Yahoo's Web Messenger

In March, Google introduced an online version of Google Talk that extends the limited features previously available in Gmail. Yahoo didn't want to give yet another competitive advantage to Google, so they integrated the IM into Yahoo Mail and now offer a standalone version of Yahoo Messenger for the web.

Like Google Talk gadget, it's built in Flash, each conversation opens in a new tab inside the same window, you can find a contact and see his status. Yahoo's web messenger saves all your conversations and makes the history searchable from the same interface. Google Talk saves your conversations from any client, but the history is only available in Gmail.

While Google Talk's gadget is compact and can live inside your personalized homepage, in a new window or in your browser's sidebar, the new Yahoo Messenger for the web adopts the Meebo style of occupying and entire page. If you don't trust third-party clients like Meebo and most of your friends use Yahoo Messenger or Windows Live Messenger, the new interface can be useful when the desktop client is not installed or is blocked.

  2. Yahoo Messenger seems nice. But i think it won't compete in the same results with Windows Live Messenger, for instance.

Windows Live Messenger (ex-MSN Messenger) is so integrated in the web culture, that the majority of its users doesn't even know that there are other software options with the same functions.

  3. Google Talk is better for web, it has so many options, can talk from Gmail, pops out as a separate browser, receive RSS notification and so many.

  4. Yahoo Messenger web version is very good solution, especially for offices that prohibit their staff to install messenger.

It's also more secure for people that use internet cafe, especially in developing countries.

Than, yup, Yahoo! user will prefer it rather than using Meebo. Certainly, yes...

  5. What a contrast between yahoo mail beta and web messenger beta. Mail Beta is loaded with text and banner adds and hardly provide the users, a good experience. Many of whom (including me) have completely switched to Gmail or gone back to the old version.
Messenger Beta could have been a lot worse, considering its reach far and wide. But thankfully, common sense prevailed and the interface looks so clean and non-annoying. Can somebody take this feedback and give it to the Yahoo Mail Team??

  6. Just now I realized, I have ad-block installed on my FF. There is still a banner add on the right hand side of the window.

  7. With being able to put the Google Talk gadget on any webpage, I wouldn't want my entire chat history potentially exposed. It's not secure, and with cross-site scripting, there goes all of my personal history. I think that's taking trust one step too far to give a company every single character you've typed to your friends, and display it anywhere on the web it wants.

  8. @Jyvyn:

How do you know it's not secure? Did you find a flaw?

  9. YMSGR is great as a desktop application. Don't know whether this will actually work with the heavy graphics and load on the browser of an average computer.

  18. I've tried using the new yahoo web messenger but I was disappointed because it does not save my IM exchanges with friends using windows live messenger. I hope the yahoo web messenger would provide IM history for all whether yahoo or windows live because every online conversation is important especially if it's about business. Please yahoo team....

  19. In addition, I hope also the yahoo team will allow users to open their yahoo mail and the yahoo web messenger at the same time without being logged out from either of the two services. I got logged out from the chat when I logged out from my yahoo mail and unfortunately was not able to save my online conversation with my friend who was using windows live. Darn, it was important conversation... I hope yahoo team can fix this fast, really fast.
