There are many interesting questions in the Chrome help forum, but some of the requests are quite unusual. Here are some strange questions from users who can't distinguish a browser from a search engine or a mail client.
"I want the old Google search engine, not Google Chrome. How do I go back to regular old Google? I want to change my default search engine from Chrome to Google. The tools don't help me," asks Orville.
"If I change from Outlook Express to Chrome browser does my E Mail address have to be changed to a G Mail address?" wants to know Haljoan.
"I don't like the design of the Google Chrome.page. All of the toolbars I'm familiar with are missing, and I don't even know how i got it. If I uninstall it, will I be able to get just plain Google?" wonders Stellar.
"Should I remove my original Google now that I have installed Google Chrome?" That's a very difficult question and I don't think that Chrome's developers anticipated how difficult is to launch an alternative browser. Maybe Google should first explain users what's a browser.
"The biggest challenge all [browsers] face is that most people don't even know what a browser is or that there's choice," told Wired.com Brian Rakowski, director of product management at Google.

Has anyone really been far even as decided to use even go want to do look more like?
ReplyDeletethe world needs more intelligent people...
ReplyDeleteYou've got to be kidding me. I've been further even more decided to use even go need to do look more as anyone can. Can you really be far even as decided half as much to use go wish for that? My guess is that when one really been far even as decided once to use even go want, it is then that he has really been far even as decided to use even go want to do look more like. It's just common sense.
ReplyDeleteI decided to use even go want to do look more like before it was cool to use even go want to do look more like. I have even really been far even as decided to use even go want to do look more like, that I stopped doing look more like a long time ago, and now I just use even go want to do look more like with scissors, a box set of Kenan & Kel on DVD, a 4 gigabyte SD card, and a frayed ethernet cable.
That's a good point.
ReplyDeleteI'm working as customer service for one of isp in Malaysia. lots of customer confused, they this Google is internet, when they cant connect to internet, some will says they cant Google. actually they cant connect at all.. some also think Google is OS, when asking what OS cust use, some will says Google. LOL
ReplyDeleteWOW, just WOW. Seriously how could anyone be so dim-witted?!
ReplyDeleteWhen I read the questions and the response I wasn't remotely surprised. I have been providing desktop computer support for ten years. The majority of people I support all have PhDs in various medical related fields and the only time they are interested in technology is when there's some tsunami of popular demand about a particular thing (iPhone, Skype, etc.). Many of these folks are in their mid-20s and have grown up around computers using them every day, but they still do not know the difference between Microsoft Windows and Microsoft Office. When I ask what most of us here would considering simple questions like "What do you use to check your email?" it is a daunting question. There is simply is a blur of actions related to people's day-to-day use of computing that has nothing to do with how technically minded users see THEIR computes. Everyday users know in some weird way that is completely indefinable to them that the computer CAN be used for many things, but their ideas about how to achieve that are, for a lack of a better word, fantasies. I use that term liberally where I work, and I don't mean it derisively at all, but there is a lot of push back from my managers (who do not talk to customers) to not use that word. But the reality is that people DO have fantasies about WHAT they want their computer to do and HOW it does it for them is largely irrelevant. The majority of people I support, PhDs and MDs and all, largely operate on a series of steps to be performed to get to what they want to do. Not all, mind you. There are many tech savvy folks, but the big portion of folks are working and thinking about OTHER things besides their computers and their operating systems and their applications and their browsers. They really do not give a damn. They have work to do and they use computers to do their work. True, in a few years that will no longer suffice, but in a few years there will be generations coming up that have not known life without the internet, much less without computers. They will know searching the net the same way we knew picking up the phone to call people without talking to an operator first and will find it perplexing and quaint that their parents couldn't call up anything they wanted at anytime and listened to music from little plastic discs (as opposed to the big plastic discs their grandparents used). For now, though, despite the ubiquity of computers and internet access, computing is still largely thought of as a peripheral skill that you can easily survive without. You HIRE someone to know about computing and you ask them questions, just like you hire someone to know about telephones. And ask yourself just how much of your phone service you know where you work. Probably not a lot. You probably call, check voicemail, and maybe use conference calling every now and then. Even redial is little used, and what about call forwarding and parking on an extension? It's all great, useful stuff but hardly used at all. People stick with the basics and then call for help when they want to do more. That's all that's going on here as well. The confusion seems outlandish to anyone reading THIS blog, of course, but frankly the confusion is entirely understandable in the non-tech savvy world.
ReplyDeleteThese people wont ever know that they are famous on the interwebs
ReplyDeleteNo wonder, these are the people who click ads and make the web going. thanks to them.
ReplyDeletelolzzz!
ReplyDeleteHow did these people manage to install Google Chrome and why?
ReplyDeleteThat's nothing too new, though. I experienced a lot of folks telling me their operating system is "Word" and they write their documents with "windows xp".
ReplyDelete"How did these people manage to install Google Chrome and why?"
ReplyDeleteSimple. They saw a "Try chrome!" link on Google's home page and clicked it.
I love people, they taste like chicken.
ReplyDeleteThe real problem with computers is that they do what you tell time to do instead of what you want them to do.
ReplyDeleteThe REAL PROBLEM with computers is that they are designed and built by non-common-sense Gearheads who love math, complex problems, secret codes, and expensive little machines that go buzz, whirr, click and hum.
DeleteThey also love to double and triple duty any given button or device on their machines to perform extra tasks (a.k.a.Cute Tricks) when the user may not even WANT those extra functions (tricks). What the heck is wrong with having a camera that just takes good pictures?
Unfortunately, the fruits of these minor geniuses; the machines that hum and click, are not compatible with the daily duties, culture and lives of the other 95% of plain, common people who keep the world running - but who find that these machines have snuck into every nook and cranny of their lives, even into their washing machines, and toilets, through no choice of their own!
Add to that choice-less takeover, is the utter lack of good teachers or trainers to properly prepare and educate the 95% of plain end-users about the correct usage of these clever little machines. Even the highly profitable companies who make and foist the fancy little machines on the regular people refuse to provide adequate training or even courteous assistance by people speaking their native language...
UNLESS! the profitable company can squeeze some more money out of the person (who was forced to buy their product) to do them the 'favor' of explaining the hundreds of intricacies for the proper operation of their little machine....
So no, it is NOT the intelligence of people - It is the too rapid inundation (like smallpox) of jiggy, unstable, non-user friendly little machines over the entire earth's population by profit-driven manufacturers who have convinced themselves and their suckers (a.k.a customers) that said little machine is "Guaranteed to make their lives better and easier".
And I didn't even go into the issue of NON-COMPATABILITY between various fancy little machines and their various programs, apps and cords.... If the phenomenon of modern plumbing had been foisted upon society like computers...we would ALL still be using outhouses and a hand pump in the yard (and grateful for it).

@steeleweed: that's not the computer's fault
ReplyDeleteI agree with Sankeerth. The people who have Chrome "miraculously" installed on their computer are probably the ones who click the advertisement that says "your computer is infected with 62.9 million viruses...scan now."
ReplyDeleteI tell ya, I really hate the people that create these misleading ads, but I more-so cannot stand the people who fall for their tricks. It makes me wanna slap somebody in hopes of knocking lose the ignorance that has built up like plaque on their brain.
(run-on sentence coming...be prepared) I know I'm off-topic somewhat, but what I REALLY CANNOT STAND is when you've tried OVER and OVER again to explain to these idiots that they should avoid falling for such advertisements; and the next minute they're back to clicking, clicking, clicking as if life is full of nothing but truths. My God, that's like telling somebody to NOT stick their hand in a blender...but yet they do it anyway because somebody else told them Microsoft would pay them $20,000 to either do that or forward an email to all their friends.
You can't blame the users for this. Firms such as Microsoft and others have been trying to blend the OS and the browser and applications for years. The "average joe" user might...just might...understand the basics, but for every "average joe," there are lots of below average folks who just want their computer to work. I had a question from a user this morning whose default web search engine in IE had been changed from Yahoo! to Google, either by accident or by an IT contractor who was working on her computer. Afterward, it was changed back to Yahoo. When she started up her browser, she found that Google toolbar was warning her that her search engine had been changed. She considered that a Google pop-up ad, and couldn't figure out why her "Yahoo" had changed to "Google" and why she was getting pop-ups all of a sudden. For her, the browser and the "home" page and the default search engine are all blended together as one mish-mash.
ReplyDeleteFrankly, here we need computers that are as easy set back to factory standards as a router. I have to understand that these guys aren't here to work as computer people. They are hired to do their jobs, and hopefully the computer can help them in getting that job done. If they make silly mistakes like these, it's because those presenting the tools to them haven't made the distinctions clear, and possibly because they've been working to blur the distinction for years anyway.
Thank You,

Please see my lengthy rant above about What Is Wrong With Computers.
Plus there is one more thing that is horribly wrong with them: Spam, pop-up ads, outright CON ARTISTS, and degenerates who are up to absolutely no good.

I think Google shouldn't have called it Google Chrome. This suggests it is another Google.
ReplyDeleteGood comments, like from smallerdemon. I think it's good to bring this "issue" up, to wake us up: the world is not computers and internet. The tech world is just a small part of the "big picture" run by humans, who are small part of the whole world.
ReplyDeleteActually, people who put computers and internet in high priority in their lives, may have gone too far. Not all of us, but quite often we're lost. Computers and internet are just tools, but some of us keep forgetting it. Some of us don't want to think about it, because it's so easy to live in this world you know.
I can create software applications, I can set up an old camcoder as webcam, or write web pages with Notepad. But I don't know why it takes 5 minutes for my XP to shut down, or how to track the problem down. I will never know enough!
We don't usually blame a person for NOT driving a car or flying, not riding a horse or not building one's own house, or even a chair. NOT knowing computers and software is NOT something to LOL about.
Also I wish that the word "tech" would not be used in this context, because even the field of technology consists of several non-computerized ... umm, stuff. Like machinery and electronics.
I'll go now out to see how the trees are colourless, waiting for the spring to give them the green colour...
THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU for admitting to some [of the millions of] discrepancies and problems with PC's [actually the digital world] and the internet.

i think all of this computer sh** is ridicul... what ever i need done on my computer it does the opp.
ReplyDelete'google chrome' suggests nothing on its own, that is ridiculous.
ReplyDeleteEveryone knows what 'google' is unless you have seen bottom side of a rock for the last decade, and if you can't ascertain the rest, then I'd say the education system has failed you, and us.
I don't like google chrome and want to go back to the old google , please help .

ReplyDeleteI like Google Chrome, I will prefer it but after mozzila firefox.

ReplyDeleteMy friend tell me I need reformat to remove Chrome and get my old Explorer. I did this using a CD he gave me that i put in when the computer starts up but now I can't get Chrome or Explorer. Which button do I press?
ReplyDeletein order to keep my PC running I had to allow Microsoft to add some of their stuff...which I do not want or use. They deleted my Google Chrome and all of the files I had with GC. Is there any way to coexist with Microsoft? It is the running system of my Windows XP PC but I google everything. Even since Microsoft got their facelift they have been forcing that stuff down my throat. They have locked me out of my computer 3 times!
ReplyDeleteChrome is not a crime, my OS is not travelling on a boat to another country, my tech guy is helpful but has these weird eyes and a big big beard (and belly) and he says he is "root" and laughs crazily
ReplyDeleteAll i want is my computer to work but i keep getting these dialogs that ask me YES or NO but I know life is not that simple
I have IE, Chrome, Firefox and Safari, if one doesnt work i just use another.
A real nerd downstairs uses a funny thing called Lynx
If i get a virus I just scan and it goes. Hey I get sick sometimes why can't my PC?
PC, IT, IP, TCP UDP SMTP DNS ARP it all makes NO sense to me but at least I dont have to type hard like they used to on the Olivetti typewriter
someone pass me that pizza!
Oh very funny...Shutup and give me back my Olivetti.

ReplyDeletei like the new google chrome
ReplyDeleteIf 2+2=4 then google chrome is the best.
ReplyDeleteFor the people that commented how much smarter they are, I agree. Thankfully you exist or the computer world would not. You all are great and we are not.
