Consistent Browsing Experience

So you work on more than one computer, you like your Firefox browser, but there's a problem: it doesn't have a memory across multiple computers. You visit a page on your home computer, but when you need to remember that page a day after, to fix your friend's computer there's no one to help you.

Fortunately, there's a simple idea that could solve problems like this one. Google Browser Sync is an extension developed by Google that saves all your settings to Google's servers in an encrypted format.

"Google Browser Sync for Firefox is an extension that continuously synchronizes your browser settings – including bookmarks, history, persistent cookies, and saved passwords – across your computers. It also allows you to restore open tabs and windows across different machines and browser sessions."

All you have to do is to buy an USB drive and copy Firefox Portable along with Google Browser Sync, and you have access to all the settings anywhere you go (if there's an Internet connection). Don't forget to install Google Browser Sync on your home computer too.

  1. This has been out for sometime now. I hope you are not just hearing about it.

  2. I hope I'm not just having a "Scatter Brain" moment here, but if you install the Firefox Portable prog on your USB drive, why do you need to also have Google Browser Sync installed? If you have bookmarks and everything setup on your Firefox Portable, then wouldn't that keep all the data saved on your USB drive regardless of what computer you plug it into???

  3. True, but you don't use your Firefox Portable at home, do you?

  4. This is a good extension in theory, but I find it does things I don't care about, and fails to do things I want.

I use del.icio.us rather than bookmarks, primarily so I don't need to worry about synchronising them. Also, I may as well contribute to the hive-mind when I can (Alex, I know you want bookmarks to be private, but I memorise any good p0rn sites I find, so I'm not too worried).

Other than bookmarks, all I want synched is extensions, and it doesn't do that. I can understand why, but it could at least alert me when I've installed one, and give me the option to install it on my other computers.
