Google Maps started to integrate some of the most popular mapplets and user-generated maps. When you search for a location (like Rome), you'll be able to see Panoramio photos, YouTube videos, places of interest, popular searches and maps so you can get a better sense of what to expect if you go there. As you zoom the map, the sidebar is updated to reflect your new location.
The feature is reminiscent of Flickr Places, but the map plays the role of placeholder for geotagged content.
It is looking like user generated mashups.

I believe pictures from Panoramio were being integrated into Google Earth before Picasa Web had geotagging... Hope they'll start using geotagged pictures from public Picasa Web albums soon as well!

ReplyDeleteyou can see geotagged pictures from public picasaweb albums, though it's a bit fiddly
go to maps.google.com, click on My Maps on the left
under 'Featured Content' tick 'Photos from Picasa Web Albums'
or go here & tick it http://maps.google.com/maps/mm?ll=53.95,-1.06&spn=0.0098,0.019&z=16
