Google's new UI is very similar to Bing Image Search's interface. It's not the first time when Google tries to hide image details. In 2007, Google launched an image search interface that only displayed information about a result when you hovered over an image, but a lot of users complained and the old interface has been brought back.

I actually prefer having the image's info visible. I think it's a time waster having to mouse over to get the info a user can get on a quick glance.

This thing will really provide a great ease for the people, its a lot easy that a thumbnail of image quickly appears as you move to the link rather than clicking the image and then enlarging the image from the main domain.
ReplyDeleteIt's definitely more useful (to me) when you can glance at the URLs or pixel data to get a feel for the type of website and general category of the image, i.e. scientific or just some random blog upload. This new approach is too dumbed-down and NOT an improvement. I can see it as an alternative, but it makes a poor default arrangement.
ReplyDeleteSurely Google understands that knowing the source of an image can be more important than just fitting more of them on a single page? The interface should be customizable for those who want either method at a given time, depending on the nature of their image search.

Also, the info about the image was useful, as someone said before - helped to see if the image was worth checking out at all.

ReplyDeleteThis is not good at all for opening many pictures in new tabs. With the "Classic" layout I could middle-click 4, 5 or more images that interested me in a couple seconds to have them open in a new tab while I kept searching. Now I have to hover over the image, waaaaaait for the pop up and only then can I open it in a new tab. Great, this improvement has just doubled or tripled the time it takes me to look for images...

ReplyDeleteFirefox - version 3.5.11, my default browser, Opera 10.53 and Internet Explorer 8.
Firefox is the only 1 that does NOT show the image details under the images and shows about 100 or more images on the 1 page,
which you have to scroll down and down!
Internet Explorer and Opera show the usual
21 images + the page numbers at bottom for more images.
This new version is total crap.

No, Progress is when the change is for the GOOD. This simply rips off BING, and throws tons of images up, and eating more bandwidth.
I guess you think Google ruining YouTube is progress to? lol....
They tested it today. Exhausting to the eyes. I can only imagine how people with bad eyesight/glasses, or elderly users must feel, when I, being 29 and with a 20/20 eyesight found it impossible to use.
ReplyDeleteAdditionally it's more time-consuming. Not only because it has no quality structure on screen for images, but because now you have to waste valuable time hovering over an image to see information previously available immediately.
Why fix it, if it isn't broken? Most people prefer GoogleImageSearch because it's usable, not because it's cool And the majority uses it at home anyway, far away from any supposed social demands for coolness. Definitely a step back.
They could have at least made it an option. It's the easiest thing, zero cost, and it would make all consumers happy. Top marks for INCOMPETENCE in both development and marketing.
(sorry for the message being so long. Google itself has no actual place in its feedback canter to make descriptions of pros or cons...)

ReplyDeleteChrist almighty: Why, why can't they just leave it alone? It wasn’t broke, we all liked it you know Google – nobody cares about Bing – you don’t need to compete. It is easy to fix anyway at the bottom of the image search page, "Switch to basic version" But shouldn't have to every damn time: which you do!
They need to let people choose the version they are happy with - not force it down their throats. I just hope this is another random Google fad that will phase out – very eff’ing quickly…

ReplyDeleteFor serious searchers, where you are searching through a large number of images where the image size or resolution and hosting web images is important, the new image search takes minutes when it used to take seconds, and hours when it used to take minutes. I have essentially quit using Google as my image search engine and now use the alternatives where this information is displayed. I also feel that displaying the full size image is a copyright violation and I have noticed a dramatic drop in web traffic to my site where I post my own artwork. Worse you can download the full size image directly from Google's search page. If the new search engine is kept by Google, they should allow the option that web owners can prevent display of the full size images.

There was a REASON I used Google Images instead of Bing. That reason is now gone. Please put it back the way it was!

ReplyDeleteSorry, I'm not a fan either. I actually used bing for a month for the experience, but switch back to google for the image search usability. I do Ux design. I surf images a lot. One problem is being able to find your last page. I understand that they display page numbers as you scroll, but it's not discoverable and it's hard to scroll pack to the page you want.

Simple, uncluttered and easy are words I associate with Google, however it appears that you've been taking lessons from Bing and yahoo in how to screw up my browsing.
It worked fine the way it was, don't go changing it for no reason whatsoever.
if you feel the urge to clutter everything up, give us the option to turn it off.
Actually the new interface is less cluttered because you only see the pictures. Additional information is displayed when you mouse over an image.
ReplyDeleteMy computer is NOT new. It is, in fact, quite old. As much as I would like a new one, lack of funds means I'm stuck with it.
ReplyDeleteBecause of its age, my PC tends to be very slow. Having to hover my mouse over the image and wait for it to enlarge (which takes ages thanks to my machine) is very frustrating.
Using it on newer machines is still a pain though. I find the new layout harder to navigate and, quite frankly, bloody annoying. Please, PLEASE, change it back, or at least give us an option to use the old interface.

I am bothered by the step right after clicking the chosen image. You have to close a floating frame to actually get ahold of the image. Feels like more steps than before.

ReplyDeleteI have been using FF+Coolpreviews for years and have been able to view google images in what ever size I choose (original or to set a max size) and the new search engine sucks hard. Now when ever we hover the mouse over a pic, we are having to wait for the sodding thumbnails to double in size before it allows coolpreviews to open the full sized image.
Stupid Google.
The old format was better with concise info and spacing between results that makes zooming in on what you wanted real quick. All I see in this new interface is a lump of colourful

Not everyone has 20mbit/s broadband in the real world. And one more thing I can't help noticing was the "show more results" button at the end of the page. Was that wicked sarcasm on your part, google? As though you're not stressing the hell out of my CPU already? Ever heard the saying, "don't fix it if it ain't broken". I rest my case.

ReplyDeleteI hope this would help, if you are using the default google hompage of your country, i.e., UK, etc., try clicking the link below the search bar which says "Go to Google.com" (the standard hompage). Using the standard hompage, the image result is always displayed in the old format with image size, etc., and NOT displayed all in one page. I then made a bookmark of this google standard homepage. You can also type in the search bar "google.com" to find the standard google hompage :-)

Simply go down to the bottom of an image search result and select Switch to Basic Version. This works on a per session basis only and does not appear to be stored in a cookie or preference. Agree with everyone here, the new image search is PANTS @*>&%@%*@%

ReplyDeleteI now use Yahoo Image search much against my wishes, my fastish computer freezes up trying to load all the images on the new google system and you cannot switch to the old version button at the bottom of the page until its finished. A complete waste of time. One answer would be to put the switch button at the top of the page or allow us to set permanent preferences on our browser.

ReplyDeleteThe new search tries to load about 500 un-attributed images at one time into a browser window. This is a HUGE resource hog & slows all but the latest hardware to a crawl. I then have to mouse over EVERY image for ANY details? Crazy.

The one from last week and all the years prior was perfect, but this new ghosting interface and moving the search box to the top of the screen the moment you begin to type is awful. Hate it! The new "standard" image search display is just plain awful. There's a option at the BOTTOM of the page to switch to basic mode, BUT you have to scroll through 20 or 30 "pages" to reach it.

This is Shit! Google need to add a setting to allow users to pick from the new one and the old one and not have to scroll to the bottom of the page every time you want to switch.

Also, my mouse is on a wire and sometimes moves when I'm typing in the search window, if it moves over an image it activates and takes the cursor out of the window, esp annoying when I'm looking at my keys.

I have a wonderful Maxthon plug-in that lets me go directly to the full image on a blank page and never see the page itself - I can scan a bunch of different images really, really fast.
I dont find googles new image display that I am getting in New Zealand very good, our broadband is of random quality and this new display helps slow things down even more.

I did not ask or select this change so now tend to mistrust Google.
I want the old google results' back, how the page opened, with the image on top with the message "see image in real size" I could scroll the page below, and continue searching from that page -two options that were really very convenient. Hell, I got an IQ of 139 and I still don't 'get it' what to do when I land on some result page, because I must click somewhere before I can get on with anything. And then it takes ages before the page loads normally... It's panic everytime...Why an extra unneccesary step that also is s l o w beyond limits. Now after half a year at least, I'm still not used to the new image search, and it's not gonna happen either. It's just not good. The 'classic' version of opening a result was good with the bar on top. Really really good.
ReplyDeleteTO ALL USERS: DON'T WASTE TIME COMPLAINING, GOOGLE HAS ITS OWN INTERESTS FOR DOING THIS AND YOU ARE NOT IMPORTANT TO THEM. SOLUTION? QUIT GOOGLE AND START USING BING.
ReplyDeletewhy google thinks we need a country region version? Why Google thinks we need a Google.country.com version in our own language? People from other Non U.S. countries DON'T need that "functionality....."
ReplyDeleteI liked it and am really frustrated thats its been changed back to the original format. As a creative who searches through google images looking for inspiration on a regular basis, I loved that I was able to see an instant "mood board" without the distracting bits of information that usually broke up the search results. I hope that google at least implements some kind of option for its users like: Mood Board View and Data View...please? For now, I have bookmarked searches in mood board mode and have made further searches using those bookmarks.

Now set this named search engine as your default.

ReplyDeleteWelcome to the world of arrogant software and weekly UI color and layout changes. You won't be allowed to get used to it. What an arrogant company - and you won't be given but scarce options to customize the UI. There ought to be millions of complaints.
