If you ever find an interesting academic paper in Google's search results:
...and when you click on the result, the page says that you need a subscription:
... go back and click on "All n versions", below the search snippet, to find other versions of the paper from Google Scholar. If you're lucky, you'll find the paper in the HTML, PDF or PostScript format.
Tip: to find a link to the full version of an academic paper in Google Scholar, look for the green arrow.

This is a great feature, this should be included in all universities.
ReplyDeleteI think Google Scholar now shows in the main search results if there is any PDF version. I mean previously, it was like you said that we had to view 'All n versions' to see if any PDF version is there. However, currently, if there is any PDF version, then Google Scholar shows it besides the main result even on the main SERP. Search for this to confirm:

Btw, I think this is one of the best things Google has done for the academic community, especially for those living outside USA/UK where subscription to online scholarly journals isn't usually provided by universities (like many UK universities give Athens Access).
ReplyDeleteI have been more successful in finding full copies of papers by searching paper titles in regular Google search than in Scholar.
ReplyDeleteLet me mention in this context that you might find a Greasemonkey script that I just wrote useful :

It highlights (at least some of the) items that are free, including those mentioned here, by increasing the size of the font in which their titles are displaed.
I can't find another place to post it... but, I want my Google Home Page back... When I click on home, I DON'T WANT to go to G-mail.. Fix, this please!!
ReplyDelete@Carl Morris: That's strange. Have you used anything recently that could have caused this? Have you checked the URL of your bookmark? Google.com shouldn't redirect to Gmail, ever.
ReplyDelete@Mysterius:
ReplyDeleteThat's a known bug. When you open an iGoogle gadget in canvas view and reload iGoogle, it shows the last gadget opened in canvas view, in this case the Gmail gadget. The workaround is easy: there's a button at the top of the page that lets you close the canvas view.
pirates are lucky folks
