After replacing Picasa Web with Google+ Photos in the navigation bar and redirecting individual albums to the Google+ interface, now Google redirects picasaweb.google.com to the albums section of Google+ Photos. You can still go back to the old Picasa Web interface if you use this URL: https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/myphotos?noredirect=1. Google displays this URL in a message that says: "Click here to go back to Picasa Web Albums".
When you use that URL, Google also sets a cookie value that prevents the redirect to Google+ Photos even when you enter picasaweb.google.com in the address bar.
Google+ Photos has constantly improved last year, while Picasa Web Albums no longer added new features. It's obvious that Google+ Photos is an upgraded version of Picasa Web Albums, which will be discontinued in the future. There are still a lot of cool Picasa Web features that haven't been added to Google+ Photos (Creative Commons licensing, photo mapping, featured photos, search), so let's hope that Google won't retire Picasa Web Albums until Google+ Photos adds these features.

Why picasaweb?
ReplyDelete1) I can't upload photos in Original size to G+-Photos. (I have 100 GB paid storage)
2) I can't change the date of an album
Anything else you miss?
Description, faster UI, sorting of albums
ReplyDeleteWell on android I can't create an album on the g+ app unless I upload to Picasa. Cone on Google devs.

ReplyDeleteCollaborative album! Limited functions on Android app too
ReplyDeleteI want to love G+ Photos, but for such a simple looking UI, it is very unorganized. And it lacks tools to organize it well.
ReplyDeleteAnd what about Picasa for desktop?... It's getting crusty.
I've found all of Picasa Web's functionality exists in Google+ but they've done things differently.
ReplyDeleteYou can't change the details of an album (date, location, description) but you can create an event (even a past event) with that information and add the album to the event. Then others that were invited to the event can add photos too. It's pretty cool!!!
I love the automagical upload feature from my phone. My photos get shared so much faster now and I hardly use my digital camera any more.
There's still a bit of an issue managing everything via the G+ app but they may be me until I figure things out. I still go back to the web site though for now.
The only thing that really bothers me is sharing with people who aren't on Google+ and don't want or need to be (like my parents and other relatives who have just gotten comfortable with e-mail).
So where's search for an album then?
DeleteOn Picasa I can view a map of all the photos... can't seem to find that option in G+ photos.
ReplyDeleteMaybe I'm just missing it.
What I miss most on Google Photos is support for keywords
ReplyDeletethis is weird and I really hate this. there are so many memories with picasa web albums. I never want to see it gone. I still miss old google profiles; when there was nobody on there but I was there and then those "hidden in isolation" profiles get changed to what we now call Google+.
ReplyDeleteMore, I already lost Google Desktop, Google Pack etc.
Here are the main features of Picasa Web Albums that is absolutely essential for me and it's not available in Google Photos (or I have not found it despite looking everywhere):
ReplyDelete1. Create albums/folders with specific names and other properties.
2. Choose a cover photo.
3. Upload full size photos.
4. Link to individual photos.
I second your opinion.
DeleteThird, and would add:
Delete5. Order prints
6. Sorting by file name
Delete7. Editing file name
I fully agreed. Google+ is so very carried away with the sharing and its contrived approach to social that it misses all the core elements of Picasa that I loved most.
Deletehttps://picasaweb.google.com?noredirect=1 is just enough . No need for lh/myphotos .
ReplyDelete1. Choosing cover art is not issue...keep that photo first while organizing. That will become album art.
ReplyDeleteI couldn't figure out how to delete empty albums from G+photos.
ReplyDeleteThanks for this link back to the old system.
Honestly, while it's a small feature, what truly annoys me about G+ Photos is that the album display has images unnecessarily large, so I can only see a few on screen at a time. Then it takes forever to scroll through all of them if you have 100 or more albums. I just want good navigation.
ReplyDeleteI second.
DeleteI am not interested having Google making "artistic" presentation of my photos. I only want to be able to manipulate them as I want. Sorting them by file name is one of my important request.
Need to all Link/embed for individual photos before you make the switch. Google+ is NOT the only blog/comment board in the world, and not the only method of "sharing".
ReplyDeleteG+Photos is great for showing off photos, but definitely not for managing them.
ReplyDeleteI think there is an option now (not sure where or how at the moment) to upload photos at full size at G+.
ReplyDeleteBeen thinking of moving all my photos to Drive instead.
I still MUCH prefer the gallery view and pages for Picasa vs. G+ and always link people with a nonredirect=1 URL so I really hope they don't entirely discontinue it as there are still many features and options that Picasa has and G+ doesn't. Also Picasa loads way faster
ReplyDeletebye PicasaWeb. I use Dropbox now:
ReplyDelete- semi-private links (as long as user has URL, doesn't need to login)
- gallery view
- users can download entire directory in one zip file
- users can download original videos
They need to integrate with Google Analytics too.
ReplyDeleteThe sticking point for me is that Google+ Photos doesn't generate links for posting a photo elsewhere in a variety of sizes like Picasa does. I also hate that the landing page for Google+ Photos is an obnoxious ad for the mobile app/instant upload.
ReplyDeleteGoogle+ is sexier and mobile-friendlier, but not as well thought out as Picasa, especially in its use of image metadata such as tags, labels and geotags.
ReplyDeleteI have over 400 albums in Picasa, so I'm hoping that this is something they're still working on...
It's a shame Google releases a half-ready solution like this. It's clear that the functionality is split between Picasa and Google+ now and people are already screaming. Why oh why. Picasa was such a good service, and it could be excellent if they continued to invest in it. Guess this will mean an escape to Flickr for many users.
ReplyDeleteYou are right. I still have a Flickr account... I question myself on moving everything back to it... but it is a LOT of work... Why do they want another FB?
DeleteFlicker is where i'm going.I can't connect to Picasa with Comcast. Still need help with that "Server error".
DeleteIdiotic!!! I want to share a photo in a forum post from my Android, an I used to do it just by pasting direct link to a photo. Now I've spent an hour figuring out the ways to do it, and it seems there is none! C'mon people, are you from another planet???
ReplyDeleteFrom another planet no, maybe from another solar system.i have 4 websites whit grid theme and The photos dont appear.

DeleteWhat about RSS feeds of albums, and particularly non-public albums? Cannot find them on Google+ Photos!
ReplyDeleteWhat will happen to the Picasa-web suppport for Google accounts that don't use G+. Not all blogs are suitable for being hooked to individual Google accounts, some are far better suited to individual accounts.
ReplyDeleteThe system here is great to post pic's and create great albums. I am still working on learning how everything works but I am sure it will not take me too long.

So is this why we Android users can't upload our phone's photos to Picasa as we've always done? Consistently receiving the "Failed Service Error" after 100% upload! Wouldn't it have been nice for Google to inform us of this change, instead of just assuming people would know where to look for the information?
ReplyDeleteI still hate google+ I want Piscasa back!!!!!!!
DeleteGoogle does not care for android users ? Are we customers of a concurrent OS or what ? If this is a transition from service to service , then for sure "Failed Service Error" is not a kind way to say that to users. What that says to users is "Google is broken" ... and many many users will never know what happened, they will keep in mind "It just stopped working... before I had to switch to service XYZ (some other photosharing service). It is so amateur and MS type of pissing off users.
ReplyDeleteIs there anyone noticed their albums were disappeared from Picasa Web Album in last few days? My albums originally listed under unlisted gallery were missing. Google only moved two of them to Google+. Others are inaccessible.
ReplyDeleteWell, they broke picasa upload for older phones at the same time, which is lame. The real trouble is, and this is a serious nit, is that when I type in something in the google+ photo uploader, it just shows up on the post. But if someone comes to visit my albums, they see a photo and it has no caption! The caption should be filled in too, just like the picasa uploader.
ReplyDeleteThe main difference for me is that Picasa was one of the top preferred professional photographer's photo upload engine, together with Flickr, while google+ is just another social network for everyone to enter, and upload to have fun with your pictures, like facebook or instagram. The Picasa software even has features to deal with RAW image formats, that photographers like to work with.
ReplyDeleteFor people who like to post their professional work and payed for additional storage like I did, it was really unexpected and a real pain, and I'm already leaving Picasa for Flickr, deviantart or any other trusted professional network where I can make my work visible.
On my android I have the perfect tool for picasa app from the play store and I wanted to use that app for deleting albums in my gallery but when I tried, it gave me errors and I uninstalled the app and re install ed the app but it gave the the same thing over and over again. Why? Someone help me pls.
ReplyDeleteReading through this thread sounds just like the complaints over on Adobe Photoshop, which is switching to Revel without keeping hardly any of the useful and really necessary features of Photoshop.com. I got on here to see if Picasa would be a good choice for me if I decide to abandon Revel, but from these comments, it sounds like I'll just be going into a similar situation. Sad to see such good software abandoned for the latest "cloud" gadgets without understanding how customers are using these paid services in their work processes.
ReplyDeleteHow to add google+ album into "Google sites". I used to do that using RSS feed link from Picasaweb ?
ReplyDeletestill pssed..and it is 2016 now....arrgg
