Body Browser, No Longer a Google Service

One of the coolest apps launched by Google last year will have a new owner. Google Body Browser was a great way to show the power of WebGL, but it was also a useful app for exploring the human body. Body Browser will continue to exist, but it will be owned by Zygote Media Group.
As Google Labs winds down, we will be retiring Google Body. However, you will soon be able to find its functionality elsewhere. We are working on open-sourcing the code that powers Google Body so that anyone will be able to create and run a searchable 3D viewer. We are also working with our partner, Zygote Media Group, on an application called Zygote Body. This application will be free, available on the web and on Android, and will enable students, teachers, and others using Google Body to continue to have access to a human anatomy browser.

  1. WTF?!?!

Zygote's website has not been updated since 2010. Looks like Google have begun to partner with the irrelevant.

  3. This seems like a terrible idea.

  4. It's apps like these that (could?) sell android tablets. If anything google should be making *more* of these fun tech demos.

  5. Thats good. I am not sure the choice of Zygote is a right one though as I agree with Ananya that it hasnt been updated since 2010

  7. http://www.biodigitalhuman.com/ is a more advanced WebGL 3D body browser than the current Google Body Browser!

  8. I feel its a good move by Google and lets wait and see how it grows...

  9. I think that the reason they chose Zygote to host the new body browser is that Zygote are the ones who own the Copyright to the data for Body (although Google still own the rights to Google Cow (bottom of links menu in body browser))

  13. how can google ensure it will stay free when moving this apps to another company?
As a doctor, the google disappoint me again after the "google health"

  14. And it just closed. Thanks for closing it before it was ready to open again google. I'd use some profanities, but what's the point.

  15. Aww come on, as Anonymous and alfski already said, there's no need to worry with better sites out there! Moreover, Zygote has some real quality 3D models, so I just hope I'll get the chance to view some of them for free. ;D
Maybe someday we can make our own online videos and tutorials with viewers like this. That would be simply amazing for teaching! I'd also love to link one of these body viewer projects to wikipedia. Would be good for both.

  19. Dear Google

I realize that you want to put more wood behind each arrow and therefore have stopped the Google Body Browser service. But what about users who love Google Body. I am a grade 6 science teacher and designed my lessons to use the body browser and now they are not available. This transition could have been handled much better to ensure there was no stop in service.

  22. Pity, but my zoology/comparative anatomy class has missed the opportunity to use this splendid google product....

  23. Really a pity. Learning Cardiology procedures and suddenly this marvellous app is over. I can´t understand why shut down without a replacement. No sense at all. Medical Community feel really disapointed.

Bad news. No much confidence with Google

  24. I work for Zygote Media Group and have been frustrated as many of you with how long it is taking to get the browser back up and running. Getting lawyers to talk to lawyers is maddening! BUT we are very close to re releasing the body browser. It will come back EXACTLY how it was when it left. We will then start working on improvements and enhancements. We have big plans for the body browser and hope we haven't driven off too many of the people who loved Google Body by this long and frustrating waiting period.
Anyway I am no official spokesperson or anything, just an employee but wanted you all to know we are close!

  25. Thanks for the information Jared! As a bone and joint radiologist, I have so missed using Google Body for strengthening my knowledge of anatomy, and as a teaching tool for patients and MRI technologists. My fingers are crossed that you are right and things can again be right!

  26. Really disappointed by Google on this. Never heard of Zygote but their crappy placeholder page is NOT a good first impression. Perhaps they could explain why something that was available to all no longer exists, and no, they can't have my email address.

Big step backwards and a missed opportunity for me to introduce my young daughter to anatomy. :(

  27. it's worse that everything there is paid. What abuot this opensource stuff? and free for everyone???

  28. I am really pissed off about the zygote body..how long do we have to wait for launch?? I need this program because I have to study for my anatomy exam and it is better then any anatomy atlas..

  29. Its back up! We relaunched it Monday

    www.zygotebody.com

we have a list of tweaks and requests we will be working on so stay tuned and give us your feedback.

fyi- Zygote has been around for 20 years producing the best 3D anatomy in the world. The viewer uses our low end anatomy so as to work better in an online viewer.

    1. Wow...that *is* freaking awesome! I've been using Google/Zygote body for a few years now, but the one you linked is pretty cool. If Zygote don't pick up their gain I think I'll shift over to that one...I may do so in any event. Thanks for the link!
