Google Tests New Image Search Interface

The unofficial blog google.org.cn reports that Google tests a new interface for Image Search. The experimental interface uses bigger thumbnails and no longer shows information about images. To find useful information like the size of the image or the domain that links to the image, you need to mouse over the image.

Google's new UI is very similar to Bing Image Search's interface. It's not the first time when Google tries to hide image details. In 2007, Google launched an image search interface that only displayed information about a result when you hovered over an image, but a lot of users complained and the old interface has been brought back.

{ Thanks, Chen. }

  1. I actually prefer having the image's info visible. I think it's a time waster having to mouse over to get the info a user can get on a quick glance.

  2. @jasonvaritekfan I have to say I agree with what you said and then some!

  3. Maybe a compromise - have the mosueover ino and the same info displayed under it? Be uniquie.. add both instead of one or the other.. and then also let users choose if they want one view or the other.

  4. I Like it, you want images and you get them.

  5. I like having the picture info visible without any action on my part. Actually one reason I use Google instead of Bing for image searches.

  6. Google should stop following Bing :)

  7. It is much like (if not identical) to the interface already used on their mobile version of image search.

  8. I actually reported this a few days ago at http://www.seroundtable.com/archives/022559.html

  9. How's that gunno work when touch technology is taking over, you will have to touch each image.

  10. That's just Awesome. I've tested it. Way to go!
Even it's like Bing for a little bit. But actually, Bing's Image Search is better.

  11. google please revert this, now the full image is shown when you click thumbnail, before the user had to click to see bigger image, now it is automatically loaded which means more BANDWIDTH spent for us webmasters, yesterday i spent more bandwidth than in a week

  12. why don't you leave default search like before, but allow users to change it to new display?

    ReplyDelete
  13. OH DEAR GOD PUT IT BACK TO NORMAL!!!!!!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  14. Aye, Aye!!

Change for the sake of change itself is no good! If something ain't broke . . .

Y'all don't need me to finish that last part. ;)

  15. This thing will really provide a great ease for the people, its a lot easy that a thumbnail of image quickly appears as you move to the link rather than clicking the image and then enlarging the image from the main domain.

    ReplyDelete
  16. It's definitely more useful (to me) when you can glance at the URLs or pixel data to get a feel for the type of website and general category of the image, i.e. scientific or just some random blog upload. This new approach is too dumbed-down and NOT an improvement. I can see it as an alternative, but it makes a poor default arrangement.

Surely Google understands that knowing the source of an image can be more important than just fitting more of them on a single page? The interface should be customizable for those who want either method at a given time, depending on the nature of their image search.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Don't like it!!! It's very UNHELPFUL to hide the image info.

    ReplyDelete
  18. PLEASE provide an option to UNHIDE the image info!

    ReplyDelete
  19. 1) It's annoying that mousing over makes things pop out and obscure other things you might want to look at. Pop the image out onclick, not onmouseover.

    2) Having the image metadata visible by default helps speed up searches and mentally eliminate images that are from bogus/sketchy sites. Make the metadata visible by default.

  20. TOO MUCH SCROLLING!!!!

We need a choice to change it back to the classic version!!

    ReplyDelete
  21. I like the fact that Google is trying new things but I still prefer the old search.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I hate this, how do I revert back?

    ReplyDelete
  23. what is up, fear of change.....

New format either needs to be the new standard, or just give you "change Haters" and old fart mode if you like it the old way.

New format is a HUGE time saver, and packs way more pictures in a smaller space.
    This is Progress, people.

  24. .. And yet none of you pointed out the bug that when you resize the browser window, the scroll resets back to bottom. :|

The new design is workable, but adds extra clicks. Not good. Right click and open in new window/tab worked fine before...

Also, the info about the image was useful, as someone said before - helped to see if the image was worth checking out at all.

    ReplyDelete
  25. (Back to top, not back to bottom)

    ReplyDelete
  26. This is not good at all for opening many pictures in new tabs. With the "Classic" layout I could middle-click 4, 5 or more images that interested me in a couple seconds to have them open in a new tab while I kept searching. Now I have to hover over the image, waaaaaait for the pop up and only then can I open it in a new tab. Great, this improvement has just doubled or tripled the time it takes me to look for images...

That's besides what's been side about not displying information at a glance.

    ReplyDelete
  27. This is, by far, the worst "improvement" Google has ever unveiled. How can we change it back? Who do we need to complain to?

    ReplyDelete
  28. Not all of us can afford cable or broadband connections so dial-up is the only option. The new image search takes forever to load completely. With the old search each page loaded rather quickly even with dial-up.

    ReplyDelete
  29. i agree with much internet users .. i dont like the new image .. i want to get the old back !

    ReplyDelete
  30. I hate it too, how do we let google know they are numbnuts and should have left well enough alone. This new search feature is a bandwidth hog! People don't all have unlimited bandwidth throughout the world. WTF are they thinking?

    ReplyDelete
  31. it's hard to use and have to wait for showing the information.i can't click on the image fast and i have to wait image shows bigger then click on the image to open in new tab or same tab.its wast the time and use more CPU for java script effect.i really prefer the previous interface but new interface looks good cause the all pages images just on the page one.it's good idea but i think you don't need to use JavaScript effect on the mouse over images.when i click on one of the images thumbs to open, and the page opened the image has not any hyperlink to full size and have to click on the "Full-size image" on the left - top menu to open it full size.its worse because the search setting menu on Google in the right and this one on the left.we need to move the mouse more and more and the eyes going to be tired for looking left and right in hard work(professional searching).

    ReplyDelete
  32. Change it back. This is why I dont use Bing. Dont make me use a different search please thanks,

  33. I have just tested using 3 browsers,
Firefox - version 3.5.11, my default browser, Opera 10.53 and Internet Explorer 8.
Firefox is the only 1 that does NOT show the image details under the images and shows about 100 or more images on the 1 page,
which you have to scroll down and down!
Internet Explorer and Opera show the usual
21 images + the page numbers at bottom for more images.

No, Progress is when the change is for the GOOD. This simply rips off BING, and throws tons of images up, and eating more bandwidth.

I guess you think Google ruining YouTube is progress to? lol....

  38. They tested it today. Exhausting to the eyes. I can only imagine how people with bad eyesight/glasses, or elderly users must feel, when I, being 29 and with a 20/20 eyesight found it impossible to use.

Additionally it's more time-consuming. Not only because it has no quality structure on screen for images, but because now you have to waste valuable time hovering over an image to see information previously available immediately.

Why fix it, if it isn't broken? Most people prefer GoogleImageSearch because it's usable, not because it's cool And the majority uses it at home anyway, far away from any supposed social demands for coolness. Definitely a step back.

They could have at least made it an option. It's the easiest thing, zero cost, and it would make all consumers happy. Top marks for INCOMPETENCE in both development and marketing.

(sorry for the message being so long. Google itself has no actual place in its feedback canter to make descriptions of pros or cons...)

    ReplyDelete
  39. I just went on today and the whole damn page changed to this! My first spoken out thoughts were “What is this s***!?” What a total car wreck of a mess it looks!

Christ almighty: Why, why can't they just leave it alone? It wasn’t broke, we all liked it you know Google – nobody cares about Bing – you don’t need to compete. It is easy to fix anyway at the bottom of the image search page, "Switch to basic version" But shouldn't have to every damn time: which you do!

They need to let people choose the version they are happy with - not force it down their throats. I just hope this is another random Google fad that will phase out – very eff’ing quickly…

    ReplyDelete
  40. Hate it. This is one of the reasons why I never use Bing. Please change it back.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Put it back the way it was. Plain and simple, this interface SUCKS!

    ReplyDelete
  42. 1. Google wants the search to work badly on dial-up systems. Dialups are losers to advertisers. Dialups are bad demographics. Go away.

    2. The new image search is purely designed to increase advertising revenue. More clicks, more ad placement. You're mistaken if you think it's because they care about your user experience.

    3. KevinHarden is a tiresome brat, yes?

    ReplyDelete
  43. I hate, hate, hate the new image search. *Please* bring back the old one. And in the future, whenever you guys get an itch to change something, remember this saying: "If it ain't broke, don't fix it."

  44. WHAT NONSENSE. IF GOOGLE WANTS TO START ANY NEW THING KEEP A OLD STYLE SEARCH URL LINK FOR THOSE WHO "DO NOT" AND "DO NOT"WANT YOUR NEW RUBBISH EXPERIMENTS !!

  45. HOW TO DISABLE GOOGLES NEW SILLY IMAGE SEARCH STYLE. Gr8 News If you are using a 1.4 MBPS internet connection then dont read this, but if you use some slow internet connection like most of the people who lives out of USA (Out of Heaven I mean) and want to disable the New Stupid copy of Bing's Image search by Google use the following URL.

    http://google.com/images?q=sunset&sout=1

Or just stop using Google for images and really start using bing.com as they have much better search than what google did.

  47. GRrrrrr I hate this new image search from google,
the old one was fanstastic the new one sucks.

    ReplyDelete
  48. HATE IT, HATE IT, HATE IT. Is that clear enough?

  49. I have 10mbps download and this stupid page is still cumbersome and takes too long to load!

  50. change it back, its annoying...

    ReplyDelete
  51. this image search is terrible i like the old one where it when you clicked on an image it would come up in like a split screen with the image info at the top and the site down bellow. also i have had problems when i click on view full size and it only comes up with the thumbnail and not the full size image.

I beg you please change it back or have a link to go back to old search style permanently.

    ReplyDelete
  52. OH GOD ITS HORRIBLE!!! CHANGE IT BACK!

    ReplyDelete
  53. For serious searchers, where you are searching through a large number of images where the image size or resolution and hosting web images is important, the new image search takes minutes when it used to take seconds, and hours when it used to take minutes. I have essentially quit using Google as my image search engine and now use the alternatives where this information is displayed. I also feel that displaying the full size image is a copyright violation and I have noticed a dramatic drop in web traffic to my site where I post my own artwork. Worse you can download the full size image directly from Google's search page. If the new search engine is kept by Google, they should allow the option that web owners can prevent display of the full size images.

    ReplyDelete
  54. I really loathe what Google have done with image search. It's slow and cumbersome and just a mess.

I was perfectly happy with it the way it was before and now Google have wrecked it completely.

    Just the pits.

    ReplyDelete
  55. It's suck and confusing - waiting for pic-info appears. Not always this what shows picture is important - the little bigger pics are not worth of wasting time for opening info.
If you do so give us at least a choice/option! (old/new UI ver.)

    NEEDLESS IMPROV

    ReplyDelete
  58. This "improvement" is an incredible time-waster for those of us whose job depends on being able to search through hundreds of images every day to find website and data information. There was a REASON I used Google Images instead of Bing. That reason is now gone. Please put it back the way it was!

    ReplyDelete
  59. i hate this new format!

    ReplyDelete
  60. Sorry, I'm not a fan either. I actually used bing for a month for the experience, but switch back to google for the image search usability. I do Ux design. I surf images a lot. One problem is being able to find your last page. I understand that they display page numbers as you scroll, but it's not discoverable and it's hard to scroll pack to the page you want.

I really think it's terrible what they did. Sorry google.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Drop it.

    Preferably into the nearest volcano.

Simple, uncluttered and easy are words I associate with Google, however it appears that you've been taking lessons from Bing and yahoo in how to screw up my browsing.

It worked fine the way it was, don't go changing it for no reason whatsoever.

if you feel the urge to clutter everything up, give us the option to turn it off.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Actually the new interface is less cluttered because you only see the pictures. Additional information is displayed when you mouse over an image.

    ReplyDelete
  63. My computer is NOT new. It is, in fact, quite old. As much as I would like a new one, lack of funds means I'm stuck with it.

Because of its age, my PC tends to be very slow. Having to hover my mouse over the image and wait for it to enlarge (which takes ages thanks to my machine) is very frustrating.
Using it on newer machines is still a pain though. I find the new layout harder to navigate and, quite frankly, bloody annoying. Please, PLEASE, change it back, or at least give us an option to use the old interface.

    ReplyDelete
  64. This solution is to get back the old version permanently for use in IE.

    Use this URL.

    http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/searchguide/en-en/default.mspx

Now copy and paste the following url to create a Non Country Region search engine for Google, give it a name and press Install.

    http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&source=imghp&q=TEST&btnG=Search&gbv=2&aq=f&aqi=&aql=&oq=&gs_rfai=&sout=1&biw=1280&bih=693

Now set this named search engine as your default.

    ReplyDelete
  65. Total waste of my time. I'M GOING TO USE YAHOO UNTIL GOOGLE STARTS LISTENING TO THEIR USERS AND AT THE VERY LEAST LET US CHOOSE WHICH ONE WE WANT TO USE......... NEW/OLD.

    ReplyDelete
  66. OK just wanted to say that I don't like it and I don't normally bother to comment on these things.

Too cluttered and slow, and it doesn't show useful info like the page URL, which is important for security reasons (do I trust the site enough to click through) etc.

    ReplyDelete
  67. i really hate it very bad. it slows me down.
now i have to wait for the thumbs to pop out if i want to use middle mouse button to open multiple pictures in new tabs. and i always use this method >:( also the image size and resolution infos are essential you cant deny that.
now i have to mouseover every picture to see and everytime i have to wait fot for the tuhumb to pop out. this is annoying.
maybe google should have spent their money on promoting the wave project instead of developing this stuff that nobody really asked for. then maybe the wave project wouldnt be a total failure and waste.
and thoes who want bing-like UI, the just use bing for gods sake!
i know google thinks they gain more users with this UI but right now they have the most of the users worldwide and i dont think its just because they are here for a while... but because they like this service more than the other services that came later. now google wants to mimic thoes. thats stupid. using this new UI feels like im a dumb newbie. :'(

    ReplyDelete
  68. I am bothered by the step right after clicking the chosen image. You have to close a floating frame to actually get ahold of the image. Feels like more steps than before.

    ReplyDelete
  69. Takes way too long to load all images, far better the last way, and it's chewing bandwidth worse than anything. Costing your followers time and money isn't really forward thinking is it?

Please return it to it's much better format.

    ReplyDelete
  70. Great to see a new way of doing things but you think more research would be done on user experience before the launch. When people who do not normally express annoyance do so then something is wrong. Our solution- Yahoo :)

  71. what the hell happened google images! it used to be GREAT!!!! google is the only search engine i use! now its ruined. i hate having to scroll forever, pictures take to long to load, it looks sloppy, hard to see all the pictures are cramed on the page the orginal was clear and structured and provided infomation under the picture, now i have to hover over it? is google trying to make customers go elsewhere? there was NOTHING WRONG with the orginal!!!!! if it aint broke dont fix it!!!!! please give us the option to save the orginal version as a preset! until that i will no longer be using google images. goodbye google hello alta vista and yahoo

    ReplyDelete
  72. Good to hear that it is not only me that is not enjoying this carp.

I have been using FF+Coolpreviews for years and have been able to view google images in what ever size I choose (original or to set a max size) and the new search engine sucks hard. Now when ever we hover the mouse over a pic, we are having to wait for the sodding thumbnails to double in size before it allows coolpreviews to open the full sized image.

    Stupid Google.

    ReplyDelete
  73. The old format was better with concise info and spacing between results that makes zooming in on what you wanted real quick. All I see in this new interface is a lump of colourful
pixels on my screen that actually makes searching difficult in that it tends to make your eyeball dart all over the place. Besides, why do I need like well, 300 results in a single page? Not everyone has 20mbit/s broadband in the real world. And one more thing I can't help noticing was the "show more results" button at the end of the page. Was that wicked sarcasm on your part, google? As though you're not stressing the hell out of my CPU already? Ever heard the saying, "don't fix it if it ain't broken". I rest my case.

    ReplyDelete
  74. I really dislike the new image browser, it's so irritating!

    ReplyDelete
  75. I hope this would help, if you are using the default google hompage of your country, i.e., UK, etc., try clicking the link below the search bar which says "Go to Google.com" (the standard hompage). Using the standard hompage, the image result is always displayed in the old format with image size, etc., and NOT displayed all in one page. I then made a bookmark of this google standard homepage. You can also type in the search bar "google.com" to find the standard google hompage :-)

    ReplyDelete
  76. Sorry if anyone else has already posted this, however the 'old' version of viewing IS still available. Simply go down to the bottom of an image search result and select Switch to Basic Version. This works on a per session basis only and does not appear to be stored in a cookie or preference. Agree with everyone here, the new image search is PANTS @*>&%@%*@%

I hope this bankrupts Google, I hate it that much.

    ReplyDelete
  85. I can't stand it! I am using google to search for a new search engine, one that respects people with the handicap called 'dial-up'. There are still a lot of us out there believe it or not. We are already suffering enough without google doing this to us.

The other thing they used to do that was so great, was include information about the sizes of the web pages in a regular google web search. That's gone too. I'm sorry google. I used to love you but now you suck!

    ReplyDelete
  86. Guys, hold down "Ctrl + End" on your keyboard and click "Switch to basic version" on the bottom of the page. It'll go back to the normal version.

  91. I just want the ability to set my default back to the basic version. The new layout is AWFUL!

    ReplyDelete
  92. When I do an image search I'm looking for maybe 20 to 50 top hits & at a glance image details, just like the old Google image search. This was quick and convenient.

The new search tries to load about 500 un-attributed images at one time into a browser window. This is a HUGE resource hog & slows all but the latest hardware to a crawl. I then have to mouse over EVERY image for ANY details? Crazy.

How exactly is this an improvement over the old image search?

    ReplyDelete
  93. I use Glims in Safari to add search engines, if you add the following query URL to the list for Google image search you will get the "Basic" search results we all miss.

    http://images.google.com/images?q=#query#&ei=utf-8&oe=utf-8&sout=1

  94. I HATE IT!!!!!!! I'M ON A NEW LAPTOP RUNNING A WINDOWS VISTA CONNECTED WITH HIGH SPEED INTERNET WITH DOWNLOAD RATES OF AROUND 1MB PER SECOND AND THATS STILL NOT FAST ENOUGH TO LOAD UP THE PICTURES AS YOU'RE SCROLLING DOWN. MY BROWSER SKIPS AND FREEZES.

  95. I hate the new interface Google is using for searching. The one from last week and all the years prior was perfect, but this new ghosting interface and moving the search box to the top of the screen the moment you begin to type is awful. Hate it! I will use a different search engine now, until they put it back the way it was.

  96. "Ctrl + End" does not work on my laptop (Anonymous August 31, 2010 9:37 PM).
What I did was I saved this link
    http://google.com/images?q=sunset&sout=1
as a favourite in my Favourite Bar and whenever I need to search in google pics using the good old display, I just click it! Good luck!

    ReplyDelete
  97. The new "standard" image search display is just plain awful. There's a option at the BOTTOM of the page to switch to basic mode, BUT you have to scroll through 20 or 30 "pages" to reach it.

I can't think of any way this could have been made more obnoxious.

    ReplyDelete
  98. Is there a way to turn this off permanently? It's quite dreadful and not at all user-friendly.

    ReplyDelete
  99. This new images search sucks, if you like to just look at images then maybe this will work for you. But for all of us who use Google search for work and not just dicking around. This is Shit! Google need to add a setting to allow users to pick from the new one and the old one and not have to scroll to the bottom of the page every time you want to switch.

    ReplyDelete
  100. Apart from being really slow, I hate that I cant use my scroll wheel if the mouse is over the page. Also, my mouse is on a wire and sometimes moves when I'm typing in the search window, if it moves over an image it activates and takes the cursor out of the window, esp annoying when I'm looking at my keys.

  106. I tried the URL posted way up above, and it works like a charm for me:

    http://google.com/images?q=sunset&sout=1

I have a wonderful Maxthon plug-in that lets me go directly to the full image on a blank page and never see the page itself - I can scan a bunch of different images really, really fast.

  107. I dont find googles new image display that I am getting in New Zealand very good, our broadband is of random quality and this new display helps slow things down even more.
My first priority is to know the details before I even "Hover" over an image.
I did not ask or select this change so now tend to mistrust Google.

  108. I want the old google results' back, how the page opened, with the image on top with the message "see image in real size" I could scroll the page below, and continue searching from that page -two options that were really very convenient. Hell, I got an IQ of 139 and I still don't 'get it' what to do when I land on some result page, because I must click somewhere before I can get on with anything. And then it takes ages before the page loads normally... It's panic everytime...Why an extra unneccesary step that also is s l o w beyond limits. Now after half a year at least, I'm still not used to the new image search, and it's not gonna happen either. It's just not good. The 'classic' version of opening a result was good with the bar on top. Really really good.

  109. TO ALL USERS: DON'T WASTE TIME COMPLAINING, GOOGLE HAS ITS OWN INTERESTS FOR DOING THIS AND YOU ARE NOT IMPORTANT TO THEM. SOLUTION? QUIT GOOGLE AND START USING BING.

  110. why google thinks we need a country region version? Why Google thinks we need a Google.country.com version in our own language? People from other Non U.S. countries DON'T need that "functionality....."

  111. I liked it and am really frustrated thats its been changed back to the original format. As a creative who searches through google images looking for inspiration on a regular basis, I loved that I was able to see an instant "mood board" without the distracting bits of information that usually broke up the search results. I hope that google at least implements some kind of option for its users like: Mood Board View and Data View...please? For now, I have bookmarked searches in mood board mode and have made further searches using those bookmarks.

  112. This solution is to get back the old version permanently for use in IE.

    Use this URL.

    http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/searchguide/en-en/default.mspx

Now copy and paste the following url to create a Non Country Region search engine for Google, give it a name and press Install.

    http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&source=imghp&q=TEST&btnG=Search&gbv=2&aq=f&aqi=&aql=&oq=&gs_rfai=&sout=1&biw=1280&bih=693

Now set this named search engine as your default.

  114. Welcome to the world of arrogant software and weekly UI color and layout changes. You won't be allowed to get used to it. What an arrogant company - and you won't be given but scarce options to customize the UI. There ought to be millions of complaints.
