Google's personalized homepage finally added the option to share a tab. If you click on the arrow next to the title of the active tab, you'll see three options: rename, delete and share. Google doesn't provide you a direct link, but it asks you to enter the email addresses of the persons you want to share that tab with.
The email contains a link that includes the URLs of all the gadgets from that tab. If you click on that link, you'll get a page that lets you add all the gadgets or only some of them to a new tab in your iGoogle page. Here's, for example, the link to my iGoogle tab about Google.
Google could generate a similar link for all your feeds and gadgets that could be used to backup your iGoogle page. After all, it's just a list of links.

It seems like a good idea to me. This will make it easier for people like me,considering I send a lot of links and articles to friends and family.
ReplyDeleteI thought the exact same thing this morning when i saw "Share a link", my words were "oh hey, you could easily create a backup that way"
ReplyDeleteI like that they added the arrow there, i remember a few times where people were asking how to rename or delete tabs.
Who knows, maybe we'll be able to change the order of the tabs until the end of the year... And it would be nice to share a tab and keep all the settings. Or publish the tab as an independent page.
ReplyDeleteIt seems funny though but when Google is behind on something that has already been around for a long time and offered by multiple players, people DO NOT mind. The other day I was reading techcrunch story of AOL getting ready to release their own AJAX enable homepage (like iGoogle, netvibes, pageflakes), people were cursing them and wondering why AOL wants to follow others in each and every thing. I am not saying that Google follow others, always (they are way ahead in innovation than AOL) but people should take a break from bashing some old players in the game who have almost lost everything they had.
ReplyDeleteyeah, I love google but Netvibes had this feature I am guessing 6 months ago.
ReplyDeleteGreat blog. Yes, seems like a good idea to me....it would also be nice to share a tab and keep all the settings Tim
