Delete Your Blog?

Delete Your Blog?

This will permanently delete your blog including all your posts. You can create another blog at this address using the Google Account you're currently logged in with, however, we can't restore your posts once you choose to delete your blog.

It's so easy to delete a Blogger blog: the delete button is easily accessible from the settings page and there's only one confirmation dialog. After you delete the blog, all the posts and comments disappear, but the blog's address instantly becomes available.

If you want delete a Gmail account, it's much more complicated. Google asks your password and it doesn't delete the account instantly. What's more, the address can't be reused and you won't be able to retrieve your messages.

For Google, deleting a blog is infinitely less important than deleting an email address, even though they're both ways to communicate with someone. Deleting a blog has many more side-effects for a bigger audience: broken links, broken hearts, less relevant search results, an entire context that disappears.

  1. Well, deleting an email account is different than a blog. If people that send you messages don't know that your account is gone, they might foolishly continue to send you messages.

There is also the issue of email accounts being attached to online services. What if you need an account password reset and the new password email goes to the email account that you deleted?

You really only need to worry about deleting a blog if its popular, but even if you sign up for one service with a certain email address, you still have to be careful about deleting that address.

    2. This is a smart blog. I mean it. You have so much knowledge about this issue, and so much passion. You also know how to make people rally behind it, obviously from the responses. How do i remove a website from google search results

  2. Correction... it is not the case that the address of a deleted Blogger blog becomes available for reuse. If you try to visit a deleted blog, you will see a message saying the opposite:

    http://deletedinprod.blogspot.com/

(This explicit messaging is a fairly new feature, but NOT a new policy.)

Likewise, if you visit a blog that has never been used, you'll get a message saying explicitly that the address is available. Currently, this works, although someone could claim it at any minute:

    http://ravendung.blogspot.com/

  4. They also have a seemingly odd way for dealing with people who switch to FTP publishing -- because they will free up their Blogspot domain, their help says, to be up for grabs by anyone else.

I beg to differ. I've got something approaching 1500 posts some of which I put a lot of work into. I rely mostly on Google to keep them backed-up etc (especially as they still don't have a one-click archival download process).

I really don't care how popular my blog is (or isn't). I shiver every time I see that delete blog button.

  6. Well that I think is due to just the number of useless blogspot blogs lying out there.

BTW, when did you shift over to firefox from Opera?

  7. @macbeach: There's a nice feature of WordPress that can import your entire Blogger blog complete with posts and comments. In a snap, that could be a good backup solution. I should probably set up WordPress on my personal server (I use it for development) and do just that.

I did a brief write-up of how impressed I was with WordPress' import functions; take your pick from my blog and CodingExperiments (the latter is run by possible248; I just guest-post from time to time).

Now to comment on this post. As others have mentioned, a blog usually doesn't mean anywhere near as much as an email address. With the new OpenID support coming (already in Draft), though, perhaps Google should make deleting a blog a bit more difficult. A lot of OpenID sites don't provide options to change your OpenID URL once you've signed up...

  8. Hi, Interesting thing happened to me when I deleted a Gmail Account. I had two windows of the IE opened. I used one window to delete the email and on the other window, I had the same gmail account open. Even after deleting the google account, I still could send and receive emails to/from the deleted email account until I signed out from that account.

  9. anonymous tried to test the database implementation of Gmail. It is easy to explain if you have basic knowledge of transaction of database.

Mr Anonymous had 2 connections to the database, which were associated 2 images of the same database. While one issued a command to delete account, the command was not yet committed, because there was another connection.

Anyway, I regard Blogger has given enough warning. After all, it is your decision to delete the blog. If you don't know what you are doing, you are going to blame nobody. If Blogger.com add more steps for deleting blog, those who know what they are doing will complain why blogger.com is so troublesome.

  10. Hi Andy, Thank you very much for the explanation. I was under the impression that even if I delete my gmail account, google is still keeping it. :) are they?

    ReplyDelete
  11. Hi there, I do not know why it is easier to delete blog rather than Gmail or Google account too? Can you explain

    ReplyDelete
  12. Gosh, this made me laugh in a twisted way, especially with the part where deleting a blog entails so much more: broken links, broken hearts, etc..

I could empathize with the pain of not being able to find a blog I normally read.. But it was just pretty funny to read that a broken heart could result from a blog being deleted.

I think that the thought that Gmail is still keeping people's accounts, even after deletion, would give anyone the creeps. But I did read somewhere that Google keeps a sort of cache for all its accounts, etc, for up to ten years. To the paranoid, it's time to say "yikes!" :D

As for the Google Account, well you may have so many Google services attached to it, so they are making things easier for you in case you go into a nihilistic moment and want to disappear from the face of the earth one moment, only to regret it later. :p

I also experienced that after blogspot blog deletion it is not available.
Any idea if domain is available after some time?

    Thanks

  14. I have a problem.. I deleted my Google Account and I ticked the box saying I wanted to delete my Blogger as well. But after I deleted it, I realized that the blog hasn't been deleted. So now I have no way to delete that blog since my Account is gone.

    What can I do?

  15. I have accidentally deleted my blog. I got the URL back and recreated the blog but all my posts are gone. Is there anyway to recreate the posts with the same post URLs?

    ReplyDelete
  16. I also deleted my Google account and ticked the box saying I wanted to delete my Blogger too, but guess what? My blog is still there.

How long will it take for Google to delete my blog after deleting my Google account?

    Thanks.

  17. Hi there,

Last year I deleted one of my blogs; www.foto-foob.blogspot.com.
But I've noticed that it hasn't gone off the internet yet. Now there
is some personal information on the site, but also some new spam posts
have been added. I don't like the thought that these two are now
linked. I would really like the site to be completely deleted. I've
contacted Blogger about this several times, and did not receive an
answer at all. I don't know what to do anymore about it, so I am
hoping someone here has a suggestion or 'the' answer.

How can I completely delete my blog, or the personal information that
    is still on it?

    Thanks in advance.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Well, since it is still accessible, either you did not delete it like you thought you did, as when it is truly deleted, a screen will come up saying 'this blog account has been deleted and is no longer accessible'. Or someone else has either hijacked your account or created a new one in its place to use for spamming.

I think anyone who believes the information they put online is naive. I think it no longer just for the paranoid, its already been on the news on TV that homeland security is keeping copies Myspace and Facebook accounts, why would one think that their email or blog accounts are not being saved.

I believe this is actually why when you delete your blog, it does not go back up to be reused. Because Google along with the government are having remain in a state where they can undelete it most likely for legal reasons, but for anything they want really.

1984 has already begun, probably back in 1984, and it was not a book about the USSR like everyone thinks, but a book about the USA. Big brother is watching, might consider keeping your thoughts to yourself...

As for me, along with my google and yahoo accounts, I have German and Russian email accounts, in hopes that maybe accounts in foreign countries are protected from the Americans rule. Probably just wishful thinking, heck probably all the governments of the world are collaborating to keep peoples information. So not just homeland security, but all databases tied together.

  24. There is no delete button for the blogspot a/o 3-5-09 1900 hours. I was allowed to delete "home" and was asked, before the two click process was completed, "really"?
I just read a few minutes ago that Google just received an abundant supply of "delete buttons" but how long it will take them to hook them all up is a mystery. I just wanted to free my domaine name which I should not have used. Good Luck to All.

  42. I want to delete a blog but I seem not to have permission to do it. I don´t know who or what it is that decided I do not have permission but the point is I was requested to delete the blog and I am only asking for permission to delete it or am requesting google.com to delete the blog.
I don´t know who or what is behind my inability to delete the blog but no available options are available for me as of present which can help me to delete the requested blogs.
That makes me feel that Microsoft should be contacted so that they can add blog removing software to their tools when they upgrade Internet Explorer and Mozilla firefox. It´s bad that the entire internet world has become aware of what appears to be the fact that the creators of the internet forgot to include clear history technology.
