How to Go Back to Gmail's Older Version

If you have the new version of Gmail, but you don't like it, there are some ways to go back to the old version. Maybe you don't have a fast Internet connection and Gmail suddenly feels slower, maybe there are too many bugs or you love a Gmail-related extension or Greasemonkey script that suddenly doesn't work.

Gmail provides a link to the old version (http://mail.google.com/mail/?ui=1), but the change is not persistent, so you'll still see the new version the next time you go to Gmail. And even if you bookmark the link, some Gmail-related plug-ins will still not work.

Because the new version is only available in Firefox 2 and Internet Explorer 7, another way to revert to the standard Gmail would be to use another browser, like Opera or Safari. But that's not very convenient or practical.

So what's the best solution? Change Gmail's interface language in the settings from English (US) to another language, like English (UK). You'll lose some features (creating Google Calendar events, PowerPoint viewer) and some names will be different (instead of Trash, you'll see Deleted Items), but these are minor changes.

Gmail's new version will be rolled out to everyone in the coming weeks and will eventually replace the current version, but by the time it reaches everyone, Gmail will probably fix the performance issues and your favorite plug-ins will update their code. A Gmail API would be a much better idea for the future, because every change in Gmail's code can break a plug-in like Gmail Manager or some useful Greasemonkey scripts.

Update: Obviously, this was just a temporary solution and it no longer works, since Gmail 2 is available for English (UK). If you still don't like the new version of Gmail, bookmark http://mail.google.com/mail/?ui=1, but that address won't be available indefinitely either.

  8. Use firefox's add-on 'User Agent Switcher'.

  9. I've changed to US (from UK) and there is still no change. Hey, at least there's the navigation bar along the top as opposed to a small blue box...

  10. Your quote:
"A Gmail API would be a much better idea for the future, because every change in Gmail's code can break a plug-in"

If you read the comment at http://productivefirefox.com/2007/11/03/gtdinbox-v2-screams-from-the-engine-room/

"not even we’d like to contemplate having to tackle Gmail’s new codebase from the outside… it’s far more complex than it ever was"

a Gmail api doesnt' seem to be likely for this version...

(Luckily the ?ui=1 bookmark solution worked for me to keep the GTDInbox plugin working...)

  11. @Pascal:
That's a really bad news, but I can't believe they didn't think about an API when they built the new version. And even if Gmail's code is complex, that doesn't mean an API could not be built. Hoes does the mobile Gmail app communicate with Google's servers?

  12. I think just in 2 or 3 month the first Addons or Greasemonkey Scripts will wok with new Gmail. If you compare the old and the new code, there are many changes.

  13. I have a link called 'Older Version' in the top right corner of my Gmail page.

That said, I don't mind the newer version at all, but people who have too many messages in their inbox might see some lag during the prefetch.

  14. now i know why my gmail doesnt appear in the new version. i use uk english.

  15. Safari uses the new version by default.

There are still a couple bugs, like the fact that it doesn't autofill email addresses anymore.

I find it much faster, and if it fixes the issue of not being able to use the Back button, then I am in heaven!

  16. I HATE GMAIL's new version!!! Why mess with something that was so great!? If they don't fix this problem soon I'm going to have to use a new e-mail.

  17. The 'New Version' SUCKS!!! I do not care about having my chat, which I never use in my screen, and the way that it displays Contacts in the new version blows as well.

    ReplyDelete
  18. I like the new contacts look. I like the look of Gmail Docs. I wish the whole look including the home page/inbox was like that. For a "new" Gmail 2.0 , I think it is really lame. Gmail needs a new appearance, it still looks like something from the 1980's.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I do not like the new version. In fact, I specifically chose the older version which let me totally disable chatting.

The change in widgets seems to have been done for no reason. There was nothing wrong with the older version. There are several other deficiencies that cause me to click the "Older Version" link every time I check my mail.

I would like to see the older version (or at least an exact copy of the interface and behaviour) left as a configurable option.

  20. I really don't like that it's being forced on us before it's ready. Yes I can switch back, but I have to do it every single time I launch and that's annoying. Second, I really hate google chat within gmail. I use the separate client for chat and I really hate that now, when I launch gmail, it broadcasts that I'm available when I don't want to be.

  21. I have been trying to use my gmail account for the past 3 days. It's not loading at all. Once I input my user name and password it's sends an error message and asks if i would like to view in HTML. I click and it automatically goes back to the sign in page. I tried all suggestions in postings. Any other ones?

  22. The New Gmail is a big dissapointment. I now cannot search for anything other than the name field in contacts. The old version searched all fields and notes within contacts as a result Im screwed and have to find a new system

    thanks google

  23. thanks for the tip! english (uk) worksforme. and the new version lagged and i lost data when saving drafts. complete loss. (oi, i know, the price of free email...)

    ReplyDelete
  24. I would like to make another suggestion to those who would prefer to use the older version of Gmail. After finding that some would rather use this older version, I decided to write a Greasemonkey script that redirects the user to this version after logging into Gmail. If you are using Firefox and have the Greasemonkey extension installed on it, then I would suggest giving this script a try. If you would like to use it, it can be found here. And if you would like to read more about this script, you may click here.

  25. I HATE the new version of gmail. I am still able to click on the link for the old version but am afraid that soon that option will be over. I have tried both bookmarking and changing to the language to English UK but nothing stops the new version from loading. I used to LOVE gmail. It was simple, organized beautifully and I loved being able to label everything.....now I have that stupid chat box that I never used. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrr. I just don't understand why Google had to go mess with a perfect email system. I don't want all this new junk with gmail....just good old (version) gmail! I don't see why we can't have some sort of default button to use. I'm afraid the only thing Google is going to notice is when we all go elsewhere for our emailing needs.

  26. The new version of Gmail sucks. I don't want the chat feature and am tired of watching it try and load while I hit the link for the old version. I have tried bookmarking and also the changing the language to English (UK). Nothing works! It still loads as the new version with all of that junk and clutter that is annoying. What has happened at Google is what I would love to know? I used to really admire the company as a whole. The new version is just junk and eventually there will be no link to the old version. I am really upset since I loved just the labels alone. It was great to have them...and I used them as a really easy file system. Now that chat feature loads where labels used to be displayed. I have tried to get used to the new version. It's slow and it's cluttered. It's everything I never expected from Google, actually. I will miss old Gmail but I won't be sticking around with the new version. Its an insult to those of us who have stuck with Google all these years. I just expected more from them since they did have the very best product out there. Not anymore. So long Google Junk. That's my new name for the company that brought me "the new version" out of nowhere and for no good reason. There are other junkie email programs and that's where I guess I will be going since I won't support Google and it's new direction.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Google please give us a button that allows us to set Gmail in the old version.
I just hate the new version for all the same reasons I am reading here from everyone else.
When my link to the old version is gone so am I.
I just expected so much more from you as a company. I will lose respect for you...not that it matters much to a corporation. The only thing that may get your attention is when I and many other "old" users vanish. You had such a great product....award winning. Its a shame that you had to clutter it up with a chat feature I don't want and all the other junk that was never what your users really wanted....if they did...they would be at AOL or Yahoo.

  28. I have broadband Internet access, and still Gmail's newer version is way too slow! I've been fighting it for a couple of weeks. Today I tried clicking on "Older Version" after I logged in and suddenly Gmail was MUCH faster! Has anyone else had trouble with the newer version being too slow?

    ReplyDelete
  29. So far I've *lost* three email messages I was composing with the new version. I've had to restart Firefox I don't know how many times: the new version makes it hang in certain circumstances.

I try to always use the Older Version or the Basic HTML Version, but sometimes I forget, and get bitten. I hope they fix this some day soon.

I'd think this is a big embarrassment for Google. I'm surprised it isn't more in the news. Maybe it only affects Firefox users? With certain extensions? It can't be that rare, because my parents spontaneously complained about it too.

    ReplyDelete
  30. i use a script called Gmail - Dark, which worked fine until my Gmail Notifier add-on for Firefox started logging me on the new version of Gmail. This messed up the whole dark look of Gmail, so everytime I have to hit new version at the top. I guess I am just lazy, but the only thing that seems to work is he English (U.K.) setting. I tried the Gmail redirect script and there was no such luck.

    ReplyDelete
  31. The new version of Gmail is broken and won't load for dial up at all, it brings in tons more spam, I think they sold out to some evil plan. Yes you can click the old version at the top right but next visit it is back to not loading on the new version.

It is too bad they didn't learn from mistakes that MSN made long ago, when you have something that works and everyone wants it, don't change it. just fix any bugs reported by the people that are making you popular, don't become smug and conceited and start forcing malware on everyone.

    ReplyDelete
  32. My problem is similar to one another blogger mentioned. Why should everyone on my friend list have the privilege of knowing that I'm online just because I want to check my email? Now, I spend five to ten minutes being evasive to people that "shout me out" as soon as I get online. I loved gmail from the inception. I'm not the type to change over easily, but gmail made me feel comfortable enough to do it without a second thought. If the "Older Version" button goes, my race to click that link before someone notices I'm online is over and I will feel as if my privacy is compromised......unless there's a way to make myself invisible to everyone when I sign on to gmail. Is there a way?

    ReplyDelete
  33. I have had no difficulty with the script that redirects the user to the older version of Gmail that I previously mentioned. However, I will see if I can find out why it may not be working for you, Ch@pm@n. Is anyone else having any difficulty with it?

    ReplyDelete
  34. Gmail NEEDS a setting to choose old or new style PERMANENTLY! It's NOT as big of a deal as they are letting on. Sheesh! Why they had to go and screw up a good thing is beyond me!

    ReplyDelete
  35. I agree. Gmail needs an option to permanently use the old version. I had gotten pretty used to the new version, but just saw the old version link today and tried it out. Wow! I didn't realize how much faster the old version really was! I also much prefer the old contacts page. It was just so simple, so straightforward, and so...well...Google.

My other email providers, AOL and Yahoo!, have created new and improved interfaces, probably in an attempt to compete with Gmail, and they stink! They're sooooo slow and bloated. I thought Google would never do it, but now they're moving in the same direction. What now?

    ReplyDelete
  36. Gmail stopped working entirely on Firefox 3 Beta 1, which is otherwise pretty good and much faster.

Can't really blame them too much for that, as it's brand new, but i thought I'd let people know, because it took me a while to figure it out.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I would like to say to Ch@pm@n and anyone else using the script for redirecting to the older version of Gmail that the script has been updated. I have tested it out and it works correctly for me, and it works with more possible situations that may occur. The script can be downloaded from here. As always, I would appreciate any feedback about this script.

    ReplyDelete
  38. New version's lack of e-mail address autofill feature is a royal pain. Also, I too do not want the chat crap clutter. If I cannot get the old version permanently back I am leaving Google Mail and (believe it or not) returning to aol. The missing autofill thing is my major beef.

    ReplyDelete
  39. For anyone who hasn't seen the new version, consider yourself lucky. Enjoy the fast, no-nonsense version while you can... soon you'll be waiting 20+ seconds to check your mail, and the only extra feature I've noticed is if you accidentally hover your mouse over someone's name, a big ugly popup shows up saying their name, and no other useful information at all, obscuring the subject line you were reading.

On another note, does anyone know a way to spoof your UserAgent string just for a specific site?

  40. It's now Dec. 27, and gmail still hangs up on Firefox. What is particularly annoying is the arrogance of these people. By the way, the service is not free. You pay for it by buying the thousands of products that advertise through Google. Back to the arrogance: there is no obvious link to reach an actual gmail employee to register a complaint and get an answer.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Yes, not being able to actually speak with a gmail representative is most annoying. When I was with aol it was never difficult to access help and for that reason I will be returning to aol with the new year. I see some of you are actually waiting to get the new version. How can it not be universal? Why wasn't I given a choice? Arrogant indeed to foist something on me that I do not want.

    ReplyDelete
  42. @Hot-t:
<< By the way, the service is not free. You pay for it by buying the thousands of products that advertise through Google. >>

The service is free because you pay $0. Nobody forces you to click on the ads and they're not as intrusive as the banners from Yahoo Mail or Hotmail. You might even find links to useful services.

    @Jack:
<< Yes, not being able to actually speak with a gmail representative is most annoying. >>

Imagine that 10,000 Gmail users send an email every day to Google's support team. How many employees would Google need to answer to each of the messages in a timely manner? Google automates the process and only answers to some of the messages. If you receive an automated response, reply with more details and Google might answer you.

<< I see some of you are actually waiting to get the new version. How can it not be universal? Why wasn't I given a choice? >>

They're still testing it by enabling the new version only for some of the accounts. You're not missing too many features anyway (colored labels, AIM integration, updated contact manager) and the old version is still faster and more stable.

  43. Allow me to add to the HATRED of the new Gmail. The user should have more choices and setting options not less. It's just common...er...uncommon sense. BTW, thanks so much for this page. The 'english UK' thing was exactly what I was looking for. Will this fix last? Are they going to 'F' it up too? I sure hope not. If so I am dumping Gmail. Cheers, stinki

  44. The only issue I have with the new version is that it doesn't autofill with Safari. For that reason, I am using the UK version until they get that all worked out.

  45. I think I have the newer version of gmail, but my problem is that it really won't work, it takes at least 25-30 seconds to load anything, and it is getting really irritating, and this is only on my computer, when I log in from other computers, it's normal, fast. I need some help, I don't know how to fix it, I don't know if my computer is the problem, or if my gmail account is. Help!

  46. Maintain the Rage!

I've been watching my older PCs at home fight a losing battle with GMail, all the time thinking IE had bee compromised. In fact She Who Must Be Obeyed blamed a relative for sending a "virus that broke GMail" which I dismissed as ridiculous, given the extensive security software we run.

Who'd have thought Google broke their own GMail??

And here I am at work, two PCs trying to figure why GMail takes a minute to load, then discovering the "Old Version" - then finding the switch ain't permanent .. what's the bloody point of that??

So, it's Google's little gnomes, hammering away in the bowels of the G-plex, trying to make a dollar from all the greedy souls who've been soaking up the apparently-free bandwidth.

Well, from me it's "So Long GMail, it was great knowing you."

    ReplyDelete
  47. The interface is still pathetic. Feels like working on html tables, there is simply no eligance to anything :(

  48. i cant use the new version gmail ?

  49. I agree with some other posters that this should be a setting within the Options tab. Most of the time I work with IE6 or Opera but during some sessions I prefer FF, while I also prefer the 'old' version. This is NOT user friendly :(

  50. Too bad this concept doesn't work any longer (the UK language selection). Gmail rolled out hte UK version this past week, and I've been looking for a way to revert back sense.

  51. The new version is CRAP! Just try to upload an attachment. More often than not it times out . . . CRAP!

  52. I'm really disappointed with gmail as well now. I actually thought there was something wrong with my Firefox, but no, apparently not. Only now I discovered the older version is still available, but of course you have to be able to load the new interface to be able switch to the old one! And when loading, either my browser crashes or I get numerous "unresponsive script" warnings, so it takes forever to even load the new version. Gah.

    ReplyDelete
  53. << but of course you have to be able to load the new interface to be able switch to the old one >>

  55. I'm glad I found this thread and that I'm not the only one. I HATE the new gmail and it betrays everything we thought google had learned about what (most) people want: fast, simple, reliable.

I think there's two problems: 1. The devil makes work for idle hands. Developers with nothing to do will ... um, develop. And develop, and develop, until the product collapses; and 2. Google developers will all have super-fast machines with multi-gig memory and fat-pipe, high-speed internet ... unlike a substantial part of their client base. If they end up reading this, they'll be puzzled: "Huh? Mine loads fast."

I actually stumbed onto this thread when I was searching for an alternative to gmail (using the search terms "gmail" and "bloated" LOL)

The irony is that google search retains the old stripped-down look -- funny how they haven't wrecked that.

As soon as the 'old version' is no longer available, it's "bye bye gmail."

    ReplyDelete
  56. The new gmail just straight up sucks... period. Getting quite frustrated with it. NOW I can't even get my old version to work. Why do they gotta fix something that is not broken to begin with?

Yea I am with Chainey... Bye Bye gmail.

    ReplyDelete
  57. I am on dial up and the new version does not load 98% of the time. One of the choices is to choose HTML which does not give you your contact listing automatically. I much prefer the older version.

  58. If it aint broke then don't fix it!
What I HATE about the new version is I am not able to batch delete my spam file.
Now I have to go and chack each entry one by one; which is a pain in the dery-air.
Unless someone knows of another way to perform that task.
Oh!!! anther issue is that I can't put the yellow star next to something I want to mark.
So; tell us, what the hell is the improvement with the new verison?????

    ReplyDelete
  59. The new version of gmail is a major pain in the dari-aire and I can't understand what the advantages are when they did away with the ability to batch delete the spam file, plus not being able to put the yellow star next to a message you want to refer back too.
IF IT AINT BROKE; THEN DON'T FIX IT!!!

  66. I'm so over these useless changes to the email clients they keep pushing out. I only use gmail through an IMAP client now because I'm so sick of them constantly changing the interface. Booo to the programmers who like change more than they like consistently happy customers.

  68. I have to agree with all the posters above. The new Gmail is bloody awful. The appeal of the original (and indeed Google search itself) was its simple and reliable fuss-free approach. I don't have issues with the speed as some have - I just don't like being told I have to have the new version without the option. Clicking 'older version' every time is a pain. Simple, Google - just give us the choice, that's all. As many others have said - when the old version is no longer available by any means, I'm out of here.

  69. Improvements are one thing, change that appears to be for the sake of change is a very bad idea because humans are creatures of habit. I can accept the changes but I shall never forgive Gmail for doing away with the Google search box that came up on my in tray. That is one change that I did not need and that, I am sure, was not needed by anybody else, except perhaps Google themselves. The big advantage of the Gmail page was that one could go anywhere from it and there was no need to open a new one for anything. It was efficiency carried to the utmost and that efficiency is now lost.

    ReplyDelete
  70. Gmail is the new Hotmail!!!!! This is pathetic, has been since last fall. Google started a disturbing trend of being "evil" a few years back. This is one more example. Why not give us options. We don't like the new layout, don't force it on us. I hate windows and yahoo email services, now Gmail is looking like its going towards the same.

  80. New version of gmail stinks. Far worse than the other free mail outlets like hotmail or yahoo. I can't believe a company that big refuses to listen to their users.

    My rating -

1)yahoo - flexible interface, good spam filter.

    .... big gap ....

    2) hotmail - reasonable interface, but endorses spams.

    3) gmail- interface not remotely friendly. A big headache to use. I think it was designed by programmers for programmers or the minion of robots they plan to make. Definitely not for every day people. But excellent at spam filtering.

4)Godaddy - I actually paid for this doo-doo. They don't have anything right. Can't control spams. interface is for those who have an hour to browse around to do a simple function. zero flexibility. Customer service refuses to acknowledge problems. Their product is fine and doesn't need to be as user friendly as others because godaddy says so.

  84. I couldn't find a way to bookmark the older version URL. What I hope will work is an email to myself, which I have put in my draft box with the older versioon URL, so I can copy/paste it in the URL location when I need to.

  85. I just found the best solution to this problem. All you must do is turn off chat, Buzz and other annoying features then go to Settings --> Themes --> Select "Classic" theme. Even when you use the newer version of Gmail, you will have similar user experience as older version.

  86. arrrggghhhh..I like older version more..it's not slow like newer version..google need to do something..

    ReplyDelete
  87. The google mentality is to play games with words and language. First of all it's call "older version" instead of Classic Version like it should be because they want to FORCE a "fancier" "cuter" user interface rather than provide choice - ie. they don't practice what they preach. Second of all, the "older version" should be persistent and connected to the login name and not have to be clicked on every F@#$% time. There are millions of people who prefer a simple, clean, working, fast, efficient, familiar INTERFACE. Please get a CLUE all you software execs, managers and developers.

a successful 300,000 people etc. Boycott, to
    keep the old version.

The new one sucks. No Improvement. Uncomfortable square look, I only like the rounded edges...and takes away most of my contacts. WHY??? IDIOTs!

The only way to have any effect is news for three weeks etc. that tens of thousands have boycotted Google!! Lets ARRANGE IT!!

  92. Its now Oct 14th 2010 and the older version obtained with this link
    http://mail.google.com/mail/?ui=1

Is no longer valid. I hate the look of what the new version is.

    Any suggestions?

    ReplyDelete
  93. http://mail.google.com/mail/?ui=1 still works for me, but the old UI will be soon discontinued.

    ReplyDelete
  94. Yes, the new UI is a piece of garbage, and now there's no way to go back.

Maybe someone is knowledgeable and willing enough to create a script for it, if even possible? Only time will tell.
