Hitwise reported that Google's market share in the US was 72.11% in February. "Yahoo Search, MSN Search and Ask.com received 17.04%, 5.56% and 3.74%, respectively, and are down year-over-year at -17%, -20%, and -10% respectively." comScore has different numbers and they show that Google's market share in the US is much lower: 63.3%.
A report from the AT Internet Institute shows that Google's market share in France was 91.23% for February 2009. The major search engines that trailed Google were Yahoo (2.43%) and Live Search (2.29%).
Most of the news articles that discuss Google's market share only include the US, but it's interesting to see how popular Google is around the world. That's why I created a Google Spreadsheet where you can enter Google's market share in your country. Make sure to provide a reliable source for your information and to include recent data. The spreadsheet can be edited by anyone and it's not necessary to log in using a Google account.

The most interesting about the Google's supremacy is that it's based on competition, not on monopoly.
ReplyDeleteFor correct russian market research look at here:

SpyLOG analytics is so bad.
For Ukraine:

Country market share is available as a paid service from several online providers. There is nothing for free so I also support this idea.
ReplyDelete@Alexey : be careful, it's not exactly market share of searches, it's "Search engines used by Internet users from the Ukraine to reach Ukrainian web sites".
ReplyDeleteIonut,
ReplyDeleteThanks to your blog Google's market share in Romania is 95% :-)
I quoted your article on my blog:
ReplyDeletehttp://getseoideas.com/2009/03/whats-the-use-of-google-in-romania-according-to-statcounter-95/
It's the very first statistics I see in Romania from a large source.
Thanks. :)
3% of Market share in S.Korea LOL
ReplyDeleteThis is an excellent compilation, thank you for putting it together!
ReplyDeleteLooks like people in china and their surrounding nations are not too fond of Google. Is it on purpose? Who knows. May be they are smarter than the rest of the nations.
ReplyDeleteChinese people don't use google because they have Baidu! Baidu is the google in China. Chinese and English are so different! Google may offer better English searches, but Baidu is definitely the winner in terms of Chinese searching.
ReplyDeleteWell I Google brings out the most relevant results for a query in every language I have used it in (over 10)...
ReplyDeleteI expect it to be 100% of all markets when the algorithm is perfected.
I share the same views. Liked your blog very much.
ReplyDeleteAussie update, I believe Big G is now about 92% of the Aussie market, I can't find the reference on it but I've heard the figure more than once!
ReplyDeleteAnyone got the source on it?
If you're looking for more information on the search market in China, and current changes, have a look at http://www.reformdigital.com/research/international-search-reviews
ReplyDeleteIt's the first of several issues to be launched, and this one looks at various factors in the market, key players, and a closer look at the battle between Baidu and Google, the former adopting over recent months to the way of the latter. Thanks.
Google is really the best search engine in the world.
ReplyDeleteanyone who thinks google is the best is simply ignorant. there is more to this world than roman alphabets. clearly, most english speakers seem to be unaware that there are other forms of writing. the reason why google is not popular in non roman countries is because google designs their search engine to conform to roman alphabets. asian, or arabic countries do not purposely boycott google. it is just an inferior search engine for their language, and there are loads of better choices, and that is why google loses. unfortunately, people like criminal background search are very narrow minded and have very finite knowledge.
ReplyDeletequestion. what is the market google is in? is it the internet market? how would you call this
ReplyDeleteWhy are these results different from the results from http://gs.statcounter.com/#search_engine-ww-monthly-200905-201006
ReplyDelete??
They look similar for the countries I browsed, but a good reason for some differences would be different sources, different dates, and different methods of determining market share.
ReplyDeleteFike2308, I couldn't say much about Arabic or Chinese but I'm from Russia which is one of those non-Roman alphabet countries. Google does very well with Cyrillics, its search performance is certainly better than Yandex's (Russia's top search engine) and the only reason it's less popular is that people hate all things Western and particularly American and feel very patriotic about having their own search engine.
ReplyDeleteAnonymous, do you have anything to prove your "certainty"? Or you only can trash-talk?
ReplyDeleteYeah.. Google is way above others in terms of what they offer. I have a huge network of people and by personal experience they are more likely to use Google than anything else to search what they want.
ReplyDeletewhenever i knew ,really i am very happy bcz 81.40% google market shared in India country.
