Google Classic Plus

The new feature that lets you add a background image to Google's homepage has a name reminiscent of Microsoft: "classic plus". When you click on the link to iGoogle, there's an option to switch to the classic homepage. Now the classic homepage has an important feature that was only available in iGoogle: themes.

It will be interesting to see if Google adds more features from iGoogle to the "classic plus" homepage. Google could add some simplified gadgets that show if you have new messages in your Gmail inbox, new events in your Google Calendar agenda, gadgets for weather and news. Since Google only shows the search box and the two search buttons if you don't move your mouse, the gadgets wouldn't clutter the homepage.

  1. why would I stay on Google's homepage all the time? It is much easier to add Google's search box to other places than to add all other places to Google's homepage..

  3. Adding a customizable background to Google homepage is fine, but I don't want it to any farther. Part of what I love about Google is it's simplicity. Any else would take away from what makes Google, Google.

  4. It's not just the image that makes the Bing page interesting for me, but the interesting Q&A search terms. Daily there is a new picture, topic, and facts to learn.

I like being able to change my background on Google (customization and flexibility are nice), but it isn't the same experience at all.

I am also curious how Google plans on improving its user interface. Since I use iGoogle widgets for weather, news, and some core Google services I rarely, if ever, see the standard Google page. It would be nice if the functionality of iGoogle could be merged with the simplicity and clean look of the standard Google search page.
