Enable Google Toolbar in Firefox 5

If you've installed Firefox 5 and noticed that Google Toolbar wasn't updated to support the new Firefox release, there's a simple way to enable the extension: install the Add-on Compatibility Reporter. "After installing the Add-on Compatibility Reporter, your incompatible extensions will become enabled for you to test whether they still work with the version of Firefox or Thunderbird that you're using." This should only be a temporary solution until Google Toolbar and other extensions update their compatibility list.



Google Toolbar 7 works well in Firefox 5, especially considering that the new Firefox version didn't make too many important extension-related changes.

Firefox's faster release cycle, inspired by Google Chrome, has an important downside: extension developers need to update their extensions more frequently and update the list of Firefox versions that are supported. Mozilla alleviated this problem by automatically marking almost 4,000 extensions as compatible with Firefox 5, but Google Toolbar is not hosted by Mozilla and it's downloaded from Google's servers.

    "Google Toolbar 7 works well in Firefox 5" Yes. It's just not 100%. The "new tab page" check box was gone from Google Toolbar Options, and is now a blank page.

    Add-on compatibility 0.85 enables google toolbar to the extent that the toolbar works (search box and customizable icons present and functional) but the new tab page is still out: only a blank page appears when you open a new tab.

    Is there anyway to get the "tab" page back? I loved that option and I'm very irritated with Firefox for not allowing me to revert back to the previous release so that I can still use my Google the way it was most efficient for me.

    Watch the error log to many failures to connect.
    Clear the log and check the cache is double is size. The speed is not the same??
    After 3 days is not the same.

    Google had plenty of notice and time to ensure that its toolbar was compatible with the release of Firefox version 5. And they must certainly be aware of the issues and problems and very unhappy and frustrated users by now (unless, of course, they are too busy gathering records in anticipation of subpoenas being generated by the FTC - but that's for another day). In any event, Google's much vaunted customer service is in the tank on this one!
    Does anyone out there in cyberspace have any idea when that toolbar might be making its appearance any time soon?

    My major concern is Roboform. I use it to store passwords etc... and I don't think that will work with the Firefox update. Anybody else use this?

    This isn't good method (Add-on Compatibility Reporter) because if you setup Google Toolbar after that, de Firefox 5 URL field doesn't work...

    In my opinion, we should always wait a couple of weeks or months before updating any software or browser just to give time to developers update their product and test it against the new updates.

    I always have such problems because i always try to be up to date lol

    Frankly, I'm not very happy with Mozilla, Google OR McAfee Siteadvisor. For companies that deal with communication... they all pretty much screwed the pooch on this one. And don't be in too big a hurry for all our add-ons to work. I've read that Firefox has versions 6,7,8 and 9 scheduled for release before the end of the summer. Nice...

    Firefox update is too frequent too fast. Managed to get back Google Toolbar with Compatibility Reporter extension but the New Tab feature is not working. Now resorting to an alternate extension called New Tab King. Not as polish as Google's but will have to do for now. Anyway New Tab King has lots of extras so might be worth it to give it a try for the time being.

    There is a comment that says it is for alpha or beta users only. Maybe that is why it doesn't work. I don't load anything beta anymore because whenever I did it screwed up what I was using and had to delete and reload which is a pain.

    My Internet high speed, Firefox, w/Google Toolbar and browser has been severely impacted by the www.google.com 443 Error. Websites don't open half the time, lots of pop-ups reminding of this error alert, nothing works. It is a nightmare!

    Please see error message below and advise if anyone has had this and what can be done to remedy it. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the toolbar to no avail. Thanks in advance!

    I noticed problems with the Google toolbar search with Firefox 4: I couldn't select suggested searches that came up after I typed the first few words/letters in the search box--instead it would search just what I typed and nothing more. I downloaded and installed Firefox 3.6.18, un-selected the Firefox auto-update option in options>advanced>updates, and now I'm happy.

    Until Firefox gets its act together and announces that it won't send out updates until its most popular add-ons have compatibility updates, I'm not updating Firefox. And until then, if another browser surpasses the features in 3.6.18, I'll jump ship and use that one.

    Stupid move, Mozilla.

    Don't blame Google because Mozilla made their browser incompatible with the add-ons that made us all switch from IE. If Microsoft or Apple updated their OS and made all of your programs obsolete, you wouldn't blame all the other software vendors, right? Lots of add-ons for Firefox 3.x.xx became incompatible when 4 was released, including two I depend on (Google Toolbar and Tiny Menu). Microsoft makes sure programs are back-compatible with their updates. Mozilla evidently doesn't.

    You can't compare a free browser and its add-on eco-system to an expensive, paid-for desktop OS. You buy an operating system for the sake of the software you can run on it. What use is an OS by itself - nothing. The opposite is true for a web browser - you download add-ons because they are available for the browser of your choice.

    You need to realise which is the dependent party. OSs live or die by their software support. They are platforms. Add-ons live or die by their browser support. They are extensions.

    Too many people are ragging on Mozilla for this. It is GOOGLE's fault. Should a developer tailor it's software for the sake of free individual third party add-ons - or should it be the other the other way around?

    (Here's a clue, the hint is the term 'add-on'...)

    Google is by FAR the larger company. How hard can it possibly be for them to fix their toolbar? It should take a matter of minutes, so why should Mozilla retard its product development cycle just because a third party can't get its act together?

    I bet that most indepenedent developers have updated their add-ons by now. Who could have thought (Mozilla included) that it would take Google so long?

    Google is not going to update Toolbar for FF5. They want you to go to Chrome, which by the way also does not have Toolbar. Competition is a beautiful thing until the user gets hosed.

    Who would switch from Firefox to Chrome because Google Toolbar doesn't work in Firefox 5? There's no toolbar for Chrome, so it's more likely that Google Toolbar fans will either go back to Firefox 4, install the compatibility add-on or switch to IE.

    ha ha ha i feel like i am a rat in a maze, so many controllers forcing me to follow their paths to the poison and not the food. Shall i install a nose ring and call myself a cow?

    i enjoy the Google toolbar and i use it daily. i hope Google will not force their users to use the chrome browser just because their toolbar doesn't work in FF5.7, like they made us give our cell phone numbers just to get an account with them.

    I've seen a great downfall in Google over the years, especially since they became involved with the USA government. Their search engine sucks big ones and really doesn't get to the real links when searching and will instead list sites or images irrelevant to the queried...but that's another issue..sorry

    I loaded the Compatibility reporter just so I could use the share button that Firefox is missing. That part now works but now I cannot print. Press File, then print and wait forever and nothing happens. Right clicking on screen brings up a "not available" print select button. Is there any other way that I can print part of a page. Help, Eric

    To the guy who says it doesn't work? Well, it's working for me. As far as the new tab feature goes, I've always used the "File" then "New Tab" feature on the FF bar. Still works too.

    To the gentleman who made the crack about not needed the toolbar, I understand completely, but some of us prefer everything in its place. I think my friends call it "anal."

    I'm only afraid to mention how I did it for fear FF or Google will screw it up!

    This info is invaluable. I cant stand Androyd and for the life of me, I cant get used to it, compared to the iPhone. In some ways, Google is worse than Apple. Except for Google Maps, I will not support Google in any way any more.

    I added the compatibility reporter and it is incompatible with firefox 6. My toolbar works but I cannot access my bookmarks because I cannot sign into google through the toolbar.

    If not for this blog, I wouldn't even know anybody had problems with Google's Toolbar on later versions of Firefox.

    I've used the Google Toolbar starting with Firefox 3 (skipped 3.6) and updated regularly right on through versions 4, 5, 6, and now 7.0.1 and Google went along for the ride each and every time without a hitch.

    Whatever you people are doing (or not doing), you're doing (or not doing) something wrong.

    Get a grip and/or get a life. Firefox and Google still rule. It's the whiners who are out of whack.

    This is how I made My Google toolbar to work, specially the bookmarks.
    It is now working perfectly like before and all the features are kept. Here is how I did it.

    First, check the current version of Google toolbar. Type about:addons at the Firefox address bar and hit enter. Select the Extensions tab from the left. Check the version number for Google Toolbar for Firefox. It should be Version 7.1.20110512W if you are using the latest version. If not, update it.
    Go to your Firefox Profiles at AppData >Roaming > Mozilla> Firefox > Profiles > Default Profile > Extensions and look for the directory where the Google Toolbar is installed. Mine is located at {3112ca9c-de6d-4884-a869-9855de68056c} directory.
    There should be a file called install.rdf in that folder. Open it in a text editor like Notepad or Notepad++ (free and open source).
    Now you need to change the maxversion to 5. Find this line
    1

    4.0.*

    around line number 17 and change it to
    1

    8.0.*

    Save the file and close the editor.
    Go inside the "lib" directory and you will see the toolbar.js file.
    Open up toolbar.js with a decent editor.

    Find:
    www.google.com/accounts

    and replace ALL with:
    accounts.google.com

    Restart FF 6.

    Login through the toolbar.

    Restart the Firefox and the Google Toolbar should be showing up with Firefox 5/Firefox 6.

    Earlier this afternoon I lost my tool bars on Firefox so I uninstalled and reinstalled Firefox then did it again going from 9.0 to 5.0 trying to find a way to get the tool bars back on the screen but no luck, and I can't figure out which programs are interfering or whether Firefox has a sudden glitch....Who has the answer?

    I know im sick and tired of these stupid updates! they never really do anything! I WAS able to bear the pain but seriously Mozilla?! Taking away my google toolbar?!!! thats the last straw!! I don't use Chrome much anymore but now I'm to use it full time! At least CHROME, doesn't ask for annoying updates constantly!! Whats the point of updating to a new version if I can't use my freaking toolbar!!! Google had better update fast. stupid firefox.

      It's Google's fault, not Mozilla's fault. Google decided to no longer update the toolbar and only focus on the toolbar for Internet Explorer.

    I've had a computer man come and stop adverts and pop ups and since then I'm not able to print off a hard copy for purchases from ebay as there's no print icon. It used to be Google but now it's firefox. Anybody any ideas as I can't get my man back. Gerald.

      I got this information from the www but I forgot the address.

      To use the google toolbar follow these following steps (for Windows XP):

      1. Install Firefox 3.0.15.
      2. Install google toolbar.
      3. Install the latest version Firfox.

      (If you used google toolbar before and disappeared after upgraded then skip the steps 1,2 and 3.)

      4. Open My Computer, Click on Tools from the menu bar select Folder Option.
      5. From the Folder Option click on View then check "Show hidden files and folders" then click Apply.
      6. Open C then open Documents and Setting,
      7. Open your username" username"
      8. Open Application Data folder
      9. Open the Mozilla folder
      10. Open Firefox folder
      11. Open Profiles folder
      12. Open the folder av0stntf.default
      13. Open Extensions folder
      14. Open the folder {3112ca9c- 056c}
      15. Open the "install.RDF" file with Notepad
      16. On the notepad find "2. 9.0.* (change the number as you like I changed 4 to 15 then save)
      17. open the folder "lib"
      18. Open the "toolbar JScript Script File" with notepad.
      19. On the notepad find www.google.com/accounts and change to "accounts.google.com" without the quotation mark and save.
      20. restart the Firefox.

      C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profile\Av0stntf.default\extensions\{3112......056c}\lib

      For the Windows 7 (already installed Google toolbar on the previous version or google toolbar disappear after upgrade to the latest version):

      1. Organize
      2. Folder and search options
      3. View
      4. Show hidden files, folders and drives
      5. Apply
      6. C:
      7. Users
      8. Username
      9. AppDatta
      10. Roaming
      11. Mozilla
      12. Firefox
      13. Profiles
      14. oos3gtud.default
      15. Extensions

      17. Install (open with notepad)

      I use win7. I was able to follow this post until line 14 00s3gtud.default.

      That line is not available. Instead I have 5d8mzg39.default which does not include the letters gt which I assume refers to google toolbar. By proceeding with 5d8mzg39.default I do get to line 18 with no problem except I can't find an entry for 9.0*.

      I changed a line reading em: 4.0 to 15.0 an saved it but #20 toolbar gives me a microsoft error based on the 5d8mzg39.default part of the entry. Changing it back to em: 4.0 produced the same result.


      ver. 12 firefox removed google and yahoo toolbars. Firefox won't allow me to install either one.

      Previous posters have said that firefox does not interfere with google and yahoo. They sneer at anyone claiming to have difficulty. All I know that it was an update that was forced on me by firefox and now google and yahoo toolbars don't work. Firefox wouldn't let me continue with ver. 3.6 which I wanted to continue doing because all my valuable add-ons continued to work.

    I installed the live pagerank plugin a little while ago and I've been keeping an eye on it... It seems to pull up the same kind of info as the live pagerank checkers and page rank predictors. Like you said basically, Expertu, doesn't do a whole lot of good, but I guess it's mildly useful... I'm going to try the one you speak of though, thanks!

    I changed my install.rdf file to "< em:maxVersion >*.*< /em:maxVersion >", that way it "should" be update proof and you won't need to update the max version.

    This is how I made My Google toolbar to work, specially the bookmarks.
    It is now working perfectly like before and all the features are kept. Here is how I did it.

    10 steps of how to use Google Toolbar on Firefox 15.0.1

    1. – Uninstall Firefox from your computer {**Optional (including personal data}

    2. – Install Firefox 4
    Download and install Firefox version 4 from FileHippo
    http://www.filehippo.com/download_firefox/9506/

    3. – Open Internet Explorer and save the Google Toolbar for Firefox from FileHippo
    http://www.filehippo.com/download_google_toolbar_firefox/
    Click on the “Download latest version” on the top right hand side. It should be on Download folder or just save it on your desktop.

    4. – Close Firefox and Internet Explorer

    5. – Go to firefox prolifes at (this is where this file is in my computer)
    C:\Users\Owner\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\0n9hnmgg.default\extensions\{3112ca9c-de6d-4884-a869-9855de68056c}
    Look for the directory where the Google Toolbar is installed. Mine is located at {3112ca9c-de6d-4884-a869-9855de68056c} directory.

    6. – There should be a file called install.rdf in that folder. Open it in a text editor like Notepad or Notepad++ (free and open source).
    Now you need to change the maxversion (around line 17)
    < em:maxVersion>4.0.*< /em:maxVersion>
    Change it to:
    < em:maxVersion>*.*< /em:maxVersion>
    Save the file and close the editor.

    7. – next Go inside the "lib" directory and you will see the toolbar.js file.
    Open up toolbar.js with a decent editor. (I opened it on Dreamweaver)
    Find:
    www.google.com/accounts
    and replace ALL with:
    accounts.google.com
    Restart the Firefox and the Google Toolbar should be showing up

    8. – Open Firefox, go to Help/About Firefox and check for updates. Repeat (step 8) until you update to Version 12.

    9. – Install Disable Add-on Compatibility Checks 1.3

    10. – On Firefox, go to Help/About Firefox and check for updates. Until you have the latest version. I am now Using Firefox - 15.0.1
