device it tells me that it syncs the new event but it does not show up on my Outlook Calendar at all and visa versa. Very frustrating! If anyone has a solution for this, please help!!!

  92. OK, say I have 5 google calendars under the one account that I share with 3 other people. I have read / write access to these calendars, and the others have read only access.

I download google sync to tool to my blackberry 8310 curve. I link it to my google account, go to options tick all 5 calendars so I can now see all my calendars & dates on my BB, and everything seems good so far.

I decide to enter a new date on one of my calendars via google calendars online. I sync with my blackberry and all is good... I can see the date appear on my BB calendar.. still happy.

Then I am on the road, and need to update one of my calendars via my BB. Here's the problem. How am I able to select WHICH calendar I want to update. It seems Google will only update my default calendar... is there a way to choose which calendar I want to update from my BB?

    Would appreciate the help!

  98. We're disappointed currently with this feature. After having a whole calender wiped out from treo calender software, we thought with google sync on the blackberry curve we would be able to send events back and forth without using a port. It seems like a wonderful feature and looks promising in the future, however, after trying to start a whole new calender within a week it had deleted most of my events and changed the times of the rest. More information lost with me. Apparently I'm not the first to have this problem. I wouldn't recommend while they're having this problem to use the "sync" feature, for it deletes off both the online calender and the blackberry calender is synced to.

Now every event is repeated on both personal and work calenders on my BB. It recognizes its incorrect saying it has been deleted on the calender online.

  102. Typically love the google products such as picasa and maps. But I do work for a large law firm where we use a Enterprise Blackberry server in combination with Lotus Notes version 6. Google sync is a true disaster, so far I found 2 people who installed this program on their Blackberry and both of them called in informing IT that calendar entries on the Blackberry and in Lotus Notes were disappearing. I would die to hear how they explain this one to the customer, "sorry but google ate the homework, I mean our appointment". We are now thinking about sueing Google. Ok, I'm just kidding about that but this product is very ungooglish! Shame!

  110. I finally stumbled upon the solution to the problem I was having getting my events to upload from my BB (8330) to Google Calendar, & I thought I'd share it here.

    Try this:

Go your calendar & open the menu, and select Google Sync. On the Goolge Sync page, open menu & select Options.

On the Options screen, under "Sync these calendars", highlight "Default Calendar" and press enter.

This brings up a screen that says "Select Calendars" at the top. Right under that, it will say "Add new handheld events to".

If there is a blank space next to the word "to", place your cursor in the space & hit enter. This should bring up a menu with the choices "Default Calendar" and "None."

Select "Default Calendar" and you should be good to go.

When I first found this page I thought the sentence "Add new handheld events to" was referring to the list underneath the "My Calendars" heading, and I didn't realize there was supposed to be a selection where that blank space was.

    Anyway, I hope that helps.

1)deleted things off my BB and off my Gmail calendar online(I don't use Outlook) to try and delete unneeded items

2)I've tried syncing over and over again but my BB won't update with the correct info

    3) I took off the auto sync feature and set the BB to manual sync only, then tried to resync just the handheld to delete all handheld calendar events

I want to sync to each one, but I can only seem to get it to sync to the home email address. I reinstalled Sync on the Blackberry and it is asking me for an email address at startup - I'm afraid that it will only allow me to sync to that one. Any workarounds to this? Once saved, I did a sync on my blackberry and I now see both accounts listed there.

  124. You still can't seem to add events to your BB that sync to anything but your default calendar. It syncs all calendars TO the BB, but only the default calendar FROM the BB. Then you have to go in to Google Calendar and change the event to the correct calendar manually. Not a big deal, but definitely not the best solution. When you add an event, you can't select any of the Google Calendars besides the default.

    ReplyDelete
  125. I thought it was me until I found this discussion list. I've had many of the same problems with my 8703e and Google calendar. I re-entered recurring appointments in my BB (because Google will only sync those added after the sync software is installed) and the dates were all off and changed from recurring to individual events. Also: All my appointments after the change to daylight savings time on March 8 shifted an hour. How hard is it to write some code to account for this? It would be nice if Blackberry and Google were talking to each other, which apparently isn't high on their list of priorities.

I always trusted Google before this because they have never let me down in any way. I am discusted right now. If anyone can maybe help me I will take what I can get.

    ReplyDelete
  131. Whatever you do, don't use this if you are a corporate BB user. BES will conflict, causing the "content protection enabled" to appear where your calendar data used to be.

Worse, even though I uninstalled Google Sync, there's still that option in my calendar. The app is gone, but some hook still remains -- and I keep losing crucial meeting data (I telecommute, and my primary lifeline to meeting times has now been cut).

Perhaps a corollary to "Do No Evil" could be "Don't Break Stuff"?

    ReplyDelete
  132. I tried this for a while and was happy until some of my calendar events went missing. Turns out the sync was deleting events outside its date range. This app is useless unless Google can provide a "destruction free" mode which promises not to auto-delete anything.

  133. Sorry, but it's funny how disgusted/furious/frustrated/disappointed everyone gets when they find a bug in their *free* software. I understand wanting to report the bug to Google, but do we really need to be so upset?

    ReplyDelete
  134. I was thinking the same thing, Jason. People need to remember that Google is doing this for free. Install the software and if you find bugs, report them. Simple as that. Google could be like Microsoft and charge you for fixes/upgrades to their already buggy, poorly written software. There are lots of open source applications out there for the Blackberry, too. You should check them out.

    ReplyDelete
  135. Jason and Chad - I believe the issue isn't that people get angry or frustrated with a free app, but more at the fact of losing precious data (calendar and contact information that gets lost, can't necessarily be recovered and could even affect business). That being said, imagine how angry people would be if they had to pay for the app!

    ReplyDelete
  136. I lost much data to Google Sync. I now employ 2 strategies to minimize the losses:

    (1) Set Sync to MANUAL - do not let it automatically update. On Automatic, the losses were extensive, or else, it doubled all my appts!

Yes, I reported it, and received EXACTLY ZERO feedback from Google.

    (2) Make a backup copy of your calendar. calendar.google.com, display ALL participating calendars, then SETTINGS - CALENDARS - EXPORT CALENDARS (under "Create a new calendar") and place the exported copy with a name that includes the current date somewhere on your main computer.

Frequency of backups depends on your tolerance ot redoing work: If you are ok redoing a week's worth of appts, take the backup every 6 days. If you cannot take more than a day's loss, back up every 23 hours.

Someone may even come up with a nice little script to do it! Let me know please...

Otherwise it will use the default method and you risk losing data.

What if I don't want to Google? Buy an iPhone or gPhone? What if I HAVE to have a BlackBerry (for work duh) and can't get one becuase my operator doesn't sell them (Vodafone are you listening) - come ON Google. Don't be evil. Yeah. Right. 'Login failed. Your phone does not support end-to-end secure connections. In order to protect your data Google sync cannot be used at this time'

I am not bluffing, but looks like the hard reboot (take out the battery and put it back) of my blackberry did do the trick!

Here goes my story if you are interested:
Installed Google Sync. Got the above error while logging in (abc@gmail.com and password). Read posts. Called t-mobile support to ask about TCP configuration...in vain. No change made till now. Then, changed Permissions (Settings-Options-Advanced Options-Applications-Google Sync-Edit Permissions....under Interactions Section, I changed the last four to allow, allow, allow, prompt) but to no avail. I left working on Google Sync and started working with other applications on my BB. Slept. In morning when I opened BB, it forced me to choose Reset...donno what happened. Did that....looked like it did a reboot of the device. During the day I tried Google Sync again with no optimisum but to my great surprise, I was able to login to Google Sync.

You might anyways waste time reading 10s of posts...why not waste 3-4 minutes in doing a reboot of your device, it is worth trying.

Thank you guys above who suggested a reboot...I really thought you were jerks.

  158. BOTTOM LINE: Should never have been released to the public. It's beta at best. Has lots of bugs. It has different problems depending on the blackberry device you're using. As an IT development manager, I would be ashamed to have had this go out to my internal users, not to mention external customers. When I installed it on my 8330, it duplicated some contacts. It didn't delete others it should have. Updates were uncertain. It's a shame. Really wanted to use Google calendar and contacts as my base wherever I happen to be and have my blackberry synch up every so often so I have access to up to date contact and calendar information. Oh well. Will have to find another way.

I agree with the above comment. It SUCKS!!!

  165. I don't know why so many people are griping about problems with Google Sync. I have a Bold 9000 and have been using Gsync for quite a while now. Everything works beautifully. Items created on any of my Google Calendars sync to my BB, and items created on my BB sync to my default Google calendar. This is how it's supposed to function right now. After initially having a problem with duplicated contacts, that has since been resolved as well. Many of us are now submitting a feature request to have our multiple Google calendars sync with multiple BB calendars to preserve categories and color coding. We're also trying to get them to implement Task syncing as well since they launched the service.

Overall, though, Google has a solid sync product right now that does what it's supposed to do. It may take some tinkering and research to discover how to use it optimally, but that's a user issue, not Google's.

Firstly, Contacts need to be in My Contacts on Google for BB to pick up; Secondly, needed to tick, on the BB Google Sync Options, all appropriate objects to Sync - I forgot to tick the Calendr one;then Reset Calendr Sync on BB which asked if ok to remove BB entries; I said yes and now it Sync's with Google with no problems.

If you have key entries on BB then I would think it maybe better to backup on PC first and then restore from PC after resetting Cal Sync on BB.

Still have figured why BB Device Manager does not See Outlook 200? on PC, therefore wont sync with Outlook - but that's another story!

  169. The old addage "Never judge a book by it's cover" comes to mind. While I find value in Blogs I am glad I tried it for myself.

I had zero issues and am using the product without a hitch. I refuse to connect to my corporate BIS server (one I leave work that is it I am done) and by placing selected appointments into Google Calendar I can sync with my BB8310 and get the mandatory appointments.

Slown - this is a friggin' cellphone so who cares how fast or slow it is, as long as I get my reminder so I DO NOT miss a meeting I am happy.

I agree with many comments that Google should try and provide better products. However with open source you get what you pay for and in this case zero outlay is working pretty well. As Director of Change Management for a Fortune 100 I certainly understand the SDLC model, ITIL concept and this is still a beta. Don't like it either develop a better product or delete it. Thanks to all for your comments!

  170. LOOOOOOOOOOOVE this feature! due to all sorts of red tape policies around servers and security at my place of employment it's impossible to sync your MS Outlook calendar to your blackberry's. However, i've found that I can explort a csv file and upload that to google calendar and sync it! It's an extra step for me, but well worth it!

  171. I can't seem to get google sync to work. Anything I enter in Google will transfer to the Blackberry when I sync, however, the calender events on the Blackberry will not transfer to Google. Any ideas?

  172. Have the exact same problem as Scott above. Would appreciate the help if anyone knows the fix for this. I have the Curve 8320 if that matters. Thanks.

  173. I loved (past tense) Google Sync until I just upgraded to a TMobile BB8900. Contacts won't sync. TMobile tried sending service books, resetting host routing, etc. with no luck. I will ask for a new phone, but for those who don't understand the problems others are having, it could easily happen to you, too. Don't be so smug. My last Blackberry worked seamlessly with Google Sync; this one doesn't. There may be changes cell phone service providers are making in the OS to discourage free apps from working, or because they do not care whether they work or not.

  174. The contact sync works well -- once you figure out its quirks. The calendar doesn't work well, however. Apparently, it doesn't understand "relative dates," as they relate to the Blackberry calendar.

If you upload a recurring event from the Google calendar, the BB reads it as a series of single events. If you try to send a recurring event from the BB back to the Google calendar, Google doesn't see it at all. Google will read a non-recurring event that comes from the BB, however.

Workaround: Only upload recurring events to the Google calendar, and don't be surprised when they appear as single events in the BB. You can upload non-recurring events to either Google or the BB without any problem, at least not that I've found.

This is a major oversight on Google's part.

  175. To synchronize your Google calendar with Lotus Notes Calendar try AweSync beta: http://awesync.com
It is capable of syncing most of the event types, and you're welcome to participate in beta-testing.

  177. Just downloaded the google sync for my blackbery storm. Name and password are entered correctly, did it 2 times... It says that it is syncing... happens in less than 1 sec and nothing comes down. Any idea what I should do? Please respond to joseph.mckown@gmail.com

  178. Pearl 8100 user with Sync v0.5.15

As with many I'm having the problem of Google>BB = ok, BB>Google = no way.

I don't even appear to be getting the same menus under "Options" on Sync as others (eg. Anonymous said on August 20, 2008).

Can anyone help with BB>Google syncs?

  179. I'm having the same problem as Joe. Downloaded google sync for BB 8300 - multiple times now. Says it's sync-ing and that sync was successful-completed within a sec - but no info has been transferred. Any suggestions?

  180. Hello? Does anyone remember Palm solving this problem 15 years ago? Oh and then Microsoft resolved it again 10 years ago. I think the children at Google need adult supervision or they should not be allowed to play with grown up things like a Blackberry

  181. I just synced my google calendar and my BB calender on my 8530. This is so awesome, but I will add my voice to the request that the color coding for different calendars used in google be available in on the BB. Other than that- all is flawless. If your calendars aren't syncing correctly- try again because this worked perfectly for me.

  182. Help!! when I sync an even from calendar to my BB, it changes the time (the ate is ok). I'm looking at my g-mail calendar right now and it shows my event at 7pm, but when I look at my bb calendar it says 1pm. UG!

  183. Rubbish in today's techno world. On my Google calendar I have an all day event set from 03/02 to 06/02. When it syncs with my BB Bold, it changes the date to only 03/02. Birthday event on Google syncs as a non recurring event on BB. This 24 week max period is also no good.
If anyone can suggest a workaround I would be so grateful.

  184. It's hard to believe that this bug has not been fixed in over two years since the second-to-top comment. The real problem here is that Google has no apparent 1-800 support line. How obscenely unprofessional it is that they don't.

Or do they and I just don't know about it?

  185. Downloaded the sync for BB Curve. Got back my GCal entries on Net. Now I can sync my engagements without typing in BB. Thanks Google.

  186. I just tried it out yesterday. Same issues as 2 years ago:
Created a recurring all day Friday event on the blackberry and synched. It then changed the schedule of that event (on both the BB and GCal) to 5pm Thursday - 5pm Friday, and on the BB it had no knowledge of the series anymore, individual appts only. I tried created the recurring event on GCal instead and syncing down, which did fix the scheduling, but the BB still didn't know it was a series.

Now reading here about issues with time zone/DST, I'm afraid to use this product at all. I agree I can't get ANGRY about this free software, but it's pretty lame of Google to continue to distribute it with the same MAJOR problems that existed 2 years ago.

  187. It does not work on my BB Curve 8520.
When I try to install it after I enter email and password it says "Connecting to Google" and it freezes in this state!

  188. It definitely downloads my schedule from Google Calendar to my Blackberry but it doesn't work for the the opposite way. Disappointing!

  189. same here, it downloads the google calendar to the BB but only new events the other way around. Not good

  190. I just downloaded Google Sync to my Bberry Curve 8530. It brought over my Google calendar but started adding duplicates of every event. I got the message "Another sync client has been adding events to the Blackberry calendar, to avoid duplicates Google Sync will not keep these events up to date."

Anyone else get this? Any suggestions?

  191. @ Laura - I'm receiving the same message. I uninstalled and reinstalled Google Sync several times. I'm searching the internet for a solution and may need to try a 3rd party solution.

  192. Hi Laura & Anon I'm having similar issues with a Curve 3G. Either duplicates or erases my original google calendar (just erased everything for the 2nd time). Rather than rebuilding and have it erase again I'm searching for a 3rd party app. for an online calendar that I can sync down ONE WAY preferably to multiple blackberrys. Find anything that works? marja169@gmail.com

  193. Laura, I have the same issues. How do you uninstall the app?

  194. Laura i was having the same problem. Very very annoying. After Searching for a while i came across this great product called "bievo" check it out at www.mybievo.com what was great about it was that it was free for the first 30 days so if you dont like it you dont have to pay. believe me it worth buying i love it. i think it only costs 20 bucks or something like that

  195. Today I have concluded that BB Google sync is totally worthless. I had 1 appointment scheduled with a reminder for today, it morphed into 1750 entries in BB and Google calender and effectively killed my BB while I received reminders. I had to kill my BB calender data and also kill my Google calender. Forget about Google sync, it's not worth it.
