Coming Soon in Google Docs: Third Party Apps, Cloud Printing and Sync

Google Docs' source code includes a message that reveals some important upcoming features: "Coming soon: Third party applications, cloud printers, and sync devices".

Cloud printing is a project that will enable applications on any device to print documents. "This goal is accomplished through the use of a cloud print service. Apps no longer rely on the local operating system (and drivers) to print. Instead, apps (whether they be a native desktop/mobile app or a web app) use Google Cloud Print to submit and manage print jobs." Google says that printers "are treated in much the same way as documents are in Google Docs". Cloud Print will be implemented in Google Chrome and Google Chrome OS, so it will probably launched in the coming weeks.

If you can synchronize your calendar, your contacts or your mail, why not synchronize the documents stored in Google Docs? That's one of the most important missing features from Google Docs. Google already offers some APIs for uploading and downloading files, but they're limited to documents, spreadsheets and presentations if you don't use Google Apps Premier Edition.

Google Docs has applications for editing documents, spreadsheets, presentations and for viewing PDF files, but what about other file types? There's no photo editor, no video editor, no application for editing PDF files or for extracting files from archives. Third party applications could solve some of these issues and make Google Docs even more useful.

  1. You're asking too much with editing pdf, and your not seeing Google motives and vision behind their simplify rules and laws. Docs, are docs, is to replace the mess of other document formats, that's what Google is trying to do with all their services. To create order, no matter the format, we should be able to work with what we want in only one place; text in docs, videos in youtube, photos on picasa, and so on. PDF editor? not consistent at all.

If is word or note, is always going to be a Google Doc, even PDF is changed to doc but this feature doesn't work too well yet, anyway a PDF editor? No way, it's not persistent with Google rules. It doesn't fit.

  2. I have been looking for this for while. I am building a collaboration tool, with the party app capability, technically people can reference data/notification from other sites while working on google doc. I would love to get my hands on the api and try some prototyping.

I am working on a free collaboration serivce - www.thinkj.com

  3. @Brozufil It may not fit those rules but Google can be be very flexible with their rules when it helps them achieve further goals: by providing an online PDF editor, they could convince users who pretend that the lack of PDF editor prevent them to 'go Google' that everything is possible in Docs (even though I agree that PDF aren't better than shared read-only presentations, spreadsheets and documents). Then, Google would finally be able to push its own formats and editors, and to provide a true Web OS that has workaround solution for legacy programs like PDF editors.

  11. that's because Microsoft's technology is so much better. Even in the web apps, it's like comparing Notepad to Word. Plus the fidelity of MS Web Apps is identical to the rich client. Google has to nail this if they every want traction.
