The new interface is now available in Blogger in Draft, but it looks quite different. "Over the last couple of months, we've made significant improvements to our new user interface. First and foremost, we've incorporated your feedback and made numerous fixes based on that feedback. Also, we've updated the look and feel of our new design, inspired by Google's newest design evolutions," explains Google. Blogger uses Ajax, so all the pages load a lot faster, including the post editor. Unfortunately, Blogger is still very slow when you perform a search and try to display posts or comments.
Blogger's new UI is cleaner and it offers additional information about your posts: the number of pageviews. Tabs have been replaced by a vertical menu and the list of labels is now a drop-down. The post editor is much better, especially if you use the default view. Blogger's new editor takes up most of the page and post settings are now included in a sidebar.
There's a lot of white space in the new interface, buttons aren't big enough to be readable and Blogger includes too much information that's not very useful: the total number of published comments and the total number of pageviews. The new interface is a mixed bag: it's modern, clean, faster and more powerful, but there are many things that need to be changed before replacing the existing interface.
You can try the new UI at draft.blogger.com and you also have the option to make it the default interface.

ReplyDeleteThe interface is nice, sure, but there is little added value other than that: they removed some nice little details (like the extra url hidden in the posts' title) without really adding any new options (like the possibility to send a distinct summary to the feeds, like they do on the NYT).

ReplyDeleteClean but too sparse. Like the other new interfaces, there's far too much white space surrounding everything, needing more screen real estate to show a useful number of items.

Which makes me suspect that Blogger branding is going no where. Why include all that orange if it all going to disappear in 4 to 6 weeks time.
Yes it will get integrated into Google+ but just like hangouts and Huddle it will keep it own branding.

Looks nice ,But what happened to indic language support .I was able to write very easily in Malayalam when I used earlier version.

Wow! Orange-on-white, light-gray-on-white and a lot of white space. This is awful design. Looks like Microsoft's Metro.

Geolocation by name does not work. You have to scroll&zoom the map to get the desired location.
ReplyDeleteAnd the option to manually add a location name is laughable: Add a location name and still get 'location unknown' (New York is 'unknown', I might add)

It's a bit buggy, at least in Chrome dev. The post window is tiny (my wife describes a different experience in Chrome stable) and it takes 3-4 tries to get the scheduled date correct. And scheduling the time is homicidally bad as well. Apparently not run through any UI testing before being shoved out the door.
ReplyDeleteI really like the current name "blogger", renaming all the services including YouTube and Blogger would start to make it sound ambiguously plain. YouTube and Blogger, both names just has that bit of "Google's unique excitement" to it and that's why I think the name shouldn't change. I love the new UI though, the current one is "bloody" awful!

ReplyDeleteI've had a bad time with the scheduling UI, it seems to forget future scheduling when you go publish it into the future, go back in and edit it again, and so you can accidentally publish embargoed facts. Try and play with that calendar thingy and you'll see its weaknesses

-no way to set a default location, assumes west coast US and not the EU (again)
-not a great UI for some screen configurations
-not a great UI for slow network connects (e.g 3G)
This tells you a lot about the dev team. Based in the West Coast US, big monitors, fast network connections -and not scheduled postings. It works great if your setup matches this.

ReplyDeleteWhen creating a new post with images I have a hard time getting things to line up. Pictures sometimes overlap and I also have a difficult time place the curser in the right spot. Also, my images upload a different HTML then the old way. Not happy.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree and can't figure out why there aren't more complaints about images or tutorial sites to help people get used to the new UI. If you find any sites that teach how to gain more control over image placement, you would please share? (kellymasley@gmail.com)?

ReplyDeleteThe new interface really bites the big one. Mine freezes after about five keystrokes in any new post. Maybe it's the autosave feature but there doesn't seem to be any way to disable that. Oh how I wish we could go back to the old "unimproved" Blogger!!!
