A small guide for people that continue to ask how to use Google's low-profile bookmarking service.
What is Google Bookmarks?
Google Bookmarks is an online service that lets you save your favorite sites and attach labels and annotations. Unlike the bookmark feature from your browser, bookmarks are stored securely online, so they are accessible even if you're using other computers.
There are many sites that do that. What's so different about it?
The most important features that set Google Bookmark apart from other services is that all your bookmarks are private (nobody else can see them) and fully searchable. You are no longer restricted to the title of the page, the description and the URL - you can search the entire page. A similar service is the new version of Yahoo Bookmarks, currently in beta.
Can I import my bookmarks?
For Firefox and Internet Explorer, you can download Google Toolbar, and use the "Import bookmarks" option that appears on the drop-down menu next to the Bookmarks icon. For other browsers, you should import your bookmarks to Firefox and use Google Toolbar as explained before.
If you use other online bookmarking tools, you should find an option to export your bookmarks in their support center. For example, in del.icio.us go to Settings and select Export/backup to save your bookmarks in a HTML file that can be imported into your browser.
How can I export my bookmarks from Google?
Easy, just go to this page and you'll download a file called bookmarks.html, that can be imported in your browser. You can also export the bookmarks as a feed, but it won't be very useful unless you're a developer.
How can I add bookmarks?
If you've already installed Google Toolbar, you can use it to add or remove bookmarks. Just click on the blue star to add the current site as a bookmark. Click again on the star to choose one or more labels.
For Firefox, there is a very good extension called GMark that shows your bookmarks in the sidebar and another extension that mimics Google Toolbar and adds drag-and-drop.
But to add bookmarks there's a very simple bookmarklet that should work on almost any browser. Just drag this to the links toolbar: Google Bookmark. You'll also find it at the bottom of the Google Bookmarks homepage.
How can I search my bookmarks?
Googe Toolbar adds a new option for bookmarks in the list of search engines. If you type the first letters from the title of a bookmark, Google Toolbar gives you the option to load that site.
You can also use Gmarks that searches as you type or you can just go to the web interface at google.com/bookmarks. Search the same as you'd do at Google.com. To restrict your search to a label, add label:name to your query (note that labels are case sensitive).
Is there an option to see my bookmarks in iGoogle?
There's a gadget that lists all your bookmarks by label and lets you edit them. You can add it multiple times to see bookmarks from different categories.
Will these bookmarks affect Google's search results?
You'll see the labels selected for a bookmark next to its corresponding snippet in the search results. Bookmarks affect Google's search results only for you. Google improves the relevancy of the search results by tailoring to your interests, so the order of the search results could change in some cases. A bookmark in the search results:

Will I be able to access my bookmarks from any computer?
The bookmarks are stored on Google's servers, so you can just log in and have instant access to your bookmarks from your personalized homepage (if you added the gadget I mentioned before) or at google.com/bookmarks.
Is there a way to store the full content of my bookmarks on Google's servers?
No, but you can try Google Notebook, that lets you select the content of a page and save it as a note.
How can I bookmark my favorite posts from Google Reader?
Install Greasemonkey in Firefox, restart the browser and add this script. You'll see a new "Add bookmark" option below each post.
I want to delete all my bookmarks and start from the scratch.
There's an option to delete all the bookmarks in this page's left sidebar (search for "delete all"). To delete only the bookmarks that have a certain label, use Google Toolbar.
2009 and still no folders! I just imported all my IE favorites into Google bookmarks and it's a mess! I came here to get tips on how to organize them into folders but I guess it doesn't exist. And how do you move the pages from one label to the next? Modify label? Does that mean move to a different label? So disappointing and confusing!
ReplyDeleteI have to sign-in google bookmarks every time I open I.E. How can I bypass this step. It use to bypass the sign in.
ReplyDeleteWow. For over 2 years I'm been using Google Toolbar and dealing with the lack of sub-folders. The longer you use the service the worse the issue gets. At this point I (like so many others) have this unwieldy list of bookmarks that scrolls on and on. I understand the idea was to tag items into oblivion so I can find them later, but after multiple years of use.... bottom line is it doesn't work for me. It's obvious from all of the posts here as well as so many other sites that I'm not alone and probably not even in the minority on the issue.
ReplyDeleteBottom line I find it sad that after this long this still hasn't been addressed.
I HATE the fact that Goole now SCRAMBLES all my bookmarks!! ie, when I save a bookmark, it saves a link just fine... Unfortunately, the link it saves, IS FROM A DIFFERENT SITE that the page I'm on! and WON'T save the link from the page I'm on!! (Same on IE v7 AND v8, Google toolbar, XP and Vista. )
ReplyDeleteI give up... first they take Notebook away for NO explanation, and now, talk us into using Bookmarks, NoteBook, etc... I'm starting to think that, if I do happen to visit Oz, the wizard.... ISN'T REALLY THERE!!
This bookmarklet doesnt work on Opera. You should change all the double quotes to single ones like this:
ReplyDeletehttp://mmartynas.googlepages.com/gbookmark.html
I've been using "subfolders" for quite some time now. Perhaps it only works in the Firefox Gmarks plug-in, but here it is: Put a > symbol in your labels.
ReplyDeleteFor example. I add a label Space>ISS to a bookmark, and when I look in Gmarks, there is a folder called Space with a subfolder called ISS. My bookmark is in there. The beauty of labels instead of folders is I can have multiple labels. For example a Scientific American link might fit in a Magazine, Science, and News label, but I only need one bookmark to update.
XMarks for me.
ReplyDeleteI did a search and skimmed the responses here, but didn't see an answer to the question I have. Is there a way to enable scrolling via the wheel mouse when using Google Bookmarks in Internet Explorer? It works fine using Firefox, but I have never in IE. Is there a way to make this work, or is it a limitation with IE?
ReplyDeleteI am unable to import my bookmarks from Firefox 3.5 on OSX. When's the next update?
ReplyDeleteI've tried several times to add bookmarks to intranet URLs but it doesn't except them. why?
ReplyDelete@Servé:
ReplyDeleteIntranet URLs aren't validated in the web interface, but you can bookmark them using Google Toolbar.
From the majority, I want folders and subfolders. How hard can it be to add an option similar to what the Firefox plugin does? If I insert a '/' in between tags it would translate that as a nested folder. I am getting sick of Firefox due to it speed and want to switch back to IE. Delicious has a horrible interface in that it will sometimes lock up IE.
ReplyDeleteGoogle bookmarks can't even be searched from the browser drop-down button, e.g. it can't show all bookmarks labelled "Parts" AND "Electronic". List shows only one bookmark per label - that is quite primitive.
ReplyDeletehey fried pz tell me
ReplyDeleteHow can I share my google bookmark with friends?
it escapes me why their own browser Chrome is completely out-of-picture with regards to Google Bookmarks...
ReplyDeleteC'mon, they make a browser and then you cannot import its bookmarks into their own online Google Bookmarks service. You can export bookmarks from Chrome but there is no place in Google Bookmarks page (there is no toolbar for Chrome!) to import them... this sucks big time.
Without a doubt, you should have the option to manage your bookmarks through folders and subfolders if you wish.
ReplyDeleteI can't "manage" the bookmarks! Want to rename folders, drag contents to different folder - can't figure out HOW!
ReplyDeletePretendeo tornar meu Google Bookmarks uma página pública. Como faço para conseguir isto?
ReplyDeleteAs Guish mentioned you can add subfolders using the > syntax.
ReplyDeletei.e.
News
News > Local
News > International
This works with the GMarks addon and when adding/managing books via the website. I haven't tried it with the bookmarklet yet.
Why was the edit feature not available to change the URL address. I want to use Google bookmarks and I insist that Google avail this feature for us if they intend for more ppl to use this feature
ReplyDeletein IE8, when I try to import ie favorites, using the google toolbar, i get error: "IE has modified this page to prevent cross-site scripting" and the page stops loading
ReplyDeleteWell, I have to say in response to anonymous that I HATE labels only system. I actually use bookmark for work and labels are not enough. I have been using google bookmarks for too long, I am switching back to folder structured bookmarks.
ReplyDeletedefinitely enjoy the bookmark functionality, but am dissappointed by the inability to share bookmarks and integrate them in other Google systems such as blogger, etc.
ReplyDelete@Ionut Alex. Chitu:
ReplyDeleteAlex, we've gone through this before, but nothing is working. I've unsubscibed to this blog a dozen time (using the correct email address for the Google account I signed up for it with) and it still is not working. I keep getting every post in my inbox and I want off the blog.
I've sent numerous emails to Google (see the help forums) but no reply to any of them (not surprising). What do I have to do go unsubscribe to this?
I've just imported from firefox and am immediately reverting to firefox after discovering the lack of nested folders - Come on Google you're the experts at indexing huge amounts of data, your bookmarking system really needs nested folders.
ReplyDeleteWhy isn't this ported to Android?
ReplyDeleteI've been using Google bookmarks for years. I've got my Labels stored as Numbers... eg: 200 Family, 300 Gaming, 500 Computing, (etc) so then I can have 310 Playstation, 320 Current PC Games, 330 Retro PC Games.
ReplyDeleteEssentially, this works as sub-folders for me. Even better, the Google Bookmarks applet on my igoogle page allows me to select a label to display. It takes seconds.
I don't know what people are whining about.
What I would like though is some utility I can run on someone else's computer to migrate all their IE favorites to Google Bookmarks.
Oh... Already found it.

My wishlist for Google Bookmark whether on Google notebook or Google History is :
ReplyDeleteBetter Label Management System.
Just like GMail or even better. Thanks Google!
Lately, Google bookmarks has been mixing up my bookmarked URLs and the names they were originally associated with - so I click on a name and get the URL of another location that I had stored under a different name. It seems to be affecting my most recently added bookmarks. Could this be a problem stemming from having a lot of bookmarks and/or folders?
ReplyDeletehave your android prog. for me
ReplyDeleteI thought I wanted a faster browser. Reviews (which rated Fireox tops) said Chrome was fastest so I went there.
ReplyDeleteThe lack of Google Bookmarks in Google's Chrome flabergasted me. I can only thing it's a marketing ploy to make it easy to move to Chrome, but difficult to move out.
I realised that what I REALLY wanted was a BROWSER INDEPENDENT Bookmark Manager with SUB>FOLDERS. Gmarks isn't quite as independent as I'd like, but the moral is that Google has successfully made me move from IE and Chrome to Firefox>GMARKS.
Which you could collapse Web History so that you don't have to scroll down to see as many bookmark tags. I use bookmarks much more frequently than the items in Web History.
ReplyDeleteI've just noticed that many of my bookmarks are no longer pointing to the correct place. For example, I had one bookmark that pointed to a page of DOS commands and another bookmark that pointed to a news story. Now, the DOS commands bookmark points to the news story and the news story bookmark still points to the correct link. Has anyone else had this happen to them?
ReplyDeleteI have had tremendous difficulty with Google Bookmarks. Often a site is bookmarked under the wrong label and/or left unlabeled. I can get the right site name and the right label but with an incorrect site address assigned to it. What a mixup and hence unreliable. Are others having these problems. Any fixes??
ReplyDeleteEveryone please suggest adding the subcategories feature here :
ReplyDeletehttp://www.google.com/support/toolbar/bin/static.py?page=suggestions.cs&issue=107390&bucket=15644
i would like to keep the bookmarks up for a longer period (IE has a way of clicking on an icon and the bookmarks remain showing) how can I do that with Google bookmarks, thank you
ReplyDeleteThe Bookmarklet shown in this page under "How can I add Bookmarks" is broken. If I drag this button, I get an invalid script.
ReplyDeleteHi.. i am using google bookmarks...
ReplyDeletei am also saving some personal information under a LABEL named as personal.
I am opening this bookmarks site with someone's presence....
(means ... if i open my bookmarks in front of some others)... they are able to see my personal information... so..
please is there any security provisions are there fire hide some LABELS ...
or is there any other way...
please respond me..
thank you in advance...
I don't have any complaints and use Google as my primary bookmark organizer. But...can anyone tell me how to add a label so I can organize them better?!!
ReplyDeleteUpdate Google bookmarks please. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteI like google bookmarks very much. It work well with google toolbar and it custom button.
ReplyDeleteMy bookmarks do not work about 50% of the time. I will bookmark something, and then when I click on it later, it takes me to a totally different website. It usually is a website that I have also bookmarked, as if they just get mixed up for unknown reasons.
ReplyDeleteWow, I'm stunned that folks have been asking for the ability to share bookmarks for two years, and there's been no movement. Google Wave doesn't seem to be useful for it either. What up, Google? The bookmarks system is next to useless without the collaboration that is built into all the other apps like reader, maps, docs, etc..
ReplyDeleteI am deleting my Google Bookmarks and will make a point of not using Google for ANY bookmarks until they enable folders.
ReplyDeleteI can't understand why I can share something from Google Reader, but not Google Bookmark. It's seems so stupid. Now I have delicious to bookmark things I want to share with others, and Google Bookmark for research pages that are just for me. Sharing PLEASE!
ReplyDeletei needed nested bookmarks.. too many under one category to browse .. searching is too memory intensive...my memory that is!! :)
ReplyDeleteEarth to Google: We want folders!
ReplyDeleteHow about importing it from chrome!!
ReplyDeleteI prefer GBookmarks... it's much better than other services like mr. wong. Also the new system is much better.
ReplyDeleteJust wondering if there is a problem with the bookmarklet. I click it and the window that opens is now the bookmarks page (http://www.google.com/bookmarks/) instead of the javascript page (javascript:(function(){var%20a=window,b=document,c=encodeURIComponent...). Hope that this can be resolved. I really like the bookmarks feature.
ReplyDeleteThe bookmarklet seems to have stopped working right. It brings up the entire bookmark page in the little popup window, and not just the form anymore. Has anyone else had this issue? Do you know how to fix it? I've been using the bookmarklet on several computers, Mac and PC, and it now does the same thing, the same mistake, on all of them. I just downloaded Chrome, installed the bookmarklet, and it did the same thing...the entire bookmark page crammed into the little pop up
ReplyDeleteI began to use Google Bookmarks by placing its gadget on the Bookmarks Toolbar of my Firefox browser. It worked splendidly. When I clicked on it, a new small window opened with the URL already loaded in a form, and a neat button that I just had to click to make the bookmark and close the window, all in one step. A useful link was also accessible without effort so that I could “See all the bookmarks”.
ReplyDeleteNow everything has changed. The button to add the bookmark is no longer in sight because the form is no longer contained within the window. The window has no scroll bars, so I have to enlarge it by dragging its corner to reveal the button. When I click the button, it no longer closes the window, but it redirects me to the all-bookmarks page, that I have to close manually.
The link to see all the bookmarks doesn’t exist, so I have to click on an inconspicuous link titled “Unlabeled” that, instead of opening a new tab in my browser, brings the bookmarks page into the small window that I have to enlarge to see the bookmarks. If I click a bookmark, the page opens in this secondary window and not in the already opened Firefox instance.
How a multi-million-dollar company as Google manages to mangle such a useful gadget and no one of its thousands of employees sees that this is wrong and that it should be corrected a.s.a.p.?
HURREY ! Listen everybody !
ReplyDeleteGoogle did it : Bookmarks WITH subfolders !
Many many years since I was waiting for this, it's a good thing to be patient.
For this, you need to switch definitively to Google Chrome.
Then you will be able to "synchronize your bookmarks" (in the options)
This will create a miror hierarchy in google documents with a base folder named "Google Chrome".
Then, from every where, using Google Chrome, you will have your so loved bookmarks.
is there any option that we can put google bookmark button to our web pages?
ReplyDeleteThere is "folders", but they're called Labels.
ReplyDeleteSee http://www.google.com/support/bookmarks/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=171089
And, if you're using Google Toolbar, you click the blue star to add a bookmark, then click it again to add a Label.
Easy
Google is a search expert. However it seems searching is poorly implemented in searching bookmarks. To search for all bookmarks that you have tagged with the label "dog" use label:dog. You can use "label:dog AND label:cat" which is the same as "label:dog label:cat" but if you do "label:dog OR label:cat" you do not get the union of the sets.
ReplyDeleteI'm using bookmarks with the toolbar under Firefox 3.6 and it blows. I can't log in to my bookmarks from the toolbar, the dropdown menu just won't refresh. I have to go to my bookmark page, *then* refresh, before the button does anything at all. Obviously, this kind of defeats the purpose of have the bookmark button on the bar.
ReplyDeleteSeriously, what is the point?
Is sharing with friends also possible ?
ReplyDeleteHave you guys seen the new feature in Google Bookmarks... it's called Lists, and GUESS WHAT?! .... There's nested folders!!!! Only thing is that it's seperate from the main bookmarks page, so it doesn't link in with the Google Toolbar thing (yet!), but it looks like there is hope!
ReplyDeletehttps://www.google.com/bookmarks/l#!threadID=GMQLX334AZGw%2FBDQK0ggoQ4KG3gPIk
Its surprising Google has nested bookmarks structure for Chrome but not for Google Bookmarks. Are they trying to force people to use Chrome? If yes, then its sick.
ReplyDeleteGoogle, you have the rss export option, why the hell should I want to subscribe to my own bookmarks? Please make them shareable!!!
ReplyDeleteI wish google's labels were case INsensitive
ReplyDeleteI realize that their search over bookmarks is case INsensitive but these labels are treated like folders and what's under the label "finance" isn't
what's under "Finance"
Does google think anyone has something different in mind when they type voip vs Voip?
or recipes vs Recipes or ... ?
People are asking for folders as well as labels but the case sensitivity undermines that request
(unless I'm missing something big ;)
I like Google Bookmarks. I use it with the firefox addon, it works great.
ReplyDeleteI like to Google Bookmarks function but recently it keeps asking me to sign in to view them, even though I am already signed in. How can I fix this?
ReplyDeleteOSG.
I like using Google Chrome with all it's import.export favorites....
ReplyDeleteGoogle - you are a progressive company that has a reputation of pushing the technology envelope and being best in class. Why can you not solve the simple problem of allowing subfolders in your bookmark tool as your competitors have? This is a must as we move closer to the virtual OS.
ReplyDeleteDoes anyone know how to transfer bookmarks from one Google account to another?
ReplyDeleteHow can other People see my Bookmarks?
ReplyDeleteI'd like to share them with friends! :(
We need nested folders or nested labels. Please communicate with us and tell us why you have not included this feature since we've been asking in 2007.
ReplyDeletecan i show some bookmarks to public ?.. if yes, then how ?
ReplyDeleteI choose to make Google Chrome my default. In doing so, i duplicated IE "Favorites" over to Chrome "bookmarks". Luckily the transfer did not erase info on IE, but here's what it did on Chrome: *duplicated bookmarks, not once but twice * makes no differentiation of sorting folders and files --- all mixed up * not alphabetized (very difficult to find anything) * omitted many favorites, i.e., did not transfer. In other words Google Chrome, you screwed things up --- not completely, just about 80%. I searched for 2 hours in an attempt to get bookmarks straightened out --- never found the key --- and as far as i can find, you don't respond to these inquires, so why am i wasting my time again? You want to know? contact me.
ReplyDeleteGoogle bookmark is a life saver!
ReplyDeleteI quote this from somewhere else:
ReplyDeleteIf you're using Google Toolbar for Firefox, I'm able to add more labels to my Google Bookmarks by right-clicking the bookmark in the tree list > 'Edit,' and typing in a new label name. If you're experiencing trouble doing this, I suspect some connectivity issues between your Google Toolbar and the Bookmarks server. Try signing out and back in to your Toolbar by either clicking the Sign In button on Google Toolbar, or by using the link in the top right of this screen.
Hope this helps!
Bryan
Give us Tag Cloud please....
ReplyDeleteAnd API ffs....
my google bookmark is not working! what should I do?
ReplyDeleteI am trying to build a widget/page on my site that would display an RSS feed from my Google Bookmarks divided by labels/tags/lists and I would like images to be included in the feed.
ReplyDeleteHow do I customize the feed to display specific lists and how do I include images that are showing up on the Google Bookmarks page in the feed?
I don't know... There's better tools on the market...
ReplyDeleteSince delicious looks like its closing according to techcruch, I had to find another bookmarking service. I will miss delicious if it goes. I search it all the time with tags to find sites saved by other users. I also like its features.
ReplyDeleteI used a bookmarklet from lifeslip to import my tags from delicious into google bookmarks.
O great I will installed it on my homepage. Is it possible?
ReplyDeleteGoogle bookmark button so far so close
ReplyDeleteIt does work but you can't add it to toolbar like you can do to PC desktop. In middle of page bookmarks button can drag ot safari desktop. If you click on it on ipad it works and aware of page. But you can't drag it to safari or copy it.
Why can't google or apple enable this??All the pieces are there??
How does this not have simple RSS support yet? I want to create a public bookmark list and grab an RSS feed for it. Are we living in 1995?
ReplyDelete@jkannry - on the computer that syncs with your iPad, add the bookmark button to your toolbar. Then sync the browser's bookmarks to your iPad through iTunes. You will then be able to use it on the iPad.
ReplyDeleteI'm aware of iTunes solution. It doesn't solve the problem and depends on connectivity to iTunes desktop. Wifi iTunes only home networks. Yes I could use MobileMe, Internet explorer, and google import but that's way too muck work.
ReplyDeleteThere is a solution. Just found it. Will put in next post.
There is a solution to get google bookmarks on ipad safari. It is the same approach as what amazon is taking with their wish list toolbar. Create a bookmark and copy paste java script into ipad safari URLfield when edit bookmark.
ReplyDeleteThe specifics for google bookmarks on ipad safari can be found at
http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?p=12344814#post12344814
I just upgraded to version Version: 7.0.1710.2246/es (GGLL)
ReplyDeleteNotifier Version: 5.7.6406.1642 and kept the same problems in IE9 about Firefox, you can not resize the history list, you can not edit the bookmarks from the bar, is slower than Firefox, disappeared the option "Open in New Tab", among other things, I think if you can not do IE9 functional bar, just stop it and focus on Chrome and Firefox, no? so you can make significant and necessary improvements in time to cope with the functionality.
To backup my Google bookmarks, in case of servers down, i have used bookmark manager called Advanced URL Catalog.
ReplyDeleteI really love being able to store my bookmarks in the "cloud"...but please Google...update the software and bring it into the 21st century!
ReplyDeleteI agree with Childrens Playhouses... Google Bookmarks are in many respects inferior to Yahoo Bookmarks:
ReplyDelete- Google lacks Yahoo's hierarchical folders structure for bookmarks;
- There is no way to pick an existing label: label must be manually typed each time when adding a new bookmark;
- iGoogle's bookmarks gadget is so clumsy compared to Yahoo's Bookmarks widget.
Too bad Yahoo gets rid of web-page-controlled bookmarks and switches to exclusively Yahoo-toolbar-controlled bookmarks.
is there any way to export bookmarks from Firefox 8 to Google bookmarks???
ReplyDeletebecause GMarks and Google's Toolbar (for Firefox)is not compatible with Firefox 8..
Is there a feature that lets users share bookmarks? If not, any plans for Google to add such a feature? It would really helpful with project collaboration for those of us who are heavy Google users.
ReplyDeleteIs there a feature in Google bookmarks that allows for sharing? If so, where? I can't seem to find it. If not, are there any plans for Google to add this feature? For those of us who use Google for project collaboration, this would be a very useful tool! Thanks!
ReplyDeleteIs there any way to share all those links (wich have all the same label) with others? I need a link, because the link ex.:
ReplyDeletehttps://www.google.com/bookmarks/lookup?q=label:Anglia&hl=en
is not ok.
Its so stupid that you can export your bookmarks but you can't restore(import) them back again geezz for such a smart company they are way too stupid
ReplyDeleteMuchas Gracias. Yo estaba buscado esto por todos lados, porque se me habia borrado mi boton de Añadir Bookmark. No me gusta la nueva extensión de Google Crhome, porque no tiene añadir etiquetas. Muchas Gracias +1
ReplyDeleteUse Fess Google Bookmark Extension for firefox and see the difference.
